Upcycling turns surplus, discarded, or by-product material into something useful while retaining or increasing its value. A textile may become a new garment without being reduced to fibres; food ingredients that might otherwise be wasted may be made into a new product. Whether a project is environmentally beneficial depends on its materials, extra inputs, and end use—not just on calling it upcycling.
What does upcycling mean?
In everyday use, upcycling means making useful value from material that might otherwise be wasted. The material becomes a new product or use, rather than simply being discarded. Definitions vary by field: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for example, gives food-specific guidance that includes surplus food, by-products, and ingredients otherwise leaving the human food supply. It emphasizes verifiable sourcing and a positive environmental impact (EPA’s Upcycling Basics).

Using an object again with little change is reuse; changing it into a different useful product may be described as upcycling or repurposing.
How is upcycling different from reuse and recycling?

These categories can overlap in casual conversation, and terminology is not universal. In its account of textiles, the European Environment Agency (EEA) distinguishes fibre-level recycling from fabric-level remanufacturing, which is often called upcycling (EEA: Textiles and the environment).

What are examples of upcycling?
Food products
Food manufacturers may use parts such as stems, leaves, husks, peels, shells, and rinds, as well as surplus ingredients or by-products, in new foods. EPA lists fibre ingredients and supplements, protein powders, baked goods, tea, and snacks among common commercial upcycled food products. For these products, it recommends checking how ingredients are sourced and whether environmental claims are substantiated; company information and third-party upcycled labels can help (EPA’s Upcycling Basics).
Household and workshop projects
EPA’s Recycle City examples include turning an empty coffee can into a flower pot and using old wood for birdhouses, mailboxes, compost bins, garden borders, or other woodworking projects. Packaging, colored paper, and egg cartons can become craft materials (EPA’s The Savemor Family Home). A repair or sewing project can also extend a textile’s use; fabric-level remanufacturing is one way textiles are upcycled.

Not every container is safe to repurpose. EPA warns against reusing motor-oil cans and pesticide containers because harmful residues may remain. Follow the product label and local disposal instructions for containers that held hazardous or potentially hazardous substances (EPA’s The Savemor Family Home).
Textile remanufacturing
At fabric level, a textile can be remade into a new product without first being broken down into fibres. This is the distinction the EEA uses when describing textile remanufacturing as upcycling, in contrast to fibre-level recycling (EEA: Textiles and the environment).

Does upcycling help the environment?
It can help keep usable material in circulation and may reduce demand for virgin materials, but the label alone does not prove a net environmental benefit. Consider whether the project actually avoids buying new material, how much additional material or energy it requires, and whether the result is useful and lasts. EPA says reducing and reusing can avoid some demand for new extraction and product fabrication; the EEA describes potential reductions in virgin-material demand and textile waste from fabric-level reuse and fibre recycling. Neither source establishes that every individual upcycling project has a net lifecycle benefit (EPA: Reducing and Reusing Basics; EEA: Textiles and the environment).
EPA’s U.S. waste figures offer context, not a measure of upcycling. It estimates that 17 million tons of textiles were generated in the United States in 2018, or 5.8% of municipal solid waste; the estimate does not include significant quantities entering the reuse market. EPA reports that 2.5 million tons, or 14.7% of all U.S. textiles, were recycled that year. Clothing and footwear had an estimated 13% recycling rate, based on information from American Textile Recycling Service. These are 2018 figures, not current totals or estimates of how much material was upcycled (EPA: Textiles: Material-Specific Data).

Similarly, EPA estimated that 12.1 million tons of furniture and furnishings entered U.S. municipal solid waste in 2018; 80.1% went to landfill and 19.5% to combustion with energy recovery. EPA said it had no accessible measurable recovery data source for furniture other than mattresses. These figures describe a waste stream, not the amount that could be or was upcycled (EPA: Durable Goods: Product-Specific Data).

How to decide whether a project is useful upcycling
- Identify the material’s fate. Is it genuinely surplus or unwanted, or would it otherwise be reused?
- Describe the transformation. Does the original object remain largely intact, become a different product, or get broken down into raw or fibre material?
- Check the function. Will the result be useful, suitable for its new purpose, and likely to stay in use?
- Account for added inputs. Consider new materials, energy, processing, and whether the project avoids purchasing something new.
- Check safety. Avoid materials that may carry harmful residues, and follow labels and local disposal guidance.
- Assess claims carefully. For commercial upcycled foods, look for traceable ingredient sourcing and environmental claims supported by evidence.
