Diamonds sparkle when their cut sends light back toward the viewer in shifting bright and dark flashes. Cut, viewing conditions, and cleanliness all affect what you see; natural and laboratory-grown diamonds can both sparkle.

What makes a diamond sparkle?
Light entering a diamond can be reflected, refracted, and dispersed. The stone’s cut—the arrangement and proportions of its facets—shapes how that light appears to the eye. A well-cut diamond can return more light toward the viewer, while a poorly cut stone may look less lively. GIA explains how cut affects a diamond’s appearance.
Gemologists distinguish three related effects:
- Brilliance is the total light reflected from the diamond, perceived mainly as white light.
- Fire is the colored light produced when the diamond disperses white light into spectral colors.
- Scintillation is the changing pattern of light and dark areas and flashes as the diamond or viewer moves. This is the effect most closely associated with what people call sparkle.
The balance of these effects depends on the stone’s cut and on how it is viewed. A diamond’s sparkle is not a single fixed property that can be judged from a still photograph alone. PBS LearningMedia’s educational resource also frames sparkle as light interacting with the diamond.

Which diamond cut sparkles the most?
There is no established universal ranking that makes one shape look sparkliest in every viewing situation. Shape describes the outline—such as round or oval—while cut quality describes how well the facets and proportions work together. They are related but not interchangeable.
GIA’s cut-grading system discussed here applies to standard round brilliant diamonds in the D-to-Z color range, not identically to every fancy shape. For those round brilliants, the assessment considers seven components, including the diamond’s optical appearance and factors related to its design and craftsmanship. A cut grade is useful evidence, but it should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every viewer will prefer the same look. See GIA’s explanation of diamond cut.

How to compare diamond sparkle and quality
When comparing stones, look at their light performance as well as their grading documentation. The 4Cs—cut, color, clarity, and carat weight—describe different characteristics; carat is weight, not a direct measure of sparkle. For standard round brilliants within GIA’s grading scope, consider the cut grade alongside what you see in brightness, fire, and scintillation.

| Comparison point | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Light appearance | Compare brightness, colored flashes, and the pattern of flashes as the stones or viewing angle change. |
| Cut | Check the report’s cut grade where the grading system applies, and distinguish cut quality from shape. |
| Color, clarity, and carat weight | Use these as separate grading characteristics; none alone tells you how lively a diamond will look. |
| Origin and documentation | Confirm whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown from its grading documentation rather than appearance. |
| Condition | Compare stones when clean; oil or dirt can obscure visible light performance. |
GIA’s natural diamond grading report includes shape, proportions, finish, and treatments in addition to grading information. A report number can be checked with GIA Report Check. GIA uses distinct reporting for laboratory-grown diamonds, so check the documentation appropriate to the stone. GIA’s laboratory-grown diamond information describes how these stones compare with natural diamonds.

Can laboratory-grown diamonds sparkle?
Yes. GIA says laboratory-grown diamonds have nearly the same physical and optical properties as natural diamonds. Either type can be well cut or mediocrely cut, so origin alone does not determine sparkle. Since appearance does not establish origin, use the relevant grading report to confirm whether a diamond is laboratory-grown or natural. Read GIA’s explanation of laboratory-grown diamonds.

Dirt, skin oils, lotion, and similar residues can dull a diamond’s appearance by interfering with the light you see. Follow the care instructions from the jeweler or jewelry maker: cleaning methods that are appropriate for one piece may not suit another setting or mounted stone.
