What #FFFF00 means
A six-digit hexadecimal color is divided into three two-digit channels:
# FF FF 00
red green blue
FFequals 255, the maximum channel intensity.00equals 0, no channel intensity.
So #FFFF00 is maximum red, maximum green, and zero blue. CSS color values use this same two-digit-per-channel structure (MDN).

You can also write it using a named color or the rgb() function:
color: yellow;
color: rgb(255 255 0);
color: rgb(255, 255, 0);
Modern CSS supports space-separated RGB values; comma-separated syntax remains widely recognized. RGB channels may also be expressed as percentages. The optional alpha value controls transparency, not the base yellow:
rgb(255 255 0 / 100%) /* opaque yellow */
rgb(255 255 0 / 50%) /* 50% opacity */
rgb(255 255 0 / 0%) /* transparent */
At lower opacity, the visible result depends on the background behind the yellow (MDN’s rgb() reference).

Entering yellow in Photoshop or a color picker
- Open the foreground-color or background-color swatch, or open your application’s color picker.
- Find the separate R, G, and B fields.
- Enter 255 for red.
- Enter 255 for green.
- Enter 0 for blue.
- Confirm with OK or the equivalent button.
Adobe’s current Photoshop documentation describes RGB fields as accepting values from 0 through 255 (Adobe Photoshop Color Picker). The exact picker location and labels can vary by version, operating system, workspace, or application.
If your tool uses sliders, percentages, a hex field, HSL/HSV, or a color wheel instead, enter the equivalent value rather than assuming the controls use 0–255 numbers.

On an 8-bit controller, this is 255, 255, 0. That is the requested signal, but the physical light may not look identical to sRGB yellow on every product. LED emitters, firmware, brightness balancing, diffusion, calibration, and viewing conditions all affect the result.
Adjusting yellow shades
There is one conventional pure sRGB yellow, but “yellow” can describe many shades. The following are useful starting points, not universal definitions for names such as gold, mustard, or lemon.
| Appearance | RGB | Hex |
|---|---|---|
| Pure yellow | 255, 255, 0 |
#FFFF00 |
| Light yellow | 255, 255, 153 |
#FFFF99 |
| Pale yellow | 255, 255, 204 |
#FFFFCC |
| Creamy yellow | 255, 250, 205 |
#FFFACD |
| Warm golden yellow | 255, 204, 0 |
#FFCC00 |
| Dark mustard yellow | 204, 153, 0 |
#CC9900 |
| Orange-yellow | 255, 191, 0 |
#FFBF00 |
| Greenish yellow | 204, 255, 0 |
#CCFF00 |
As a practical guide:
- Lower red and green together to darken yellow.
- Add blue to make it paler or less saturated.
- Lower green relative to red to move toward orange.
- Lower red relative to green to move toward green.
- For a mathematical equivalent of pure yellow, common values are approximately HSL 60°, 100%, 50% or HSV/HSB 60°, 100%, 100%.
RGB yellow is not paint yellow
RGB is an additive light model. It is intended primarily for displays, digital graphics, cameras, and RGB lighting. Physical paint uses pigments, and printing commonly uses a subtractive CMYK workflow. As a result, 255,255,0 is not a universal recipe for mixing yellow paint or printer ink.

For a painting, choose a suitable yellow pigment—such as a lemon, primary, warm, or ochre yellow—then adjust it with other pigments according to the paint brand and medium. For printing, the appearance depends on the printer, paper, inks, ICC profile, and conversion settings. RGB values alone cannot specify the final printed color (MDN on color and luminance).
Why your yellow may look orange, green, dull, or brown
First check the numbers. 255,0,0 is red, 0,255,0 is green, and 255,255,255 is white. Accidental blue, or unequal red and green values, will also change the result.
If the picker still shows 255,255,0 but the swatch looks wrong, investigate:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- The document’s color profile or conversion between sRGB, Display-P3, Adobe RGB, CMYK, or another space.
- A warm, cool, night, reading, or eye-comfort display mode.
- An unusual monitor preset, poor calibration, or hardware with limited gamut.
- Different brightness and ambient-light conditions.
- A named, branded, or design-system yellow that is intentionally different from pure sRGB yellow.
The key distinction is whether the stored color value is wrong or only its appearance. If the file or webpage contains the wrong values, correct the color definition. If the values are correct but the display is not, changing the RGB numbers may hide rather than solve the color-management problem. RGB values are meaningful within a defined color space; other RGB spaces can have different gamuts (MDN RGB glossary and MDN color-space glossary).
Yellow and readability
Pure yellow is extremely bright and can be difficult to read as small text, particularly on a white background. Do not assume that black text automatically passes accessibility requirements: check the actual foreground and background combination with a contrast tool.
For text, buttons, or important controls, a darker mustard, ochre, or gold may provide a more practical starting point. Also avoid using color alone to communicate essential information.
