What Sherwin-Williams Earnings Reports Can Mean for Paint Prices and Availability

Sherwin-Williams' 2025 results point to firm paint pricing and generally supported supply, while 2026 tariff and demand risks could bring selective increases or local shortages.

Sherwin-Williams earnings reports can indicate whether paint prices are under pressure and whether the company has the supply-chain capacity to keep products moving, but they are not a retail price list or a store-inventory forecast. The 2025 results show sales growth, favorable selling prices and steadier raw-material costs supporting margins even as demand stayed uneven. For 2026, management expects soft demand to continue and warns that tariffs could raise raw-material expenses. The practical takeaway is that prices are likely to remain firm, with selective increases possible when costs rise or the company retains pricing power. Availability should be broadly supported by Sherwin-Williams’ distribution network, yet local shortages remain possible because of supplier, transport, weather, geopolitical and facility risks.

What can an earnings report actually tell you about paint prices?

An earnings report is most useful as a directional signal. It helps separate changes caused by selling prices from changes caused by the number of gallons sold, then shows whether material costs are allowing the company to preserve its margin. It cannot tell you the exact price of a gallon at a particular store.

Separate selling price from volume

A sales increase can happen because prices went up, because customers bought more paint, or because both occurred. In the fourth quarter of 2024, Sherwin-Williams said Paint Stores Group sales were lifted by selling-price increases affecting sales by a low-single-digit percentage, together with low-single-digit volume growth. That is evidence of a pricing action, not proof that every product, color, region or customer received the same increase.

The 2025 annual results make the distinction clearer. Paint Stores Group gross profit rose primarily because of favorable selling prices and moderating raw-material costs, partly offset by lower sales volume. A company can therefore report better profit while physical demand is weak: price and cost control can outweigh fewer gallons sold.

Use gross margin as a price-cost clue

Consolidated gross margin increased from 48.5% in 2024 to 48.8% in 2025. Sherwin-Williams attributed the improvement to favorable Paint Stores Group selling prices, moderating raw-material costs and product mix. A higher margin indicates that pricing and efficiencies are currently covering costs; it does not mean shelf prices will fall. Companies generally keep prices stable when margins recover unless competition or demand forces a reduction.

Watch the materials that go into paint

Resins, solvents, pigments and additives are major manufacturing inputs. Sherwin-Williams reported that resin and solvent prices decreased in 2023 and 2024 and remained flat in 2025. That history helped margins, but it is not a promise for the next quarter. The company says future raw-material and energy costs remain volatile and can be affected by supplier constraints, transport problems, geopolitical events and tariffs.

For 2026, management expects raw-material costs and employee-related expenses together to contribute to a low-single-digit percentage increase, partly offset by supply-chain simplification and productivity savings. If those savings do not fully absorb higher inputs, additional price increases become more likely.

What do Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 numbers show?

The 2025 results describe a growing business with uneven demand rather than a broad-based surge in paint consumption. These figures are consolidated or segment measures, so they should not be read as a national price index.

Measure Reported result How to interpret it
Consolidated net sales, 2025 $23.574 billion Up 2.1% year over year; reflects all company businesses and both price and volume effects.
Consolidated net sales, 2024 $23.10 billion Useful baseline for the 2025 comparison.
Paint Stores Group same-store sales, 2025 Up 1.7% Growth at existing stores, not a direct measure of gallon volume or retail price.
Consolidated gross margin 48.8% in 2025 versus 48.5% in 2024 Shows improved price-cost and mix performance, not cheaper paint.
Key demand pattern Protective and marine, residential repaint and commercial led Paint Stores Group growth; core North America DIY remained soft. Contractor and industrial strength can coexist with weak homeowner demand.

Performance Coatings sales were flat: growth in Packaging and new accounts offset softness in core markets. That mix matters when interpreting headlines. A strong industrial customer base does not automatically mean that do-it-yourself paint will be more expensive or harder to find.

Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer Heidi G. Petz described the quarter as strong despite “continued demand choppiness,” while noting the first full quarter of the Suvinil acquisition. The statement supports a mixed-demand reading rather than a simple boom narrative.

Are Sherwin-Williams paint prices likely to rise in 2026?

Prices are more likely to be sticky than to drop broadly. The 2026 guidance calls for low-to-mid-single-digit sales growth while management expects a “softer-for-longer demand environment.” With demand restrained, the company may use targeted increases instead of a single nationwide move, especially where input costs or product mix require it.

Scenario What could happen to prices What could happen to supply
Base case: soft demand continues Prices remain firm; changes vary by product, channel and geography as disciplined pricing and productivity support margins. Normal production and distribution should support routine orders, although a specific color or size can still be unavailable locally.
Input-cost pressure: tariffs, energy or materials rise The company may seek additional increases to recover costs. Effects may appear first in material-intensive or imported components. Longer lead times or localized shortages become more plausible if suppliers or transport are disrupted.
Demand recovery: housing, repaint or industrial work strengthens Higher volume can support revenue without immediate increases, but popular products may be repriced if capacity tightens. Fast-moving items could sell out temporarily before manufacturing and distribution catch up.

The scenario table is an interpretation of the company’s price, volume, cost and capacity disclosures; it is not a published price forecast. A low-to-mid-single-digit sales-growth target does not mean retail paint will rise by that percentage.

Will paint be in stock at my local store?

Sherwin-Williams has substantial distribution capacity, but earnings reports cannot guarantee local inventory. The 2025 annual report describes a global supply chain covering procurement, manufacturing and distribution, and lists 4,853 company-owned Paint Stores Group stores. The 2024 annual report listed 4,773 company-owned stores at year-end. Management plans 80 to 100 new stores in the United States and Canada during 2026.

Those outlets are exclusive locations for Sherwin-Williams-branded paint in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean, according to the 2024 company description. More stores can improve access and shorten travel for customers, but store count is not the same as an in-stock guarantee. A location may have the base but need to tint a color, or it may need to transfer a particular sheen, container size or product line from another facility.

Why availability can change despite strong sales

  • Supplier capacity: A resin, pigment or packaging supplier may be unable to provide the required quantity.
  • Transportation: Fuel costs, carrier capacity, port delays or regional storms can interrupt deliveries.
  • Tariffs and geopolitics: Trade-policy changes can alter sourcing costs or restrict components.
  • Facility disruption: Damage to a manufacturing or distribution site can prevent the company from meeting demand.
  • Weather: Severe conditions can delay deliveries or create sudden regional demand for exterior coatings.

Sherwin-Williams explicitly warns that a major disruption to manufacturing or distribution facilities could leave it unable to provide products needed to meet customer demand. A favorable earnings release therefore supports system-wide resilience, not a promise that every local shelf is full.

How should you read the next Sherwin-Williams earnings release?

Use the same sequence each quarter so a single sales headline does not become a misleading paint-price prediction.

  1. Find the selling-price and volume commentary. Look for whether sales changed because of price, gallons, mix or acquisitions. A low-single-digit price contribution means the average reported sales effect, not an identical increase on every SKU.
  2. Check gross margin and the explanation. Determine whether margin moved because of selling prices, raw-material costs, productivity, freight, mix or one-time items. Margin expansion can coexist with stable or higher shelf prices.
  3. Read the raw-material and tariff language. Note whether resins, solvents, energy and packaging are falling, flat or rising, and whether management expects tariffs to change the outlook.
  4. Break demand into end markets. Separate residential repaint, new construction, commercial, protective and marine, DIY and industrial coatings. Growth in one channel does not establish demand in another.
  5. Review supply-chain and capacity disclosures. Look for factory expansions, store openings, supplier constraints, transportation issues and disruption warnings. These are the clues most relevant to availability.
  6. Read guidance by horizon and geography. A 2026 company-wide sales target covers multiple businesses and regions; it is not a forecast for a particular country’s retail aisle.

What does the outlook mean for homeowners and contractors?

Homeowners should treat earnings news as a reason to plan, not as a signal to panic-buy. If a project has a fixed start date, confirm the exact product, sheen, color formula and container size with the local store before scheduling labor. Ask whether the store has the finished color or only the tintable base, and whether another nearby company-owned location can fill the order.

Contractors with recurring work should request a dated quote and ask how long the price is valid. A quote protects the agreed job economics only for the period and conditions stated by the seller; it does not convert an earnings forecast into a guaranteed future price. For large projects, ordering in coordinated batches can reduce the risk that a later shipment arrives from a different production lot or with a different tint base.

For either group, compare the total project cost rather than only the gallon price. Labor, primer, sundries, delivery and the cost of delaying a job can exceed a modest price movement. Buying more material than the project requires also creates waste if the color or formulation changes.

Should you buy paint before prices rise?

Buy ahead when the product is specified, the project is scheduled and the material can be stored safely. Do not stockpile solely because quarterly sales increased; the reports do not establish a universal increase or a shortage date.

  • Buy now: The job starts soon, the color and sheen are finalized, and the store confirms the required quantity.
  • Wait and verify: The project is months away, specifications may change, or storage conditions are unsuitable.
  • Split the order: For a long project, secure the hard-to-source items first and confirm that later batches can be matched.

Keep receipts, product names, bases and batch information. Those details make it easier for a store to reproduce a color or resolve a warranty question if an item must be replaced.

What earnings reports cannot tell you

Reports do not provide a SKU-level price list, a store-by-store inventory schedule, a guaranteed date for a price change or a prediction for one neighborhood. Consolidated figures combine several businesses, geographies and customer types. Same-store sales combine price, volume and mix, while gross margin includes manufacturing and product-mix effects beyond the shelf price a homeowner sees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a current purchasing decision, the reliable sequence is to use the earnings report for direction, then verify the exact item and timing with a local store or authorized sales channel. That is the only way to establish today’s price and availability for your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Sherwin-Williams earnings reports list the price of a gallon of paint?

No. The reports present consolidated and segment-level sales, margins and growth drivers rather than SKU, sheen, color or store-level prices. A reported low-single-digit selling-price effect is an average financial impact, not a quoted gallon price.

How can I check whether a specific color is available before visiting a store?

Call the store with the exact product line, tint base, sheen, container size and color formula. Ask whether the item is ready for pickup, must be tinted, or can be transferred from another company-owned location; availability can differ even between nearby stores.

Can a contractor protect a project from a future paint increase?

Ask for a written quote that states the products, quantities, delivery terms and expiration date, then confirm whether the seller will honor it for the full ordering window. A quote is a commercial agreement with stated terms, not a guarantee derived from the company’s earnings guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does opening 80 to 100 new stores guarantee better availability in my area?

No. The 2026 plan covers the United States and Canada in aggregate and does not identify every location or product assortment. New stores may improve access over time, while supplier, weather or transportation disruptions can still affect a particular market.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
