Sherwin-Williams paint labels are easiest to understand in layers: first identify the product family, then whether it is for interior or exterior use, then the sheen, color name and SW color number, and finally the formulation or series code. The family name—such as Emerald, Duration Home, SuperPaint or Cashmere—signals the coating’s intended use and performance priorities. The alphanumeric code identifies a specific formulation, but Sherwin-Williams does not publish a complete consumer decoder for every character. For an exact specification, use the complete printed product name and the current product data sheet.

How do I read a Sherwin-Williams paint label?

Read the can from broad category to precise identification. Each field answers a different question: what coating is this, where can it be used, how reflective will it look, what color is it, and which exact formula is in the container?

1. Find the product family

The prominent family name—Emerald, Duration Home, SuperPaint, Cashmere or another line—is the main performance and application grouping. It is more useful than the color name for predicting durability, hide, cleanability and application characteristics.

2. Confirm interior or exterior use

Interior and exterior coatings are not interchangeable simply because they share a color or sheen. Exterior suggestions include Emerald, Duration, Resilience, SuperPaint, A-100 and WoodScapes. Interior suggestions include Emerald, Duration Home, Cashmere, SuperPaint and ProClassic. Always match the can’s designation to the surface and exposure conditions.

Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

3. Identify the sheen

Look for terms such as flat, matte, eggshell, satin, low lustre, pearl, semi-gloss, gloss or high gloss. These describe reflectance, not color or durability by themselves. Sherwin-Williams measures gloss at a 60-degree angle and sheen at an 85-degree angle.

4. Read the color name and SW number

The color name and its SW color number together identify the color. A color code does not tell you whether the paint is washable, suitable for a bathroom or part of the Emerald line. Those decisions come from the product family, use designation and technical information.

5. Note the product or series code and base

The final alphanumeric code and base information distinguish a particular coating formulation, tint base or series. Record the entire product name, sheen, color number and code when reordering; a partial code can point to the wrong product even when the color name looks familiar.

What does the SW paint code on the can mean?

The code is a product-identity reference, not a publicly documented character-by-character sentence. Official technical catalogs pair product names with series codes—for example, entries include codes such as A86W01151 and K35W00451—but the consumer material available for this topic does not explain what every letter or digit independently means.

That limitation matters when you are ordering paint for a project, matching an old can or writing a specification. Do not infer that one letter means “interior,” that a number means a sheen, or that a color number encodes performance. Instead, copy the complete product name exactly as printed and verify it against the current product data sheet or the retailer’s product record.

The code can also appear alongside a tint base. The base is the untinted or partially tinted formula used to make a color; it is not a substitute for the final color number. Two cans with the same family and sheen can require different bases because their colors need different amounts of tint.

What is the difference between Emerald, Duration Home, SuperPaint and Cashmere?

These names are not interchangeable grades of one universal formula. Sherwin-Williams positions each line around a different mix of appearance, application feel, hide, durability, washability or specialized technology.

Product line What the product information emphasizes Practical choice
Emerald Premium positioning, exceptional hide, durability, washability and stain resistance; interior and exterior offerings. Choose when finish quality, hiding power and durable cleanability are high priorities.
Duration Home Durable interior coating with stain-repelling technology, color-rub-off resistance, wipe-clean behavior and moisture resistance. Consider it for busy interior rooms where walls will be touched, marked or cleaned often.
SuperPaint A broad interior line; a specialized interior version is described with air-purifying and odor-reduction technology. Check the exact SuperPaint variant instead of treating every SuperPaint can as the same formula.
Cashmere Smooth application, an elegant or soft appearance and scrubbability; interior options include flat, pearl, low lustre and medium lustre. Favor it when application feel and a softer interior look matter as much as routine cleanability.

Sherwin-Williams’s principal interior comparison also lists Harmony and ProMar 200 Zero VOC alongside Emerald, Duration Home, SuperPaint and Cashmere. That comparison considers final appearance, washability, hide, moisture resistance and ease of application, so the family name should be evaluated with the specific variant and sheen rather than in isolation.

The Emerald product page currently carries an undated note stating a minimum of 22% plant-based carbon content. Because the page does not give a publication year, treat that figure as current product-page copy retrieved in 2026, not as a permanently dated specification; verify the can and latest technical sheet for a project requirement.

Should I buy Emerald instead of SuperPaint?

There is no universal winner. Emerald is the more appropriate starting point when maximum hide, stain resistance, washability and a premium finish are the main objectives. SuperPaint can be the better fit when you need a broadly available interior line or are specifically considering a version with air-purifying or odor-reduction claims.

Compare the exact cans on four questions: interior or exterior designation, stated technology, required sheen and the surface’s cleaning and moisture demands. A premium family does not make an exterior formula suitable for an interior job, and a specialized version should not be assumed to have the same properties as another product carrying the same family name.

Which Sherwin-Williams line is for interior or exterior work?

Start with exposure, not brand hierarchy. Exterior coatings must tolerate weather, ultraviolet light and changing moisture; interior coatings are formulated for indoor wear, appearance and cleaning. The following groupings are the product suggestions identified in Sherwin-Williams guidance:

  • Exterior suggestions: Emerald, Duration, Resilience, SuperPaint, A-100 and WoodScapes.
  • Interior suggestions: Emerald, Duration Home, Cashmere, SuperPaint and ProClassic.

Names that look similar can still represent different products. “Duration” for exterior work and “Duration Home” for interior work should not be treated as the same coating. Check the word “Interior” or “Exterior” on the label and confirm the substrate—drywall, wood, masonry, metal or another surface—against the product data sheet.

Which sheen should I use in each room?

Choose sheen by balancing reflection, surface flaws, traffic and cleaning. Lower-reflectance finishes hide minor wall imperfections better. Higher-reflectance finishes generally clean more easily but make dents, patching and uneven sanding easier to see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Area or surface Useful starting point Decision to make
Ceilings and low-traffic walls Flat or matte Prioritize low reflection and the ability to disguise small defects.
Living rooms, bedrooms and hallways Flat through a satin-family finish Balance lighting, desired reflectance and foot traffic.
Kitchens, bathrooms and high-touch walls A line and sheen explicitly offered for the job Weight moisture exposure, stain resistance and cleaning frequency heavily.
Trim, doors and cabinets Satin, semi-gloss or gloss where offered Accept that stronger reflection highlights surface-preparation defects.

In Sherwin-Williams terminology, flat and matte occupy the lowest-reflectance category. Satin-family terms are low to medium reflectance; pearl and semi-gloss range from medium to high; gloss and high gloss are highly reflective. The exact label terminology varies by product line, so compare the sheen list on the can rather than assuming that “eggshell” in one family looks identical to “low lustre” in another.

  • The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.

  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.

There is an important product-line exception: Emerald and Duration Home are specifically described as providing strong washability, durability and stain resistance across sheen levels. That does not eliminate the visual differences between flat and semi-gloss, but it means you should not dismiss a lower-sheen option solely because you expect difficult cleaning.

What does “washable” mean on a Sherwin-Williams label?

Washability means dirt or other contaminants can be removed without damaging the paint film. It is not identical to “scrubbable,” waterproof or immune to stains; those claims depend on the product, sheen, curing time and cleaning method.

Sherwin-Williams’s washability guidance highlights Emerald Interior and Duration Home as coatings that let contaminants sit on the surface and wash off readily. For any line, allow the coating to cure as directed, use a mild cleaner first and test an inconspicuous area before aggressive scrubbing.

How should I choose a product before buying paint?

Use a short decision sequence rather than selecting by color alone.

  1. Define the exposure. Mark the job as interior or exterior and identify moisture, sunlight, abrasion and cleaning demands.
  2. Identify the substrate. Note whether you are painting drywall, previously painted walls, trim, doors, cabinets, wood siding or another material.
  3. Select the family. Use Emerald for premium hide and cleanability priorities, Duration Home for demanding interior wear, SuperPaint after checking the exact variant, or Cashmere when smooth application and a softer appearance lead the decision.
  4. Choose the sheen. Start with lower reflection for ceilings and imperfect walls; move higher when cleaning and visual emphasis justify it.
  5. Verify the complete label. Record family, interior/exterior designation, sheen, color name, SW number, base and full product code.
  6. Confirm the data sheet. Check coverage, surface preparation, drying and recoat instructions, permitted substrates and any limitations before purchasing enough material for the whole job.

How do I use the color name, SW number and samples?

The SW color number is the most reliable identifier when you need to reproduce a color, while the name helps people discuss it. Neither tells you which family or sheen was used. Write down all three—color name, SW number and product line—when documenting a room.

  • Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.

Color chips, a fan deck or peel-and-stick samples are useful before committing to gallons. View a sample on the actual wall or trim in morning, afternoon and artificial light; surrounding colors and sheen can change how the same color appears. A sample confirms appearance, not final washability or the suitability of the coating for a substrate.

What can contractors and specifiers learn from the MPI catalog?

The MPI catalog is a technical reference rather than a retail-code decoder. It records Sherwin-Williams primer and topcoat submissions for MPI testing and pairs product names with series codes, VOC fields and performance information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes it useful when a specification requires a named product, an MPI category or documented VOC and performance data. It does not establish a meaning for every character printed on a consumer can. For a bid or specification, cite the full product name, series code and current technical documentation together.

What label-reading mistakes cause the most problems?

  • Assuming the color code identifies the formula: the SW number identifies color, not durability or use.
  • Mixing interior and exterior products: confirm the designation even when family names look similar.
  • Choosing sheen without considering the wall: gloss can expose poor patching and sanding.
  • Treating a family name as one formula: variants within SuperPaint and other lines can carry different technologies.
  • Reordering from memory: keep the full product name, sheen, color number, base and code from the original can.
  • Cleaning too aggressively too soon: follow the product’s cure and cleaning instructions before testing washability.

Sherwin-Williams summarizes the principle well: “We offer products for specific jobs, rather than broad formulations.” Reading the label as a set of separate decisions—application, performance, appearance and exact formulation—puts that principle into practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same Sherwin-Williams color in different product lines?

Usually, the same named color can be mixed in multiple lines, but the finished appearance can vary with formula, sheen, substrate and lighting. Keep the color number and the exact product family in your project records so touch-ups use the same coating, not merely the same color name.

Does a higher sheen always make paint more durable?

Higher sheen generally improves cleanability and highlights surface detail, but durability also depends on the product family, preparation and curing. A lower-sheen Emerald or Duration Home coating may meet a room’s cleaning needs without the reflection of semi-gloss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my touch-up look different when the color number matches?

A matching color number can still look different if the original paint came from another family, sheen or batch, or if the wall has aged and collected dirt. Paint a test area and compare it after drying under the room’s normal lighting before touching up a visible section.

Where can I find coverage and recoat information for a specific can?

Use the current technical data sheet for the complete product name and series code printed on the label. Retail shelf descriptions may omit substrate restrictions, cure times or preparation requirements that matter on a real project.
