For AP Art and Design’s Sustained Investigation, describe what you tried, why you tried it, and how the result changed the work in response to your inquiry. Naming a medium or technique is not enough: the writing should make the connection between inquiry, experimentation, revision, and visible evidence clear.

What does “process” mean in AP Art written evidence?

Process is the development of your investigation, not just a list of materials or actions. A useful explanation links four parts: your inquiry, a decision or experiment, what you learned or revised, and the result viewers can see in the portfolio.

For example, “I used watercolor and collage” names materials and techniques. A process-focused explanation would say what you tested with those materials, what the test revealed, and how that finding changed the work in relation to your inquiry. Do not claim a change that the submitted images cannot support.

What do I write for Sustained Investigation?

The Course and Exam Description (CED) asks for two written evidence responses. One identifies the inquiry that guided the Sustained Investigation. The other asks: “Describe how your sustained investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation, and revision guided by your inquiry.” Each response has a limit of 600 characters, including spaces. See the AP Art and Design Course and Exam Description for the current prompts.

Use the first response to state a focused inquiry—not merely a broad subject—and the second to show how you developed work in response to it. Choose a few meaningful moments of practice, testing, or revision rather than trying to recount every step in chronological order.

A practical drafting scaffold

Try this as a planning aid, not as a required College Board template: “I tried [specific action] to explore [part of my inquiry]. When I saw [result or problem], I changed [specific choice], which made [visible effect] clearer.” Replace the bracketed language with what actually happened in your investigation.

How do I describe experimentation and revision?

Make the action and its consequence concrete. “I experimented with composition” is too general on its own. Identify what you varied—such as placement, scale, layering, or another choice relevant to your work—and explain what the comparison taught you. Then name the revision that followed and how it advanced your inquiry.

  • Experimentation: Name what you tested or varied and what you learned from the result.
  • Revision: Describe what you changed, and connect that change to the inquiry.
  • Visible evidence: Point to a difference, detail, or development the submitted images actually show.

These are useful ways to organize your explanation, not a separate unofficial scoring rubric. In its released 2025 2-D portfolio sample, College Board’s rationale for Practice, Experimentation, and Revision connects visual evidence of development with written evidence describing how the investigation developed through those activities. Its Inquiry rationale likewise connects the written inquiry to visual evidence and to the investigation’s development. See the College Board AP 2-D Art and Design exam materials.

What belongs in image-level process fields?

The CED lists short image-documentation fields, including “Idea(s) visually evident,” “Materials used,” “Processes used,” and “Image Citation.” Each listed field has a 100-character maximum, including spaces. Use these fields for concise identification; use the Sustained Investigation written evidence to explain how your choices and revisions developed the investigation.

A process caption can name an action succinctly, but it should not be asked to carry the full explanation of your investigation.

How should the writing work with the images?

Treat the writing and images as connected evidence. If you say a test led you to revise a composition, select images that make the relevant test, change, or development legible. Choose examples that clarify the direction of the Sustained Investigation, not a sequence of events included only because they happened.

The AP Drawing portfolio overview describes 15 Sustained Investigation images, some of which may show details or process, alongside 5 Selected Works. It lists the sections as 60% and 40% of that portfolio’s score, respectively. This is AP Drawing-specific context; follow the current overview and instructions for your own portfolio type. See the AP Drawing portfolio overview.

How do I check the character limits?

  1. Draft the inquiry response. State the question or line of investigation that guided the work.
  2. Draft the development response. Include a specific practice, experiment, or revision and explain its connection to the inquiry.
  3. Count characters, including spaces. Keep each main response within 600 characters. Keep each listed image field within 100 characters.
  4. Check the portfolio-type instructions. Confirm the prompts and image fields in the current instructions for your selected portfolio.
  5. Match each claim to the images. Remove or revise claims that the submitted visual evidence does not make understandable.

Where and when do I submit?

Students submit Sustained Investigation Images, Sustained Investigation Written Evidence, and Selected Works through AP Digital Portfolio, and are responsible for submitting each component as final by the AP Program deadline. The College Board coordinator overview currently lists May 7, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Check the College Board coordinator overview for current submission information.
