A good first quilt is small, made from simple blocks, and guided by a pattern that tells you how much fabric and batting to use. You need a quilt top, batting, backing, thread, needles, and a way to sew the layers together; a sewing machine is helpful but not essential.
What makes a quilt?
A quilt is made from three layers: a top, batting in the middle, and a backing. The top may be one piece of fabric or many pieces sewn into a design. Batting adds warmth and loft. Quilting is the stitching that joins the layers; in everyday conversation, “quilting” can also mean piecing the top. Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance explains the distinction and the basic tools.

Choose a manageable first project
Start with a baby quilt, table runner, or another small project with large, simple blocks. A smaller quilt means fewer pieces and less fabric to handle while you learn the sequence. SINGER suggests beginner-friendly projects, and Missouri Star outlines a beginner path.
Precuts or fabric by the yard?
Precut squares, often sold as charm packs, and strips, often sold as jelly rolls, can save cutting time. Coordinated kits also reduce the work of choosing fabrics that go together. Check that your pattern is specifically written for the precut size or kit you choose. Buying fabric by the yard lets you choose each fabric yourself; follow the pattern for quantities rather than guessing.

Gather the materials and tools
Materials for the quilt
- Fabric: Quilting cotton is a common choice for beginners. Brother recommends 100% cotton that is not too thick. Use the amounts specified by your pattern. Brother’s quilt guide covers fabric and construction basics.
- Batting: The middle layer may be cotton, polyester, wool, or a blend. Compare fiber, feel, warmth, care instructions, and any quilting requirements in your pattern; no single type is best for every quilt.
- Backing: Choose fabric in the size and amount your pattern specifies.
- Thread and needles: Use thread and needles suitable for your fabric and sewing method.
- Binding fabric: Binding covers the raw edges around the finished quilt. Follow your pattern for the amount and preparation.
Cutting and sewing essentials
- A rotary cutter, cutting mat, and gridded quilting ruler make it easier to cut repeated pieces accurately. Choose a ruler that fits the cuts in your pattern; a 6½-by-24-inch ruler is one option listed by Missouri Star’s tool guide, not a required size.
- Scissors are useful for trimming threads and can also cut fabric, particularly when your project uses precuts.
- Pins or clips and an iron help with assembly and pressing.
- A sewing machine that makes a straight stitch is enough for simple piecing, but you can also sew and quilt by hand.
Optional machine conveniences
A walking foot can help feed the quilt’s multiple layers evenly. Specialty feet may help with seam accuracy, but check compatibility with your machine before buying. When choosing a machine, SINGER suggests considering stitch options, speed control, an extension table, and a quarter-inch foot; these are manufacturer selection criteria, not independent comparative test results. Make the quilt in this order
- Read the pattern and prepare the fabric. Confirm the finished size, piece dimensions, fabric quantities, batting requirements, and whether the pattern expects yardage or precuts. Cut the pieces as directed.
- Piece the top. Sew the fabric pieces into blocks, then join the blocks into the quilt top. Press as the pattern instructs.
- Layer the sandwich. Arrange the backing, batting, and top into three flat layers. The backing and top face outward, with batting between them; smooth and secure the layers before quilting.
- Quilt through the layers. Stitch through the top, batting, and backing by machine or by hand. Follow the pattern’s quilting layout and the batting’s instructions.
- Trim and bind. Trim excess batting and backing, then sew binding around the edges to cover the raw layers. Brother’s guide also describes the overall sequence from piecing through finishing.
