In Saudi Arabia, Eid al-Fitr began on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 (1 Shawwal 1445 AH), after the Supreme Court said the crescent had not been confirmed on April 8 and Ramadan therefore ended after 30 days. Participating Minnesota-area organizations following the Fiqh Council of North America’s calculation-based method also set Eid for April 10. Dates were not universal: they depended on the authority or community and the method it followed.
When was Eid al-Fitr in 2024?
There was no single declaration that determined the date for every Muslim community worldwide. Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court declared Wednesday, April 10, 2024, the first day of Eid al-Fitr and 1 Shawwal 1445 AH. A statement from participating Minnesota-area Islamic organizations that adopted the Fiqh Council of North America’s method also set 1 Shawwal for April 10.

The Supreme Court’s Shawwal statement said the crescent was not confirmed on the evening of Monday, April 8; Tuesday, April 9, consequently completed Ramadan’s thirtieth day, making April 10 the first of Shawwal. The Saudi Ramadan announcement and the court’s Shawwal determination, reproduced by Okaz, provide the dates and reasoning.
Why did some communities celebrate on different days?
Communities may use different rules to determine when a lunar month begins. A decision can turn on the authority making it, the method it follows, and the location and timing of an observation or announcement. A physical sighting report and an astronomical visibility criterion are distinct approaches; their outcomes need not produce the same local calendar date.

Saudi Arabia: crescent sighting was not confirmed on April 8
According to the Supreme Court statement reproduced by Okaz, no confirmed Shawwal crescent sighting was established on April 8. The court treated April 9 as Ramadan’s thirtieth day and declared April 10 as Eid. This describes Saudi Arabia’s official determination, not a ruling for every country.
Minnesota organizations: a calculation-based criterion
The participating organizations in the Eastern Twin Cities Islamic Center announcement adopted the FCNA position, which uses a stated astronomical visibility criterion, and set Eid for April 10. Their announcement explicitly recognized that communities following sighting methods might choose another day and said they would respect that decision. Its date applies to the participating organizations, not all Muslims in Minnesota or North America. Read the organizations’ announcement.

Local reports and declarations
The International Astronomical Center’s collection illustrates how reports can vary by place. It includes an observer’s account of seeing the thin crescent from York, England, about 35 minutes after sunset on April 9, and reports Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs declaring April 10 as 1 Shawwal. These are examples from a collection of reports, not an exhaustive global chronology or proof of one date followed everywhere. See the ICOP reports for Shawwal 1445.

For a historical date, check which country’s authority or community the date describes rather than treating an unqualified date as global. The useful details are the local announcement, the method used to determine the month, and when and where any crescent observation was made. March 11 is also recorded as the start of Ramadan by Jordan’s General Iftaa Department, but that Ramadan decision alone does not establish Jordan’s Eid date. Jordan’s Ramadan resolution.
