Ganesh Chaturthi honors the birth of Ganesha, revered as a remover of obstacles and associated with wisdom and new beginnings. It falls on Chaturthi, the fourth day of the waxing fortnight in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, usually in August or September. The date changes each year, and celebrations may last for different lengths of time depending on household and local custom.
When is Ganesh Chaturthi?
Ganesh Chaturthi is observed on Chaturthi, the fourth lunar day of the waxing fortnight in Bhadrapada. Because the Hindu calendar is lunar, the corresponding Gregorian date varies from year to year. Check a current calendar for the year you plan to observe; the official 2026 Maharashtra public-holiday listing gave 14 September 2026, a date that has passed. MMRDA’s 2026 public holidays lists that date, while Incredible India’s festival page gives the broader observance context.

How is Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated?
Many devotees welcome an image or idol of Ganesha into a home or a community space called a pandal. Worship may include prayers, aarti (a ritual of offering light), and offerings of food and other items. Practices and the order of rituals differ among families and places; these are common forms of observance, not requirements followed identically by everyone.
Household and public celebrations
A household observance may center on worship with family, while a public celebration can bring a neighborhood together at a pandal. Public processions may feature music, dance, and group chanting. Maharashtra is especially associated with large public celebrations, but Ganesh Chaturthi is also observed in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa, and Andhra Pradesh, among other places. Incredible India credits Lokmanya Tilak with transforming the festival into a large public celebration in 1893 as a way to unite people during the independence movement.

How long does Ganesh Chaturthi last?
There is no single duration for every observance. Some households and communities keep an idol for a shorter period; others celebrate over several days, with public observances often extending to a farewell on the tenth day. Follow the schedule and customs of the household or community you are joining rather than assuming that every celebration lasts exactly ten days.
What is modak?
Modak is a signature offering associated with Ganesha. One traditional version, ukadiche modak, is a steamed dumpling made with rice flour and filled with coconut and jaggery. Recipes and preferred offerings vary by family and locality, so this is one familiar form rather than a universal recipe.

What happens during visarjan?
Visarjan is the farewell or immersion ritual that marks the end of an idol’s stay in a home or community space. People may accompany the idol in a procession, with singing or chanting, before it is immersed according to local practice. Locations, processions, and arrangements differ; check current local rules before participating.

Traditional shadu-clay idols and growing attention to natural colors, smaller idols, cleanliness, and water conservation are part of current festival discussions. These preferences do not establish that every item marketed as “eco-friendly” is harmless, or that any particular choice eliminates environmental effects. If selecting an idol, consider its material and size, and use the immersion arrangements specified by local authorities. Incredible India and the Maharashtra Department of Tourism both describe environmental awareness as part of contemporary observance.
