When was it unveiled?
The City announced the unveiling on 22 May 2025. It accepted the sculpture as a gift from US artist Brendan Murphy, facilitated by Gullotti Galleries. Why connect the sculpture to Perth’s “City of Light” story?
The City places the artwork in the context of Perth’s “City of Light” story. In its account, residents and businesses left lights on, shone torches and lit lanterns as American astronaut John Glenn passed Australia’s western edge during his 1962 orbital flight. Deputy Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds described BOONJI Spaceman as “a tribute to our unique story.” That is the City’s interpretation of the work’s local significance, rather than a claim of critical consensus.

Why is its Stirling Gardens location temporary?
Stirling Gardens is a local- and State-listed heritage place. The temporary siting received heritage consideration: City council minutes record referral to the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage and support from the Heritage Council. The City’s public-art material says the initial approval was for 12 months; its August 2026 announcement says that approval was extended until the planned relocation. What was the public reaction?
The unveiling prompted criticism, including objections associated with the removal or absence of a previous Stirling Gardens work known as “the kebab.” ABC reported that transport and installation costs were “believed to be” within a stated range; that wording is an estimate, not confirmation of the City’s final expenditure. The available official announcements do not establish a final audited cost. ABC News, Emma Wynne, 23 May 2025
