In painting and graphic design, “dirty texture” describes a distressed surface effect—not one specific material or standardized technique. It can suggest dust, grime, scratches, cracks, rust, grain, or age. You can create it with real marks you photograph or scan, a downloaded texture image, or a digital filter; the best method depends on the look and how much control you need.
What does “dirty texture” mean?
The phrase is used broadly for surface effects that make an image look worn, dusty, damaged, or imperfect. It overlaps with search terms such as “grunge texture,” “dirt texture,” “dust texture,” “dirty glass,” “cracked texture,” and “rust texture,” but these are descriptive terms rather than a formal taxonomy. For painters, the useful question is what kind of surface you want to evoke: scattered dust, mottled grime, sharp scratches, flaking paint, or a repeated material pattern.

Three ways to make a dirty texture
Photograph or scan real marks
For an original source, you can photograph a dirty or marked surface, or scan marks on scanner glass. A 2018 Graphic Design Stack Exchange answer suggests combining a photo of dirty glass with image noise and a slight Gaussian blur, and making light and dark versions of the marks to give more tonal control. Use a downloaded texture image
A texture image gives you ready-made source pixels to place, blend, or use as a reference. Listings vary in subject, quantity, resolution, file type, and whether images tile seamlessly, so check those details against your project rather than choosing by the word “grunge” alone.

Apply a digital filter
Filter Forge’s “Dirty Texture” is described as an overlay that can add a dirt border to another texture. Its page lists diffuse, bump, and normal maps, along with controls such as dirt scale and position. Unlike a static texture image, a filter exposes controls for adjusting the effect. The filter was submitted in 2010, so check its current compatibility with your software before relying on it. Filter details.

Choose the method for your project
- For distinctive, irregular marks: photograph or scan a real surface, then edit the captured source to suit the image. This is the most direct route when you want marks that do not look like a generic overlay.
- For speed and variety: start with a texture pack. Inspect its contents and confirm the dimensions and file format fit the intended use.
- For adjustable generated effects: use a compatible filter when controls such as scale and position matter more than having a fixed source image.
- For a repeating background or 3D material: confirm that the specific texture is seamless. The ArtStation pack above says most of its images are not.
- For commercial work: review the current listing’s license and terms before use. Marketplace availability, pricing, and licensing can change.
What to check before using a texture
Match the source to the destination instead of treating every dirty texture as interchangeable. Check whether the marks are photographic, scanned, composed, or filter-generated; whether the image repeats without a visible seam; and whether resolution and JPG or PNG format suit your workflow. For filter-based work, check software compatibility. For downloadable assets, verify the current license and availability on the marketplace page.
Procedural texture is also a term used in game-texture discussions, including a 2017 thesis on creating procedural textures for games. That context is related, but it does not make “dirty texture” a single prescribed technique. Read the thesis record.
