“Shri Gurudev Datta” is a devotional name and chant associated with Datta, also known as Dattatreya, a Hindu deity understood in some traditions in relation to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and revered as a guru or teacher. Who is Shri Gurudev Datta?
“Shri Gurudev Datta” refers devotionally to Datta or Dattatreya. Indian Scriptures describes Dattatreya as both a deity and a guru figure, and notes that traditions differ in how they understand and depict him. Some relate him to the Hindu triad of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; that account should not be taken as the only Hindu understanding. Indian Scriptures’ overview of Dattatreya also describes examples of worship including puja, arati, chanting, reading Guru Charitra, and bhajans or kirtan.

The phrase is used as a respectful devotional name for Datta in a guru or teacher context. Sanatan Sanstha identifies “Shri Gurudev Datta” (श्री गुरुदेव दत्त) as a chant of Deity Datta. In practice, devotees repeat the name as an invocation; the wording does not imply that every Hindu tradition shares one prescribed interpretation of Datta.

How do people chant the Shri Gurudev Datta mantra?
Sanatan Sanstha’s page gives its own pronunciation and visualization guidance, recommending that devotees visualize Dattaguru while reciting the name. It also offers specific routines and recommends visiting a temple on Thursdays. These are that organization’s devotional recommendations, not universal requirements. Other examples of Datta devotion described by Indian Scriptures and Hindu Janajagruti Samiti include puja, arati, bhajans, kirtan and reading Guru Charitra. Customs may differ by family, community and tradition; these examples are not an exhaustive rulebook. Claims that a chant prevents problems, protects devotees or affects ancestors are religious beliefs rather than empirically established outcomes.

Hindu Janajagruti Samiti describes Datta Jayanti as falling on the full moon of the Hindu lunar month Margshirsha. Its Gregorian-calendar date changes from year to year, so check a current Hindu calendar or local temple notice for the date in a particular year.
