The short answer: ChatGPT seemed to turn everything into Studio Ghibli art because OpenAI’s March 25, 2025 launch put powerful image transformation inside an ordinary conversation. Users could upload a photograph, request a hand-drawn, Ghibli-like treatment, and refine the result without learning a separate image editor. Within roughly a day, the format became a social-media meme.
But Ghibli-like is more accurate than Studio Ghibli art. The trend did not establish Studio Ghibli approval, prove that the studio’s catalog was copied, or settle whether a particular output was lawful. Style resemblance, copyright in an AI-assisted output, and the use of copyrighted material in model training are three different questions.

What happened, and when
The viral moment began on March 25, 2025, when OpenAI launched native GPT-4o image generation inside ChatGPT. The feature could interpret uploaded images, follow detailed instructions, transform photographs, render text more reliably, and revise an image through a conversational back-and-forth. Within roughly a day, social feeds filled with portraits, memes, political images, and familiar photographs transformed into images users described as Studio Ghibli-style or Ghibli-inspired.

The phrase ChatGPT is turning everything into Studio Ghibli art captured the perceived ubiquity of the trend, not a literal product behavior. ChatGPT did not transform every image, and results varied according to the product version, access tier, safety behavior, and the user’s request.
What people meant by Studio Ghibli art
Studio Ghibli art is not a technical image-generation setting or one uniform visual formula. In this context, it is shorthand for a cluster of associations connected with the studio’s films: hand-drawn animation, expressive faces, warm or pastoral color palettes, soft backgrounds, detailed environments, and an emotionally gentle or fantastical atmosphere.
That shorthand draws on a large and varied body of work, including My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and The Boy and the Heron. Those films do not all look identical. Their differences in line, composition, color, mood, character design, and subject matter are part of what gets flattened when people describe an image simply as Ghibli-like.
For a painter, the distinction matters. A soft palette is not the same thing as a filmmaker’s visual language. The recognizable impression also comes from shape design, edge handling, atmospheric perspective, light, gesture, background storytelling, pacing, and the relationship between ordinary spaces and fantastical events. A prompt can imitate some surface cues quickly, but it does not reproduce the artistic process or cultural context that produced the films.
It is also important to distinguish a broad resemblance from identifiable protected material. An image that evokes a general animation aesthetic is not automatically a reproduction of a particular film frame, character, logo, or illustration. Conversely, asking for or generating a recognizable character, scene, costume, frame, or merchandising image can raise different questions from asking for a broad mood or visual vocabulary.
Why the trend spread so quickly
1. Image generation moved into an ordinary conversation
Earlier image-generation workflows often required a separate application, a specialized model, an account on another service, or knowledge of prompt syntax. GPT-4o image generation put the process into a familiar chat interface. A user could upload a photograph, ask for a transformation, inspect the result, and then say what should change next.
That conversational loop removed much of the friction that normally separates an idea from an image. Users did not have to learn layers, masks, color grading, or a dedicated image editor before participating. They could ask for a different expression, background, outfit, composition, or mood in ordinary language. OpenAI also highlighted in-context image understanding, detailed instruction following, image transformation, and more reliable text rendering in its launch material.

A transformed family photograph or familiar meme remained legible while gaining a coherent animation-like treatment. That made the format particularly easy to share: viewers could compare the original and the transformation at a glance, recognize the reference, and understand the joke or sentiment without additional explanation.

The format also encouraged repetition. Once one person converted a portrait, others could apply the same idea to pets, vacation photos, movie stills, advertisements, public figures, and political images. Each new example acted as a demonstration of what the tool could do and a prompt for the next person to try it.
3. The meme crossed from personal experimentation into public messaging
The trend became more than a stream of private experiments when prominent accounts joined it. Sam Altman’s use of a Ghibli-like profile image made the visual treatment part of the public conversation around OpenAI itself. The White House’s use of a politically charged image in a similar treatment widened the controversy further, because it connected a playful image transformation with institutional and political messaging.
Those examples intensified criticism without proving that every use was unlawful. They made the underlying question harder to ignore: who gets to use a recognizable creative language, for what purpose, and with whose consent or credit?
The image’s provenance is not the same as permission
OpenAI said images generated by GPT-4o carried C2PA provenance metadata identifying them as generated by GPT-4o. That can help communicate an image’s origin when the metadata remains attached to the file. It does not, by itself, establish that the image is authorized by Studio Ghibli, that the user owns all rights in the source photograph, or that the output can be used commercially without further review.
Provenance answers a question about where an image came from. Copyright, consent, and licensing ask different questions about what the image contains and how it may be used. Treating a provenance label as a rights clearance would confuse those separate issues.
Three copyright questions that should not be collapsed into one
The Ghibli-like trend produced understandable copyright anxiety, but it does not have one simple legal answer. At least three questions must be kept separate.
1. Can a visual style itself be copyrighted?
Broadly speaking, a style is not treated as a copyrightable work in the same way as a particular drawing, film frame, character design, or illustration. Legal commentary around the trend therefore often said that style alone is not explicitly protected by copyright.

A specific output may reproduce protected expression even if the user describes the request as a style transfer. A close recreation of a known character, scene, composition, costume, logo, or promotional image presents a different analysis from a new image that merely shares broad qualities such as warm colors, hand-drawn contours, or a pastoral setting.

Other legal theories may also matter depending on the image, the jurisdiction, and the use. The practical point is that the word style does not settle whether a particular output copies protected material.
2. Can the generated output receive copyright protection?
The U.S. Copyright Office’s January 29, 2025 report took a human-authorship approach. It stated that generative-AI outputs can receive copyright protection when a human author determines sufficient expressive elements in the result. It also stated that merely writing a prompt is not enough by itself.
Human-authored material that remains perceptible in the result, a creative arrangement of generated elements, or substantial human modifications may support a copyright claim. The answer depends on what the person actually contributed, not simply on whether the image was made in ChatGPT. A user who submits one short instruction and accepts the first result is in a different position from an artist who supplies original elements, makes creative compositional decisions, edits the image extensively, and combines it with human-made work.

3. Was copyrighted material used in training, and what follows from that?
Training is a separate issue from the status of an individual generated image. The fact that users could produce Ghibli-like images did not prove that OpenAI copied Studio Ghibli’s catalog, nor did it establish what specific material was used to train any particular model.
The U.S. Copyright Office’s later report on generative-AI training discussed possible market harm, lost licensing opportunities, and the possibility that stylistic imitation enabled by training could affect creators’ markets. It did not create a universal rule resolving every model, dataset, or training practice.
That leaves several questions open: whether a particular training use is authorized or legally excused, whether a market for licensed style emulation exists, whether a particular output is substantially similar to protected expression, and how those questions should be answered in different countries. The viral images made those questions visible; they did not adjudicate them.

- That every Ghibli-like image was definitively copyright infringement.
- That every image was automatically lawful because a broad style is not itself a copyrightable work.
- That Studio Ghibli approved, licensed, or endorsed the trend.
- That Studio Ghibli sued OpenAI over the original March 2025 image wave.
- That the ability to imitate an aesthetic proves exactly which works were used in model training.
The ethical argument goes beyond copyright
Criticism of the trend was not limited to whether a court would find infringement. Artists and researchers raised broader concerns about attribution, consent, labor displacement, environmental cost, and the devaluation of human-made work.
The concern about labor is especially direct: a generative system can produce an instantly recognizable approximation of an animation tradition without showing the studies, rejected drawings, background work, compositional decisions, or collaborative labor behind a finished film. For working artists, that can feel less like ordinary inspiration and more like industrializing a visual language while separating the result from the people who developed it.
Hayao Miyazaki had previously expressed strong criticism of AI-generated animation. Those remarks are relevant to the cultural context, but they were made before and apart from the 2025 trend; they were not a direct legal response to these ChatGPT images.
There is also a difference between a documented concern and a proven economic outcome. It is reasonable to discuss the risk of reduced attribution, lost commissions, or weakened licensing markets. It would be excessive to claim that this single trend caused a measurable collapse in animators’ employment without a study demonstrating that result.
In other words, an image can be ethically controversial even when its copyright status is uncertain. Copyright asks whether particular legal rights were violated. The ethical debate also asks whether consent was obtained, whether creative labor is being fairly valued, and whether a tool’s convenience is shifting costs onto artists and communities.

In October 2025, CODA, a Japanese organization representing rights holders including Studio Ghibli and other Japanese media companies, sent OpenAI a written request concerning Sora 2. CODA said it had observed large amounts of Sora 2 output closely resembling Japanese content or images and asked OpenAI to address concerns about unauthorized use and training.
On April 1, 2026, CODA reported that OpenAI had told it on March 27 that Sora 2 would be discontinued as a product, including its app and API. CODA described the development as a milestone following its earlier request and continuing discussions.

What a responsible user should take from the trend
- Describe the visual goal without treating a studio name as a magic filter. If the goal is a warm, hand-drawn fantasy illustration, describe the composition, palette, lighting, setting, character emotion, and level of detail. Avoid assuming that a broad label gives permission to reproduce a specific character or frame.
- Use a source image you have the right to transform. Uploading your own photograph does not automatically resolve the privacy or consent interests of other people shown in it. Be particularly careful with private, sensitive, or identifying images.
- Do not call the result official. A generated image that resembles a studio’s visual language is not automatically endorsed, licensed, or produced by that studio.
- Keep track of your contribution. Save original source material, major edits, compositional decisions, and the final human modifications if you plan to publish or sell the result. The U.S. copyright analysis for AI-assisted work turns on human creative contribution, not simply on the fact that a prompt was written.
- Treat provenance as useful information, not a legal clearance. C2PA metadata may identify the image as GPT-4o-generated, but it does not answer whether the source material was authorized or whether the final use is permissible.
- Study authorized work instead of treating imitation as the only way to learn. An official Studio Ghibli art book can show the color work, layouts, environments, and production decisions that a one-click approximation leaves out. VIZ identifies The Art of Spirited Away as an English-language book collecting color illustrations from the film, while Simon & Schuster lists VIZ Media’s The Art of The Boy and the Heron, published May 27, 2025, as an official art book containing commentary and interviews. These are authorized references to animation craft, not tools for generating AI images.
For a personal joke, the practical risks may be limited compared with a commercial campaign, political communication, or product marketed as official. The more public, commercial, or recognizable the use, the more important it becomes to review the source image, the output, the intended audience, and the law that applies where the work will be published.
Why this moment mattered
The Ghibli-like image wave was a collision of product design, fandom, internet memetics, copyright uncertainty, and creative labor. The technology was notable because it made image transformation conversational. The meme was notable because it applied that convenience to one of the world’s most recognizable animation traditions.
Its lasting significance is not that ChatGPT literally turned everything into Studio Ghibli art. It is that a general-purpose image generator made stylistic imitation so easy, visible, and repeatable that questions about authorship, consent, training, and cultural ownership could no longer remain abstract. The trend showed the social power of conversational image generation while leaving the hardest legal questions unresolved.
