Furoshiki is a Japanese technique for wrapping or carrying an item in a nearly square piece of fabric. Fold and knot the cloth around the gift, and the wrapping becomes a reusable handkerchief, scarf, bandanna or cloth instead of disposable paper. The basic method is simple; choosing the right cloth and wrap for the object is what makes the result look polished.
What furoshiki means
Furoshiki refers to both the square wrapping cloth and the method of folding and tying it. A purpose-made furoshiki is optional: any suitable square fabric with corners long enough to knot can work.

The basic knot is mamusubi, a square knot. It holds the cloth securely but can be untied to return the fabric to a flat, reusable piece.
How to wrap a gift with furoshiki
- Choose a square cloth. Use fabric large enough to reach around the item and leave workable lengths at the corners. A handkerchief, bandanna or scarf may substitute for a dedicated wrapping cloth.
- Place the gift in the center. Set the object on the cloth rather than starting at an edge. For a rectangular package, align its longest side with the cloth’s layout so the corners meet evenly.
- Bring two opposing corners together. Lift the corners over the gift and cross them above it.
- Tie a mamusubi. Make a square knot, tightening it enough to hold the gift without crushing it. A neat, flat knot is part of the finished appearance.
- Secure the remaining corners. Bring the other pair together and tie them, adjusting the folds so the fabric lies smoothly around the object.
- Shape and check the wrap. Tuck or fan excess fabric, then lift the package by the knot to make sure the cloth does not slip. Untie it gently when the recipient wants to reuse the fabric.
There is no single universal cloth size: the correct proportion depends on the object, the fabric’s thickness and how much corner length is available for tying. Practice with a spare cloth before wrapping a valuable or unusually shaped gift.

Choose the style for the object and occasion
| Style | Best suited to | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Otsukai-tsutsumi | Casual gifts and bento | A basic everyday wrap and a practical starting point. |
| Hira-tsutsumi | Formal presentations | A knot-free style that gives a clean, restrained finish. |
| Futatsu-musubi | Long, thin objects | Uses two tied points to hold elongated items securely. |
| Suika-tsutsumi | Large, round objects | Shapes the cloth around a bulky circular form. |
| Awase-tsutsumi | Two similar objects | Combines a pair of items in one balanced bundle. |
These names and uses are described by JAPAN HOUSE. They are choices, not rigid rules: the same cloth can be adapted when its size, weight and drape allow it.
What fabric works best?
- Size: The corners must reach over the item with enough length left to tie.
- Handling: A fabric that folds cleanly and holds a knot is easier to make presentable than one that is extremely slippery or bulky.
- Strength: Match the cloth’s durability to the gift’s weight, especially if the recipient will carry the package by its knot.
- Reuse: Choose fabric that can be washed or used repeatedly if the recipient is likely to keep it in rotation.
- Appearance: Solid colors, patterns and texture can signal the occasion, but avoid a design that hides the folds or knot.
A dedicated furoshiki wrapping cloth offers convenient proportions and designs, but it is not required. A suitable square scarf or bandanna already in your home may be the better choice.

Why the technique has lasting appeal
A September 2020 Government of Japan article describes nearly square cloths being used to wrap and carry belongings, with different methods for different shapes. It says the practice of wrapping valuable objects in cloth is said to have started in the Nara period (710–794), while broad public use developed in the Edo period (1603–1867). The account connects the word to furo (“bath”) and shiki (“to spread”), recalling bathhouse use for keeping belongings together.
The same history describes later use for travel, a decline as lifestyles changed, and a modern revival. Furoshiki is therefore more than a sustainability label: it is a versatile everyday cloth whose wrapping method can also reduce the need for single-use paper. The cloth can be untied and used again rather than discarded after one gift.

When a different approach is better
- Very large or heavy items: A cloth may not provide enough corner length or support; use a box, bag or a purpose-built carrier.
- Sharp-edged objects: Pad points first so they do not catch or tear the fabric.
- Slippery fabrics: If the knot loosens during a lift test, change the cloth or use a more secure style.
- Formal gifts: Consider hira-tsutsumi if a visible knot would look too casual.
