It is called a drop shadow because the shaded shape appears offset behind or beneath an object, as though the object has been dropped onto a surface and cast a shadow. In design, that effect can make lettering or a graphic look raised from the page. The name describes how the effect looks; the available sources do not establish who coined the phrase or when.

What does “drop” mean in drop shadow?
“Drop” describes the shadow’s placement: it sits apart from the object, usually below or behind it. That visible gap suggests that the object is lifted above the surface. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s archived Communications Stylebook defines a drop shadow as “the shading effect used to give the appearance of raised type or graphics on the designed page.” EPA Communications Stylebook glossary

How does a drop shadow work on screen?
In CSS, the drop-shadow() filter makes a blurred, offset version of an image’s alpha mask, colors it, and composites it below the image. The alpha mask follows the image’s opaque shape, so an irregular graphic can cast a shadow that follows its outline. MDN’s CSS reference
Drop shadow versus box shadow

Both can create a sense of separation, but they do not use the same boundary. For a cutout graphic or transparent image, the distinction matters: a shadow following the artwork’s silhouette is different from one following the rectangular image box.

Why designers still use shadows
A shadow gives the eye a cue that one element sits above another. The U.S. Web Design System describes its shadow tokens as setting drop-shadow size and notes that shadows are often used to indicate elevation. U.S. Web Design System: Shadow utility

That makes “drop shadow” a useful name in both page design and interface design: the object seems to hover above a surface because its shadow is displaced beneath it. The term explains the effect’s appearance, without implying that the object or shadow literally moves.
