Taiwan’s Father’s Day falls every year on August 8, a fixed date also known as 88 Day. The date is wordplay: 八 (bā, “eight”) sounds like 爸爸 (bàba, “Dad”). It is a Taiwan observance, not a universal Father’s Day date.
Why August 8?
The date’s familiar explanation is linguistic. In Mandarin, 八 (bā, “eight”) and 爸爸 (bàba, “Dad”) sound alike, so “eight-eight” evokes “Dad-Dad.” Taiwan Bilingual Hub and Jinwen University of Science and Technology both describe this sound-based connection. How the observance began
Taiwan Bilingual Hub reports that the Eight-Eight Father’s Day idea began in Shanghai in 1945 and later reached Taiwan. Jinwen University offers an additional commemorative explanation: it describes the day as remembering people who contributed to the War of Resistance against Japan, as well as thanking fathers. These are attributed accounts of the date’s background; they do not, by themselves, establish a complete chronology of how the observance was adopted in Taiwan.

When is Father’s Day in Taiwan?
It is August 8 every year, rather than a Sunday that changes annually. The Office of the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) confirmed the annual August 8 observance in a release dated August 8, 2000. Presidential Office release.
In 2026, August 8 falls on a Saturday, according to Jinwen University’s 2026 calendar. That weekday applies to 2026 only; the recurring date remains August 8.

Ways to mark the day
