Mawlid al-Nabi—also called Milad un-Nabi, or mevlid in Turkish contexts—is a commemoration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. Many Sunni communities associate it with 12 Rabi al-Awwal, while many Shia communities associate it with 17 Rabi al-Awwal. Neither the date nor the decision to observe Mawlid is universal, and its Gregorian date changes from year to year.

When is Mawlid observed?

Mawlid is observed in Rabi al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Many Sunni communities mark 12 Rabi al-Awwal; many Shia communities mark 17 Rabi al-Awwal. These are common associations, not rules followed by every Muslim community. The Australian Government Department of Education summarizes the customary dates and notes that practices differ (Australian Government Department of Education).

Because the Islamic calendar follows lunar months, the corresponding Gregorian date shifts each year. Local moon-sighting practices and calendar calculations can also produce a difference of about a day. Observances commonly begin at sunset on the preceding evening; USC’s calendar gives expected date windows rather than a single date applicable everywhere (USC Office of Religious and Spiritual Life).

Is Mawlid the confirmed birthday of the Prophet Muhammad?

No exact Gregorian birth date is established by the sources cited here. The annual Mawlid observance and the historical date of Muhammad’s birth are separate questions: a community may mark a day in Rabi al-Awwal without claiming that its Gregorian equivalent is his precisely known birthday.

The Egyptian Ministry of Awqaf describes disagreement about the specific day in Rabi al-Awwal and presents April 20, 571 CE as a favored historical reconstruction associated with Mahmoud Pasha al-Falaki. This is a proposed reconstruction, not a universally agreed date (Egyptian Ministry of Awqaf).

  • Qur’an recitation, prayers, and blessings on the Prophet.
  • Talks, readings, or educational activities about his life and teachings.
  • Devotional poetry or songs, and family or community gatherings.
  • Charitable activity and shared meals.
  • Processions, forums, or other locally established programs.

These are examples, not required elements. In Malaysia, the Selangor Mufti Department describes programs such as processions, talks, forums, qasidah, blessings, and readings from the Prophet’s life; it also quotes Malaysia’s Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) describing the celebration as an annual official government event at federal and state levels (Jabatan Mufti Negeri Selangor). In Turkey, mevlid ceremonies may include Qur’an recitation, blessings, prayers, and passages from Süleyman Çelebi’s Vesîletü’n-Necât (Turkey’s Presidency of Religious Affairs).

Do all Muslims observe Mawlid?

No. Muslims differ over whether Mawlid should be observed as a religious occasion and, where it is observed, what form it should take. The Australian Government notes that some Muslims do not observe it as a religious occasion, while others use it to reflect on the Prophet’s life, character, and teachings.

Some authorities permit or encourage suitable commemorations, while others do not treat the occasion as part of their religious practice. The Selangor Mufti Department presents a permissive view conditioned on good acts and avoiding prohibited conduct. Turkey’s Presidency of Religious Affairs says mevlid recitation may be beneficial when consistent with its meaning and purpose, but “it should not be viewed as a religious obligation” (Turkey’s Presidency of Religious Affairs). These are views attributed to particular institutions, not a single ruling shared by all Muslims.
