A salvaged multi-pane window sash can become a wall-hung photo display: fit a photo or mat to each opening, arrange them behind the divided lights, then mount the sash with hardware chosen for its condition, weight and wall. The result keeps the original frame as part of the design rather than installing a new window in a wall.

Choose a sash that suits the display
Start with a salvaged sash whose pane layout and proportions work with the images and wall space you have in mind. Check that the frame is stable and the glass is intact before planning to hang it. A decorative project is not a reason to assume every old sash is sound or that its glass is safe to handle.
Consider the finish as well as the layout. A worn or painted surface can be part of the piece’s character; decide whether to preserve it before sanding, repainting or sealing anything. The project examples range from a divided-light photo display to more decorative painted or reflective treatments.

Choose how images will sit on the sash

Fit photos and mats to divided panes
For a multi-pane photo display, fit each opening individually rather than assuming all panes are identical. This Old House’s example uses a 1920s six-pane casement and measures from the centers of the surrounding muntins—the strips dividing the panes—because the mats overlap the woodwork.

- Measure each pane opening from the centers of its surrounding muntins.
- Cut a mat for each image, allowing its edges to overlap the muntins as planned. Trim evenly; a paper cutter or utility knife can be used for the cuts.
- Attach each photo to its mat with framer’s tape.
- Arrange the matted photos on the back of the sash, then make small position adjustments until they appear centered in their openings.
Do a dry arrangement before attaching or securing anything permanently. Individual openings can vary, and a slight shift may improve the visual centering without requiring a new cut.
Prepare the frame and finish
Clean the glass with window cleaner if the chosen treatment leaves it visible. For bare wood, the This Old House project recommends beeswax. For painted sashes, it recommends sealing the finish under clear polyurethane as a lead precaution. That is a precaution for the described finish, not a guarantee that an old coating is lead-free; avoid disturbing paint unless you have considered the hazards and appropriate handling for the particular sash.

Keep preparation proportionate to the piece. If preserving patina matters, avoid sanding or covering original details simply to make the sash look new. Any coating should be compatible with the existing surface and suited to the finish you want.
Mount the sash for its actual weight and wall
Mounting hardware must be fixed securely to the sash and matched to the object’s condition, dimensions and weight, as well as the wall construction. Eye hooks and picture wire are used in the This Old House example and in the Weekand hanging guide; neither example establishes a universal safe load for every reclaimed frame or wire. Follow the hardware maker’s rated use and select a wall fastener suitable for the wall.

- Assess the sash’s condition and weight, including any glass, mats and photos that will remain in it.
- Choose sash-mounted hardware rated and suited to the object. The cited project uses eye hooks on either side of the frame, with picture wire threaded through them and its ends twisted to secure.
- Choose the wall fastener for the wall and the load. Engineer Fix’s guide recommends anchoring the wall fastener into a stud; the appropriate fixing still depends on the actual wall and hardware.
- Before letting go, check that the sash is seated securely and hangs as intended. If the frame or its attachment points are deteriorated, do not rely on them to carry the load.
Two hanging points can also help keep a frame from swinging out of alignment and allow small side-to-side adjustments, but use them only as part of a mounting setup appropriate to the sash and wall.
Set the orientation and placement
Try the sash horizontally or vertically according to its proportions, pane arrangement and available wall space. Related salvaged decor can sit nearby if it suits the room, but let the sash’s own layout and finish guide the arrangement. A balanced display starts with the piece itself: choose photos, mats and placement that work with its openings instead of forcing every pane into the same image size.

Time and cost in one published example
This Old House’s project page, updated June 10, 2026, rates its example 1 out of 5 for skill and estimates two hours. It lists a window “from $25 at salvage yards” and $33 for mats, tape and hanging hardware. These are that publisher’s estimates for its example, not current universal prices or a quote for a sash of any particular size or condition. Local salvage availability and the materials needed for your design will vary.
