The most recent Year of the Dragon began on February 10, 2024, and ended on January 29, 2025, when the Year of the Snake began. It was the Year of the Wood Dragon. These dates follow the Chinese lunisolar calendar, so a zodiac year does not begin on January 1 or match a Gregorian calendar year.

When did the 2024 Year of the Dragon start and end?
The 2024 Dragon year began on February 10, 2024. It ended on January 29, 2025, the first day of the Year of the Snake, according to the Congressional Research Service’s Lunar New Year: Fact Sheet, updated January 21, 2025.
The familiar phrase “Year of the Dragon” refers to a recurring place in the Chinese zodiac cycle, not to every date in a Gregorian year. A person’s zodiac sign can therefore depend on whether their birthday falls before or after Lunar New Year.

Why was 2024 the Year of the Wood Dragon?
The Chinese zodiac pairs a sequence of 12 animals with five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The animal cycle and element cycle interlock; the resulting 60-year sexagenary cycle is made up of ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches. The dragon is followed by the snake in the animal sequence. The Smithsonian identifies 2024 as the Year of the Wood Dragon.
Because the cycles repeat, “Dragon” alone does not identify the element or a unique year. The element depends on the year’s place in the larger cycle.
What does the Dragon symbolize?
In the Chinese zodiac tradition, the dragon is associated with auspicious qualities. The Smithsonian summarizes its symbolism this way: “The dragon represents power, luck, and creativity.” Those are cultural associations, not scientifically established personality traits or predictions about what will happen in a dragon year.
People may encounter different interpretations in different communities and sources. It is more accurate to describe the symbolism as part of a tradition than to assume that every person who observes Lunar New Year shares one belief about the zodiac.

No. Lunar New Year is an umbrella description for observances celebrated by many communities, while their names, calendars, zodiac details and customs differ. The Congressional Research Service covers Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese traditions; the Smithsonian also cautions that regions across Asia celebrate in varied ways and may follow different zodiacs.
- Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival or Chun Jie, follows the Chinese zodiac sequence.
- Vietnamese Tết has its own zodiac distinctions: the Associated Press notes that Vietnam uses a cat where the Chinese zodiac uses a rabbit.
- Korean Seollal is a Lunar New Year observance with its own cultural context; it should not be treated as simply another name for Chinese New Year.
These examples are not an exhaustive guide to Lunar New Year traditions. Customs also vary among families and diaspora communities, so no single description applies to everyone who celebrates.

How is Chinese New Year celebrated?
The Congressional Research Service describes Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, as a 15-day festival. Common customs include gathering with family and friends, eating auspicious foods, honoring elders and ancestors, exchanging money gifts, and taking part in cultural activities. Which customs are observed—and how—varies by region and family. The Associated Press overview of Lunar New Year also discusses food and the diversity of celebrations.
For an accessible orientation, the CRS notes that Lunar New Year is celebrated in many parts of Asia and in Asian communities around the world. That broad reach does not make the observances interchangeable: the specific holiday name and community context matter.
