Japanese artist Yoshida Hiroshi made images of India that circulated as postcard subjects in the 1930s. Their views of landmarks from the Taj Mahal to the Golden Temple connect his travels in India with shin-hanga, a modern woodblock-print movement that reworked older Japanese print traditions.
Who made the postcards, and when?
A 2015 report by Scroll.in identifies Yoshida Hiroshi as the artist behind a set of postcards depicting India in the 1930s, and says the images were made in Japanese woodblock style for Western audiences. It places Yoshida’s travels in India and Southeast Asia in 1929–1930 and says his son, Yoshida Toshi, accompanied him.
The available account establishes that a reported postcard set existed, but not its exact size, complete publication history, or whether the full historic set can now be accessed. It is safest to distinguish the postcard subjects from individual prints and modern products reproducing related images.

What does “Japanese woodblock style” mean here?
The report situates Yoshida’s work in shin-hanga, a movement that renewed Japanese woodblock printmaking. It contrasts shin-hanga with ukiyo-e, an older popular commercial art form, and describes the later movement as retaining familiar woodblock methods and subjects while incorporating Western approaches to light and depth. “Japanese woodblock style” is therefore a broad description; shin-hanga is the more specific context given for Yoshida’s work.
Scroll.in also reports that Yoshida made multiple versions of some scenes, including the Taj Mahal, changing color and lighting. It says he sought to control carving and printing himself, rather than follow the more usual collaborative practice described in the article. These are details from a secondary account, not independently confirmed technical records for each image.

Are modern listings original postcards or prints?
No. A seller’s listing for “Ajmer Gate, Jaipur” describes a giclée reproduction of a Yoshida image, not an original postcard or a 1931 original print. A modern reproduction can be a way to display the image, but its medium and retail availability do not establish historical provenance or authenticity. Check whether a listing identifies itself as a reproduction, names the image it reproduces, and explains its source before treating it as a collectible original.
Likewise, a modern Taj Mahal postcard replica appearing in retail results is not established as part of Yoshida’s historic postcard set. The existence of a related product should not be taken as evidence that the original cards are currently sold as a complete set.
