Courthouse Steps is a Log Cabin variation: sew strips in pairs to opposite sides of a center square, then add the next pair to the other sides. The sequence creates a symmetrical stepped block, and choices in fabric contrast, scale, and layout can make it look traditional, scrappy, modern, or graphic. Here are 18 documented design directions, plus guidance for choosing fabrics and construction.
What makes a Courthouse Steps quilt?
In conventional Log Cabin construction, strips are often added continuously around the center. Courthouse Steps instead adds a pair of strips to opposite sides, then a pair to the remaining sides. Repeating that order creates balanced horizontal and vertical bands. Strong light-dark contrast helps the stepped geometry stand out; a coordinated palette or varied scraps can change the effect.
The Illinois State Museum describes the construction and records a Courthouse Steps Log Cabin quilt made by Betsy Snell Miller in Aurora, Illinois, in 1864. That collection record documents one quilt; it does not establish the block’s origin date.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture documents a Courthouse Steps quilt by Martha Jane Pettway of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, made with red wool and undyed cotton, including repurposed sugar sacks. Its record describes a red center, stepped strips, and an asymmetrical improvised section. The museum offers an interpretation of the courthouse’s significance to African American communities; that interpretation should not be treated as the universal meaning of every Courthouse Steps quilt.

Coordinated color and contrast
- Seaside Steps in cool batiks. Use cool batik prints for a coordinated, water-inspired palette.
- Purple batiks with a striking light fabric. Set saturated purple prints against a light fabric to emphasize the stepped bands.
- Two-tone crib quilt. Limit the palette to two tones and use the setting to create diagonal lines across the quilt.
- Black centers and inner border. Repeat black at the centers and inner border to visually unify a scrappy setting.
- Scrappy rainbow. Move through rainbow colors while keeping a deliberate value plan so the block remains readable.
- Holiday table runner. Use a seasonal palette and a five-block setting for a table runner.
Scale and strip-piecing variations
- Small Steps with 1-inch strips. Narrow strips make compact, detailed stepped blocks.
- Supersize Log Cabin in Courthouse Steps style. Use the paired-strip sequence at a larger scale for a bold block.
- Quick throw. Choose a throw-size setting for a practical project with a clear, repeatable layout.
- Scrappy bed quilt. Bring varied fabrics together in a larger quilt, using a repeated value or color rule to keep the overall design coherent.
- Wall hanging. Use a small-scale setting to try a color plan or quilting design before making a larger quilt.
Mixed blocks and added details
- Double Nine-Patch and Courthouse Steps wall hanging. Combine the stepped blocks with Double Nine-Patch units for a mixed-block composition.
- Courthouse Steps with appliqué. Add appliqué as a separate decorative element to a strip-pieced design.
- Churn Dash, Courthouse Steps, and Irish Chain setting. Alternate different block families for a more complex quilt top.
Documented patterns and construction approaches
- Missouri Star jelly-roll quilt. Missouri Star Quilt Co.’s pattern specifies a 76 × 76-inch quilt using one roll of 2.5-inch print strips and one roll of 2.5-inch background strips, plus border and binding fabric. Its listed requirements are specific to that pattern: ¾ yard inner border, 1½ yards outer border, and ¾ yard binding.
- Riley Blake strip-pieced block. Riley Blake Designs’ 2023 pattern starts with a center unit, adds a pair of strips to the left and right, then adds a pair at the top and bottom. Follow its placement guide and measurements for the chosen project.
- National Quilt Museum foundation-paper-pieced rainbow. Guest designer Go-Go Kim’s March 2019 pattern uses foundation paper piecing and a scrappy rainbow of light, medium, and dark fabrics. The sample block measures 10.5 inches unfinished and 10 inches finished. Kim describes her interpretation as: “Courthouse Steps are a variation of the traditional log cabin that represents home.”
- Asymmetrical improvisational interpretation. Take inspiration from the Pettway quilt documented by the National Museum of African American History and Culture: pair a stepped arrangement with an intentionally irregular area and repurposed materials. Treat it as one documented interpretation, not a required construction method.
Quick comparison
| Design direction | Useful for | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Cool or purple batiks | Coordinated color and bold contrast | Separate values clearly enough to show the stepped bands |
| Two-tone crib quilt | A limited palette and diagonal setting | Use the pattern’s placement guide |
| Scrappy rainbow or bed quilt | Using varied fabrics | Keep a value or color rule for cohesion |
| Small Steps | Fine, compact piecing | Narrow strips call for careful sewing and trimming |
| Missouri Star jelly-roll quilt | A defined, larger project using precut strips | Its 76 × 76-inch size and supply list apply to that pattern only |
| Wall hanging or table runner | A smaller display project | Choose a setting and quilting plan suited to the finished use |
| Mixed-block or appliqué design | Combining techniques | Plan the block arrangement before assembly |
| Foundation paper piecing | Precise strip placement and miniature-scale work | Check printed scale and follow the pattern’s paper-removal instructions |
How to choose fabrics and a pattern
There is no universal fabric requirement for a Courthouse Steps quilt. Needs depend on the specific pattern, finished size, number of blocks, borders, and whether you use scraps, yardage, or precut strips. For example, the Missouri Star pattern’s two rolls of 2.5-inch strips and border and binding yardage are for its 76-inch-square quilt, not a general formula.
- Choose the project type. Decide whether you want a crib quilt, throw, bed quilt, runner, or wall hanging.
- Choose the construction and scale. Regular strip piecing suits the traditional paired-strip sequence; foundation paper piecing is another option for precise placement. Check finished and unfinished block dimensions in the pattern.
- Plan contrast. Sort fabrics by value as well as color. A distinct light-dark relationship helps the block read, while a scrappy rainbow can still work when its values are planned.
- Check the full materials list. Account for centers, strips, background, borders, binding, backing, and batting according to the selected pattern.
- Test the layout. Arrange blocks before sewing rows, especially when combining block types, using diagonal lines, or building a scrappy setting.
Basic strip piecing typically uses a sewing machine, quilting ruler, rotary cutter, cutting mat, iron, and the pattern’s specified measurements. The National Quilt Museum foundation-paper-pieced pattern lists a quilting ruler or Add-A-Quarter ruler as a tool option; that ruler is not necessary for every Courthouse Steps project.
