Sparkle Photoshop brushes add twinkles, glitter, glow, starbursts and light trails without drawing every highlight by hand. The often-cited list of 18 sets comes from a SmashingApps article published February 10, 2012. Because that page is now more than 14 years old, its entries should be treated as a historical index rather than 18 currently verified downloads. Several names are generic, and current files, creators, formats and licenses are not established for every item.

What a sparkle Photoshop brush can be
“Sparkle” describes an appearance, not one technical brush type. A pack may contain star and twinkle stamps, glitter particles, fairy-dust dots, lens-flare-like highlights, curved light trails, soft radiance, bokeh-like lights, dense glitter textures or decorative borders. Some downloads called brushes are actually PNG overlays, JPEG textures, vectors, PSD files or actions. Only an .abr file is a Photoshop brush pack.

The 18 historical entries
SmashingApps repeats labels such as “Sparkle Brushes,” so the surviving page does not uniquely identify every creator or destination. “License unclear” means you should not use the asset in paid client work, products or redistributed packs without finding the creator’s terms or obtaining permission. “Unavailable or unverified” means no current download can be responsibly promised from the supplied evidence.

Do not download an executable “brush installer,” click misleading buttons or assume that a repost preserves the original license. Prefer a creator page and a ZIP containing an ABR file. If a historical link redirects, is dead or offers only an image, record it as unavailable rather than substituting an unidentified file.

Install an ABR pack in Photoshop desktop
- Download the pack and extract the ZIP or RAR archive.
- Confirm that the extracted file ends in
.abr. A PNG, PSD or JPEG needs a different workflow. - Open Photoshop and choose Window > Brushes.
- Open the Brushes-panel menu and choose Import Brushes.
- Select the ABR file and confirm. Photoshop places the set in the Brushes panel.
- Select a brush and test it on a new, empty layer.
Adobe also supports double-clicking an ABR file while Photoshop is open. The documented desktop workflow is available in Adobe’s brush-import help.

- Open a file and select Paint.
- Open the Brush presets menu.
- Select the Add icon, then Import from files.
- Choose the custom brush file.
See Adobe’s Photoshop on the web instructions; this path is different from desktop Photoshop.

Photoshop on iPad and Adobe Fresco
Open the brush panel, select the + button, browse to the ABR file and add it. Adobe describes these distinctions on its Photoshop brushes page.
Make the effect look intentional
Use separate, editable layers
- Stamp on a new layer rather than directly on the artwork.
- Keep large hero sparkles, small particles and glow on separate layers.
- Use a layer mask to remove marks from faces, text counters or important edges.
- Try Screen or Linear Dodge (Add) for light, then reduce opacity; Normal mode with a tinted pale color can be subtler.
Vary scale, depth and color
- Change size, angle, spacing, scattering, opacity and flow instead of repeating one stamp.
- Place the brightest marks near the focal point and use fewer large stars.
- Blur background particles more than foreground particles.
- Match the sparkle’s temperature to the scene; pale warm or cool tones usually blend better than pure white everywhere.
- Use a small, controlled Gaussian Blur for bloom, not a blanket blur over the whole layer.
Account for old or small brush tips
Older packs may have been made for small web documents. A tip that looks crisp on a social post can pixelate on a poster or print file. If that happens, reduce the document size, find a larger-resolution version, build the shape with vectors, or reserve the brush for tiny accents. Do not claim print suitability unless the source specifies it or you have tested it.

- Redistribution or resale of the ABR file is prohibited or permitted as stated.
- The license has not been replaced, withdrawn or limited to personal projects.
- The file comes from a trustworthy page and is not an executable installer.
If the creator page or license has disappeared, treat the item as license unclear and request permission or choose a documented alternative. The original SmashingApps article also advised readers to read each individual license because terms can change.

Troubleshooting
Photoshop does not recognize the file
Extract the archive, check the extension, and retry Window > Brushes > Import Brushes. If the file is PNG, PSD or JPEG, it is not an ABR pack. Re-download from the original creator; a renamed or corrupted file will not become a brush by changing its extension.
The imported set is missing
Open Window > Brushes, scroll through the groups and search for the imported name. Restart Photoshop if the panel did not refresh.
The result is harsh or repetitive
Lower layer opacity, brush opacity or flow; paint with a pale tint; mask unwanted marks; vary angle and size; and adjust spacing or scattering in Brush Settings. Regularly spaced identical stars are the fastest route to a synthetic-looking result.

Photoshop includes a built-in brush library and Adobe’s Get More Brushes workflow. Start with Adobe’s current brush documentation and Adobe’s brush resource page. You can also create a custom sparkle from vector stars, shape layers or licensed PNG overlays when a brush is unnecessary. These options avoid relying on a dead 2012 download, but each asset still needs its own license review.
Photoshop subscription context
ABR files require compatible brush software; owning a brush file does not include Photoshop. Adobe’s U.S. plans page showed Photoshop at US$22.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly, Photography at US$19.99 per month, and a seven-day Photoshop trial when checked August 18, 2026. Creative Cloud Pro was shown at a regular US$69.99 per month with a promotional US$34.99 monthly signal for the first three months for eligible new subscribers. Prices, taxes, billing terms, regional availability and eligibility can change; verify the current offer at Adobe Photoshop plans. Readers who only need occasional sparkle overlays may prefer a free editor or standalone licensed image asset instead of a Photoshop subscription.
