The old full-page Twitter background is no longer the right format to design for. Today, the image people usually mean is an X profile header, also called a banner. For a new header, start with Canva or Adobe Express, make a static image at X’s recommended 1500 × 500 pixels, and upload it through your profile editor. The five services in the original 2009 list are historical references—not verified current recommendations.
What “Twitter background” means now
Twitter profiles once let users place a large background image around the page content. X’s current profile design instead uses a horizontal header photo or banner, a separate square profile image that overlaps its lower-left area, and a theme color. An old full-page background may have side graphics or text that will be cropped, covered, or misplaced in a modern header. It needs redesigning, not simply uploading unchanged.

Two free design sites to start with
Only two current tools are established by the available first-party information here. They are useful starting points, but neither should be described as wholly free: both offer a mix of free and paid templates or assets. Choose a template editor if you want a quick design; use a blank canvas if you already have artwork and only need to fit it to the header.
Canva: easiest for a quick template-based header
Canva’s X/Twitter header maker offers preformatted layouts, drag-and-drop editing, image and font customization, and uploads for your own images. It suits beginners, creators, and small businesses that want to produce a polished header without advanced design software.

Many Canva assets are free, but some images and design elements are paid. Check each element for a premium marker before you build around it, and confirm the finished design can be downloaded without payment. Canva’s page includes an inconsistent FAQ dimension claim of 1500 × 1500 pixels; use X’s 1500 × 500 recommendation instead.
Adobe Express: useful for templates and resizing
Adobe Express’s Twitter header templates include free and premium options, as well as the option to start with a blank design. Its Twitter image resizing page describes a free plan with core editing features and thousands of free templates. This makes Express a practical choice for adapting an existing image or creating a business, event, or creator header.
Not every template, stock asset, or feature is included for free. Filter for free choices and check that export is available on your selected design before spending time editing it.
What became of the original five sites?
The source list was published on December 10, 2009, and last updated the following day. Its services were built around the customizable full-page Twitter backgrounds of that era. The source establishes what the article then claimed, but not whether those sites remain live, safe, free, or compatible with X today.

- Header/banner: 1500 × 500 pixels recommended.
- Profile image: 400 × 400 pixels recommended.
- Supported image formats: JPG, PNG, and GIF; animated GIFs are not supported for header or profile images.
These specifications come from X’s profile customization guidance. X also warns that header display can vary across devices and browsers; its upload guidance says approximately 60 pixels may be cropped from both the top and bottom. The profile image covers part of the lower-left area. Keep faces, logos, and essential text away from those vulnerable areas, especially the lower left. Adobe likewise recommends placing key information near the center in its header-size and safe-area guidance.
Make the header look professional
- Build around one idea. A clear image or visual theme is easier to understand than a canvas crowded with slogans and decoration.
- Keep type brief and legible. Use strong contrast, limit typefaces, and avoid small text that will be hard to read on a phone.
- Leave breathing room. Negative space helps the profile feel composed; do not fill every part of the banner.
- Keep branding consistent. Coordinate the banner’s colors with your profile image, website, or other recognizable brand elements.
- Preview different screen sizes. Check that the composition still makes sense when the edges are cropped and the avatar overlaps it.
- Check asset rights. A free download is not automatically cleared for commercial use. Review the license for stock images and template elements, including attribution requirements and restrictions involving people, logos, or trademarks.
Upload the finished image to X
- Sign in at X.com or open the official X app, then go to your profile.
- Select Edit profile.
- Select the header or banner image area and choose the camera icon.
- Choose Upload photo, select your static JPG or PNG, and adjust the crop if prompted.
- Select Save.
The exact labels and steps are described in X’s profile customization help. Upload the downloaded image directly rather than giving an old or unverified third-party site access to your account.

If X will not accept the upload
Start with the format and dimensions, then work through X’s upload checks:
- Use X.com or an official X application.
- Confirm the file is JPG, PNG, or GIF. For a header, use a static image; animated GIFs are not supported.
- Use the recommended header canvas of 1500 × 500 pixels.
- If the upload is for the profile image, check the separate 2 MB maximum stated in X’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Try an up-to-date browser or another browser if the upload stalls.
- After selecting the file, complete the crop and select Apply or Save when shown.

Protect your X account and your design
Do not enter your X password into an unverified site that promises to install a background, and do not grant broad account permissions just to add a banner. A safer workflow is to create and download the image from a design tool, then upload it through X’s own profile editor. If you previously authorized an old service, review connected apps in X’s account settings and revoke access you no longer need.
For a single header, a free template editor is usually enough; paid design software is more relevant if you need advanced compositing, print production, reusable brand systems, or team asset management.
