Good text design in 2026 balances visual character with readability and adjustability. Use expressive type to establish a product’s voice, but judge the result against practical reading needs and accessibility criteria—not trend appeal alone.

Start with contrast readers can check

WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3, Contrast (Minimum), sets Level AA contrast thresholds for text: at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. The criterion has exceptions, including incidental text and logotypes. These are conformance thresholds, not estimates of what most sites achieve.

Measure the actual foreground and background colors together. Check text in every relevant state, including links, hover and focus treatments, disabled controls where applicable, and text over images or changing backgrounds. A color pairing that passes in the default state may not pass after an interaction or behind a different part of an image.

Separate practical guidance from WCAG requirements

Digital.gov’s starting points

Digital.gov recommends an effective body-text size of at least 16px, while noting that the result depends on the font. It describes 45–75 characters per line as acceptable and about 66 as comfortable. Treat these as practical starting points, not universal legal minima: a typeface’s proportions, x-height, language, screen, and layout all affect how large or long a line feels.

WCAG 2.2 Level AAA visual presentation

The better-known rules about line length and spacing belong to WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.8, Visual Presentation, at Level AAA—not to the general Level AA text-contrast criterion. For a presentation that meets this criterion, users can access a layout with line widths no more than 80 characters or glyphs (40 for CJK text), no justified text, line spacing of at least 1.5 within paragraphs, and paragraph spacing of at least 1.5 times the line spacing. Text can also be resized to 200 percent without horizontal scrolling.

These are conditions for the AAA criterion, not blanket rules for every page or a substitute for testing actual content. In particular, do not describe 80 characters, 1.5 line spacing, or 200-percent resizing as Level AA requirements.

Design the type system at two scales

The U.S. Web Design System distinguishes microtypography—the styling and spacing of text within blocks—from macrotypography, the arrangement and hierarchy of text across a page. Its token-based typography system offers a useful way to make those decisions consistent rather than styling each heading or paragraph in isolation.

  • Within text blocks: choose a readable size, line height, paragraph spacing, alignment, and line measure. Avoid relying on justified text when designing for the WCAG 2.2 Level AAA visual-presentation criterion.
  • Across the page: create a clear type scale for headings, body copy, labels, and supporting text. Use spacing and hierarchy to show relationships, so readers can scan without mistaking decoration for structure.
  • Across components: use shared tokens or equivalent design-system values for recurring sizes and spacing. This helps keep forms, navigation, articles, and other interface areas coherent as the product evolves.

Consider variable fonts and expressive type in context

Variable fonts allow a font file to expose adjustable design axes. Microsoft Learn documents weight and optical-size axes in Segoe UI Variable; an axis can change a font’s design along that dimension. This makes variable fonts a tool for controlled typographic variation, not a requirement for a readable interface or a guarantee of better performance or legibility.

Creative Bloq’s “Breaking rules and bringing joy: top typography trends for 2026” highlights expressive, tactile or textured typography and variable fonts as design directions. That is editorial trend commentary, not a representative study of adoption or a prediction that these approaches suit every product. Use expressive treatments where they support the content and voice, and check that essential text remains legible against its background and at the size readers encounter it.

Compare type and layouts with a practical checklist

There is no source-backed ranking of particular typefaces here. Compare candidates in the context where they will actually appear:

  • Effective reading size: Is body copy comfortably readable in the chosen face and on the intended screen?
  • Contrast: Do the actual text and background colors meet the relevant WCAG threshold, including interactive states?
  • Line measure and spacing: Are lines and paragraphs easy to follow, rather than crowded or unusually long?
  • Resizing and reflow: Does the layout remain usable when readers enlarge text, and does content avoid horizontal scrolling where required?
  • Language and glyph coverage: Does the typeface support the scripts, characters, and symbols the product needs?
  • Visual voice: Does the typography suit the product without making readability depend on decorative treatment?

Test the finished design on its actual viewports, with real text, and with user resizing. A promising type specimen or desktop mockup cannot show by itself how the complete interface will read when its content, screen, or text size changes.
