Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Match the correction to the error: ease a slight mismatch while sewing, cautiously trim a block that is only marginally oversized, or add coping strips to an undersized block. Large errors may require resewing or replacing the block.
First, identify how the blocks differ
Measure the finished blocks and compare them with the size required by your pattern. The direction of the error matters as much as the amount.

Tip 1: Ease a small mismatch as you join the blocks
For a slight difference, place the smaller block on top and the larger block underneath. As you sew, the machine’s feed dogs move the lower layer forward and can ease in a small amount of extra fabric.
Keep the discrepancy genuinely small
Easing is a controlled adjustment, not a way to force mismatched blocks together. A one-inch difference is beyond what this method can handle. If the layers buckle, create tucks, or pull the seam out of alignment, stop and choose a different correction.

Pin and sew deliberately
- Align the corners and any important seam intersections first.
- Use pins or clips where the extra fabric needs to be distributed.
- Sew slowly, checking that the smaller block stays flat as it enters the needle.
- Press the joined unit only after confirming that the seam lies flat.
Tip 2: Trim a block that is only slightly oversized
If a block is approximately 1/16 to 1/8 inch too large, trimming may bring it to the required size. Measure from the actual seam lines and use the pattern’s intended finished dimensions rather than trimming by eye.
Protect points and seam allowance
Blocks with points reaching the edge require special care. Removing even a narrow sliver can cut into the seam allowance, blunt a point, or make that block look different from the rest of the quilt. Before cutting, verify that the trimmed edge will still leave a usable allowance for the next seam.

When not to trim
- Do not trim if reaching the target size would cut off an essential point.
- Do not trim away the allowance needed to join the block securely.
- Do not trim a substantially oversized block as though it were a tiny measurement error; resewing may preserve the design better.
Tip 3: Enlarge an undersized block with coping strips
A coping strip—also called a narrow border—adds fabric around an undersized block so it can match the required dimensions. Strips can surround the block or be placed on only one or two sides, depending on where the extra width or height is needed.
Make the added fabric look intentional
A similar background color can make the repair recede into the block. A contrasting fabric turns the correction into a visible design element and can help unify a scrappy group of blocks. Use the same fabric treatment consistently when several blocks need enlargement.

Fit the strip before final assembly
- Determine which dimension is short and which side or sides need added fabric.
- Cut strips wide enough to bring the unit to the pattern’s required size after sewing.
- Sew the strip or strips to the selected edge or edges.
- Press, then remeasure the enlarged block before joining it to neighboring blocks.
Check the cause before repairing more blocks
A sizing problem that appears repeatedly is often a process problem rather than a single bad seam. Recheck the quarter-inch seam allowance first. An allowance that is wider than intended can make finished blocks too small; an allowance that is narrower can make them too large.
Seam allowance is a common cause, but cutting and pressing can also change the finished dimensions. Confirm that pieces were cut accurately and that seams were pressed consistently before making a batch of corrective strips or trimming multiple blocks. This troubleshooting guidance comes from the American Patchwork & Quilting Editors’ June 14, 2021 article and its related April 5, 2021 podcast episode; it is not proof that every sizing error has the same cause.

When resewing or replacing is the better repair
If easing would distort the seam, trimming would destroy a point or the seam allowance, and coping strips would be conspicuous or structurally awkward, take the block apart and resew it if the fabric allows. When the construction cannot be corrected cleanly, making a replacement block may be the most reliable choice. The sources do not set an exact discard threshold, so base that decision on the block’s design, the amount of error, and whether the finished repair will match its neighbors.
