- 【Exquisite Quilt Cotton Balls】- Crafted from 100% cotton batting, our quilt cotton balls offer a natural softness and warmth that enhances the comfort of your quilts. The cotton is fluffy and resistant to tearing, making it ideal for quilting projects.
- 【Washing Instructions】- Avoid pre-washing the batting before quilting. After finishing your quilt, wash it in a large washing machine with cold water and a small amount of liquid soap. Tumble dry on low heat and then place the quilt in the sun to dry thoroughly. Initially, the batting may appear thin and less soft due to compression packaging. You can quilt at this stage or pat the batting to restore its fluffy and soft appearance.
- 【Dimensions】- Our cotton batting is available in multiple sizes: 47×59 inches, 59x79 inches, 71x79 inches, and 79x91 inches. These large sizes are perfect for crafting quilts, pot holders, wearable art, and other projects.
- 【High-quality Cotton Batting for Quilts】- Our dense cotton pads do not require disassembly and can be washed after quilting. This ensures that your bedding products have evenly distributed cotton, providing superior comfort and durability.
- 【Ease of Use】 - Our cotton batting is designed for easy cutting and layering. The flat and even texture allows you to cut it to your desired size without worrying about uneven tearing or poor distribution.

For the complete benchmark collection, see AllPeopleQuilt’s 53 Free Table Runner Patterns. The list below preserves its 53-project inventory while adding practical selection notes.
Before choosing a pattern: measure the table first
A beautiful runner can still be the wrong project if its finished dimensions do not suit the furniture. Measure the table’s usable length and width, then decide whether the runner will hang over the ends or sit entirely on the tabletop.
- For a lengthwise runner, a commonly used width is approximately one-third of the table’s width. This is a guideline, not a rule.
- A short end drop of about 6 inches on each end is common. Traditional table-treatment guidance also describes drops of approximately 6 to 12 inches per end.
- Use this formula: finished runner length = table length + twice the desired end drop.
- On a buffet or display table, a longer drop may work well. On a table where people sit, an overlong runner can catch on chairs, laps, children, or pets.
- A tabletop-only runner is often more practical on a kitchen island, narrow console, or table where end overhang is undesirable.
For additional sizing context, compare the guidance from the American Sewing Guild, the Sewing and Craft Alliance, and Spoonflower’s table-runner FAQ.
How to use the 53-pattern list
The skill labels are editorial descriptions based on the techniques named in the supplied pattern information. A beginner-leaning label generally means the design relies on rectangles, squares, straight seams, strip piecing, or a small quilt sandwich. It does not guarantee that the instructions will be error-free or that the project will be quick.

Finished sizes are included only where they were verified in the pattern information. Do not calculate a size from a photograph. Also check whether the listed size refers to a runner, table topper, wall hanging, or a set that includes place mats.
Beginner-friendly, quick, and precut-based patterns
These designs are the most approachable starting points when you want basic piecing, strips, squares, or a small quilt-as-you-go project. Designs involving on-point settings, flying geese, or precise angles may still require careful pressing and accurate quarter-inch seams.

Modern, geometric, and specialty-technique patterns
These projects are useful when the goal is to practice a particular technique rather than simply finish the fastest runner. Fussy cutting, curved appliqué, Flying Geese, on-point settings, hand piecing, and piping all add distinct preparation or accuracy requirements.

Jelly Rolls and 2½-inch strips
Start with Center Pieces, Table Wear, Strippy and Bright, or Batik Strips. Verify whether the pattern calls for precut strips, strips cut from yardage, or a precise count of strips. A Jelly Roll’s number of usable strips can vary after trimming and removing damaged or sewn ends.
Charm squares
Charming Floral is explicitly built around 5-inch charm squares and 2½-inch strips. Striking Skinny is another charm-square option. Check the cutting list before assuming that one charm pack supplies every background, border, or binding piece.

- 1. 4 Size Options: 47"x36" (1 Yard), 47"x72" (2 Yards), 47"x108" (3 Yards), 47"x144" (4 Yards) Available in four practical sizes to meet different project needs. Pre-cut and vacuum-packed for convenience, suitable for everything from small crafts to full-size quilts. Easy to handle and store during sewing or quilting workflows
- 2. 100% Natural Cotton Material – Safe and Breathable Crafted from unbleached, chemical-free cotton. This natural material is soft, low-irritation, and allows air to circulate easily, helping maintain comfort and insulation in handmade textile projects such as quilts, cushions, or bags
- 3. Lightweight, Breathable and Easy to Work With This batting fabric features a low-loft profile that is easy to cut, shape, and layer. The material is odorless and breathable, offering a balance of structure and softness. Supports both hand-sewing and machine quilting techniques
- 4. Versatile Application for DIY and Handmade Projects Can be used in quilting, sewing, stuffing, craft padding, potholders, placemats, bags, wall hangings, and more. Also compatible with crib size, twin size, and king size quilting formats, providing consistent texture and flexibility in use
- 5. Important Usage Note Due to vacuum packaging, the batting may appear compressed upon arrival. Allow at least 48 hours to regain full loft; gentle patting or shaking can help accelerate recovery. Do not pre-wash before quilting. Machine washable after quilting is completed
Fat quarters
Fat quarters are especially useful for projects with several coordinated colors. The separate Utah State University quilt-as-you-go runner uses four coordinating fat quarters and finishes at 15 × 43 inches. Its instructions also describe additional wedge pieces for lengthening the runner, making it a better resizing candidate than a pattern whose blocks do not repeat cleanly.
Scraps
Try Sunflower, Scrappy Table Runner, or floral and appliqué choices such as Appliquéd Vines and Leaves. Sort scraps by value and scale first. A busy collection can hide the block design, while fabrics with similar values may eliminate the contrast that makes a star, geese, or flower visible.

Panels and large-scale prints
Big Block Table Runner is the clearest large-print choice in the list. On-Point uses a fussy-cut panel and 4½-inch strips. Measure the usable motif, including any selvage or directional border, before purchasing fabric.
Seasonal and style guide
For spring and floral decorating, look at Sunflower, Petal Pushers, Ring of Posies, Rose Bouquet, Floral Pastel, Flower Lineup, Appliquéd Vines and Leaves, and Easy Floral.
For summer, beach, or patriotic settings, consider Fiesta Pinwheels!, Ride the Wave, Summer Sea Glass, Star-Spangled Summer, and Beach Umbrella.
For fall or Thanksgiving, use Love for Autumn, Autumn Splendor, Bright Spark, or Scrappy Table Runner. For a neutral or year-round setting, try Built-to-Order, All-Season Runner, Big Block, Mix-It-Up, or Cool Four-Patch.
For Christmas, Hanukkah, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, candy-corn, gnome, and other holiday-specific projects, the SewCanShe seasonal collection is a useful supplement. Its count is not directly comparable with the AllPeopleQuilt list because it includes reversible, no-sew, appliqué, video-led, and other tutorial formats.
What does free mean here?
The 53-project benchmark is a collection of free pattern links from AllPeopleQuilt, but free access is not one uniform format. In this article, a free pattern can mean:
- Written instructions on the creator’s site.
- A downloadable or printable PDF.
- A free pattern page where an account may be optional or required.
- A video tutorial, when video is the primary current instruction.
- A tutorial that makes a runner but is more accurately a topper, wall hanging, no-sew project, or placemat set.
The official AllPeopleQuilt links above are the safest starting points for this particular 53-pattern inventory. The Missouri Star free table-runner collection is another useful searchable source organized by fabric cut, skill level, and project type. Missouri Star describes its offerings as free PDFs, but saving patterns to its digital library requires a free account. That is different from an openly downloadable PDF.
Other broad collections include AppleGreenCottage’s 30-plus patterns, SewingSupport’s 150-plus links, and AllFreeSewing’s table-runner projects. Their totals should not be compared as if every entry were the same kind of quilt pattern.

Fabric preparation before cutting
There is no single universal prewashing rule among quilters. One sewing-extension project recommends washing fabric before cutting to remove excess dye and reduce later shrinkage. Some quilters do not prewash, particularly when working with precuts that may fray. Choose a method and apply it consistently to the top fabrics, backing, and other washable components.
- Test saturated colors. Red, navy, black, and bright batiks deserve a bleeding test before they are paired with white or pale fabric.
- Consider shrinkage. If the runner will be washed regularly, prewashing the backing but not the top can produce uneven shrinkage after finishing.
- Press before measuring. Folded, wrinkled, or distorted fabric can make the cutting plan inaccurate.
- Protect directional motifs. Mark the orientation of stripes, plaids, panels, and one-way prints before cutting.
- Account for fraying precuts. Charm squares and strip precuts may need careful handling and should not automatically be assumed to have the same usable dimensions as freshly cut yardage.
See the USU Extension easy table-runner project, AllPeopleQuilt’s prewashing guidance, and the Sewing and Craft Alliance fabric-preparation guide for the reasoning behind these choices.
How to finish a quilted table runner
- Make the top. Piece or appliqué the design, pressing seams according to the pattern directions. Measure the completed top rather than relying only on the planned dimensions.
- Prepare the backing and batting. Both should be larger than the top according to the pattern’s instructions. The Center Pieces example specifies 2¼ yards of backing and batting measuring 28 × 80 inches for its 20 × 72-inch finished runner.
- Baste the quilt sandwich. Smooth the backing, batting, and top before pinning, spray basting, or hand basting. Small runners are easier to manage than bed quilts, but they can still ripple if the layers are not flat.
- Quilt. Straight-line machine quilting, walking-foot quilting, free-motion quilting, and hand quilting are all possible. Avoid adding an overly dense design to a small runner unless the batting and pattern permit it; excessive quilting can stiffen the runner or cause puckering.
- Trim square. Trim only after quilting and check that opposite edges are parallel. A cutting mat, long ruler, and careful measurement help prevent a skewed binding.
- Bind or finish the edge. Follow the pattern’s binding width and attachment method. For a general binding calculation, measure the finished perimeter and add extra length for joining and corners. The USU Extension binding guide explains double-fold binding construction and the allowance needed beyond the perimeter.
- Wash and dry appropriately. Follow the fabric and batting care instructions. A color-catcher or similar precaution can be sensible when dark or highly saturated fabrics are present.
Important safety note: a decorative runner is not a hot pad
Do not describe an ordinary quilted table runner as heatproof. Standard batting primarily supplies loft and quilting structure. It is not automatically designed to protect a table from a hot pan or casserole.
The Warm Company’s Insul-Bright information describes the material as resisting heat conduction and reflecting radiant heat, but also states that it is not microwave-safe and recommends cotton batting with it for additional protection around high-heat items. Even an insulated construction should not be treated as a universal substitute for a purpose-built, tested trivet or hot pad. Put a hot dish on a suitable heat-protection product, not directly on a decorative runner.

- The PDF link is broken: return to the creator’s landing page and look for Instructions, Download, Project, or Printable. Older files, such as the Pastel PDF, may move even when the pattern title remains searchable.
- The site requires an account: decide whether creating a free account is acceptable, or choose an openly available web tutorial or PDF instead. Do not call an account-gated download one-click printable.
- The finished runner is too short: do not add random borders or blocks until you have checked whether the design is modular. Add units only when the repeat and seam allowances make the extension mathematically safe. The USU quilt-as-you-go pattern explicitly describes additional wedge pieces for lengthening.
- The runner is too wide: reducing blocks or borders changes the binding, backing, and possibly the pattern’s proportions. Recalculate before cutting.
- The fabric collection is discontinued: substitute by color value, contrast, scale, and directional qualities rather than trying to find the exact old collection.
- Directional fabric is upside down: mark the top of every cut piece and plan whether the motifs should run along the length or across the width.
- Points do not match: check the quarter-inch seam, press consistently, starch only if compatible with your process, and trim units to the specified unfinished size before assembly.
- The runner puckers: rebaste or reduce quilting density, check thread tension, and make sure the backing was smooth and adequately supported.
- The runner interferes with seating: reduce the end drop or use a tabletop-only length. A buffet runner can tolerate more overhang than one used while people eat.
Questions readers often ask
How long should a table runner be?
Measure the table and add twice the desired end drop. A 6-inch drop at each end is common, while 6 to 12 inches is another traditional range. Use less or no drop where chairs, laps, children, or pets make overhang inconvenient.
How wide should a table runner be?
Approximately one-third of the table width is a frequently used starting point. Narrow runners work well on consoles and narrow tables; wide dining tables may need a broader design so the runner does not look visually lost. Make sure there is still room for plates and glassware.
Do I need batting?
Use batting when you want a quilted, padded runner or plan to quilt the layers together. A reversible or whole-cloth project may use a different construction. Follow the selected pattern rather than substituting batting without checking how the edge finish and quilting will work.
Can I make any of these patterns longer?
Not safely without checking the block repeat, borders, and cutting instructions. Modular strip or block designs may be extendable, but an appliquéd centerpiece, panel, or carefully proportioned composition may not be. Use a pattern that explicitly supports extensions when length is uncertain.
Can I use scraps, fat quarters, or precuts?
Yes, but match the fabric format to the cutting list. The strongest matches in this collection include Center Pieces, Table Wear, Strippy and Bright, and Batik Strips for 2½-inch strips; Charming Floral and Striking Skinny for charm squares; Sunflower and Scrappy Table Runner for scraps; and Big Block or On-Point for large motifs and panels.
Are all 53 patterns printable PDFs?
No. The list links to official pattern pages, and access formats vary. Some pages may provide a printable file, while others may present web instructions or a download button. The Pastel Table Runner is linked directly to a PDF in the supplied inventory. Missouri Star’s separate collection may require a free account to save patterns to its digital library.
Should I prewash quilting cotton?
It is a choice rather than a universal requirement. Washing can remove excess dye and reduce later shrinkage; some quilters avoid it, especially with fraying precuts. Test bleeding and use the same policy for the top, backing, and other washable components.

Can a quilted table runner protect a table from hot cookware?
Assume no unless the pattern uses a purpose-designed insulated construction and the manufacturer’s directions support the intended use. Ordinary batting is not a heatproof barrier, and even Insul-Bright is not microwave-safe. Use a tested trivet or hot pad for hot cookware.
What is the difference between a table runner and a table topper?
A runner is generally a long, narrow textile designed to run along the table. A topper is usually shorter, wider, or centered on the tabletop. In this collection, Avian Table Topper is labeled as a topper rather than silently presented as a conventional dining-table runner. Some runner designs, including Gold Standard, can also be displayed as wall décor.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free table runner pattern for a beginner?
Choose a design based on straight seams, rectangles, squares, strip piecing, or quilt-as-you-go construction. Table Wear, Big Block, Easy Floral, Cool Four-Patch, and Charming Floral are reasonable beginner-leaning starting points based on their described construction. Read the full cutting list before beginning.
Which free table runner patterns use Jelly Rolls?
Center Pieces, Table Wear, Strippy and Bright, and Batik Strips are the clearest 2½-inch strip options in this collection. Confirm the required strip count and whether the pattern uses strips cut from yardage or a precut pack.
How do I calculate the finished length of a table runner?
Use finished runner length = table length + twice the desired end drop. About 6 inches per end is common; 6 to 12 inches is another traditional range. Use a shorter tabletop-only design when overhang could interfere with seating.
Are free table runner patterns safe to use under hot pans?
Do not assume so. A standard quilted runner is decorative, not automatically heatproof. Use a purpose-built trivet or hot pad, and follow the manufacturer instructions for any insulated material such as Insul-Bright.
Can I lengthen a free table runner pattern?
Only after checking whether the design has a repeatable block or strip structure. Some projects explicitly support extensions, such as the USU quilt-as-you-go runner with additional wedge pieces. Do not add units to a panel or centerpiece design without recalculating proportions and yardage.
The Bottom Line
The best free table runner pattern is the one whose finished dimensions, construction, and fabric requirements match your table and your stash. Begin with the measurement formula, then choose among the 53 linked designs by technique: strips for a direct start, charm squares for precuts, scraps for flexible color, appliqué for decorative motifs, and Flying Geese, stars, triangles, or hand piecing for a more technical challenge. Check the original instructions for the final size, yardage, access format, and care instructions before making the first cut.
