Make your own outdoor Christmas decorations with materials ranging from tomato cages and pallet boards to evergreen branches, paper bags, and ice. These eight ideas are sized for porches, walkways, fences, lawns, railings, and entry areas, with clear choices for both non-electric and illuminated displays.

These eight DIY outdoor Christmas decorations cover nearly every kind of display space: a small porch, a walkway, a fence, a lawn, a railing, or a covered entry. Some use no electricity at all, while others use outdoor-rated lights or battery-operated LEDs. Choose a project according to your climate, available space, and comfort with tools—and treat every outdoor decoration as temporary rather than assuming it will withstand severe weather.

Upside-down tomato cages make surprisingly convincing cone-shaped Christmas trees with very little construction. They are especially useful when you want a coordinated group of small trees rather than one large centerpiece.

Materials

  • Upside-down tomato cages
  • Artificial garland
  • Outdoor-rated string lights, if desired
  • Ribbon and lightweight ornaments
  • Landscape pins
  • Hammer

How to make them

  1. Turn each tomato cage upside down so its prongs form the top of the tree.
  2. Wrap artificial garland around the cage, securing it as needed so it does not sag or unravel.
  3. Add outdoor Christmas lights if you want an illuminated version. Keep the light strand positioned so the plug and connections stay out of standing water.
  4. Finish with ribbon and lightweight ornaments.
  5. Use landscape pins to secure the base or garland, particularly if the trees will sit in a windy yard or near steps.

For a fuller porch display, group three cages at different heights. Avoid heavy ornaments: they can pull down the garland or make a narrow cage unstable. Artificial garland is the more predictable choice in wet climates; fresh greenery will dry and shed over time.

2. Pallet-Wood Christmas Tree

Best for: A farmhouse-style porch, fence, garage wall, or covered entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A pallet-wood tree is a good choice when you want a painted or stained decoration that can be customized to match the exterior of your home. It is also one of the better projects for using leftover boards, provided the wood is suitable for reuse.

Materials

  • Pallet boards
  • A two-by-four or other sturdy central backer
  • Sandpaper
  • Exterior-appropriate paint or stain
  • Exterior-suitable screws or nails
  • Gloves
  • Burlap, twine, and lightweight ornaments

How to make it

  1. Inspect the pallet boards and discard pieces with rot, severe splitting, chemical contamination, or questionable treatment markings.
  2. Cut the boards into progressively shorter lengths, with the longest piece at the bottom and the shortest at the top.
  3. Sand splinters and sharp corners.
  4. Lay the boards out in a tree shape and attach them to a central trunk or backer.
  5. Add a base or stand wide enough to support the finished decoration, then paint or stain it with a coating intended for the conditions where it will be displayed.
  6. Add a simple star, burlap, twine, or lightweight ornaments.

Secure a tall, narrow tree to a firm wall, fence, or other suitable support rather than leaving it freestanding in strong wind. Even exterior paint or stain cannot make unsuitable pallet wood permanently weatherproof, so place the tree under cover when possible and protect it from prolonged moisture.

3. Evergreen Stars

Best for: Doors, porch walls, fences, railings, and covered outdoor areas.

Evergreen stars provide a natural alternative to plastic decorations and can be made in several sizes. Cedar, juniper, spruce, and boxwood are possible choices, but greenery longevity depends on the plant, temperature, moisture, and amount of sun.

Materials

  • Thin wooden strips or garden wire for the star frame
  • Cedar, juniper, spruce, boxwood, or other suitable evergreen cuttings
  • Floral wire
  • Pruning shears
  • An outdoor-rated hook, tie, or other hanging method

How to make them

  1. Build a simple eight-point star from thin wooden strips or another rigid base.
  2. Trim evergreen pieces into manageable sections.
  3. Overlap the cuttings around the frame and secure them with floral wire.
  4. Hang the finished star from a sound support, or make several in different sizes for a group display.

Cedar is commonly used for outdoor greenery because it can tolerate wintry conditions, but no cutting should be expected to remain fresh for an entire season in every climate. Rosemary and other tender plants may be better suited to indoor or sheltered conditions in cold weather. Remove the star when the branches become brittle or shed heavily.

4. Paper-Bag LED Luminarias

Best for: Walkways, steps, driveways, and the perimeter of a porch.

Paper-bag luminarias create a simple star or snowflake pattern without running electrical cords across a walkway. They are inexpensive and quick to make, but they are also among the most weather-sensitive decorations in this list.

Materials

How to make them

  1. Keep each paper bag folded while punching or cutting a star or snowflake through several layers.
  2. Open the bag and place a battery-operated LED tea light inside.
  3. Add a small amount of sand or filler only if the bag needs additional stability.
  4. Set the luminarias beside—not across—the walking path, leaving steps and door swings clear.

Paper can become soggy, tear in wind, or blow into plants and traffic areas. Put these out only during suitable weather and remove them if rain or strong wind is expected. Do not substitute an open candle for the LED unless the container and location are specifically appropriate for flame use and the display can be continuously supervised.

5. Shooting-Star Light Sculpture

Best for: A front lawn, large shrub, fence line, or the side of a house.

This display turns a rigid star into a larger illuminated feature by extending several light strands downward as a shooting tail. It works best where there is enough open space to keep the tail away from people, vehicles, landscaping equipment, and doorways.

Materials

  • A rigid metal star frame
  • Outdoor-rated string lights
  • Light-duty wire or clips approved for the light set
  • Ground stakes or another secure support system

How to make it

  1. Wrap the star frame with an outdoor-rated light strand.
  2. Extend several additional strands below the star to form the tail.
  3. Arrange the strands so they do not cross a walkway or create a loop that can catch a foot.
  4. Anchor the star and tail to firm supports. Check that wind cannot swing the structure into a window, siding, shrub, or person.

Use only light strings marked for outdoor use. Outdoor electrical decorations should be connected to a GFCI-protected receptacle, and the light set should be fastened without puncturing or crushing its cord insulation. A large light sculpture is not a good candidate for a temporary indoor extension cord run through a window.

Large ribbon-candy ornaments add a sculptural, almost whimsical element to an entry display. This project involves metal flashing and drilling, so it requires more care than the greenery and tomato-cage ideas.

Materials

  • Thin metal flashing or another weather-suitable sheet material
  • Threaded rods
  • Wooden beads
  • A wooden block or backing
  • Screws and a drill
  • Outdoor-rated tape
  • Work gloves

How to make them

  1. Cut strips of flashing and bend or weave them into oversized ribbon-candy shapes.
  2. Use threaded rods, beads, spacers, and a backing block to create and hold the folds.
  3. Drill and fasten the connections securely.
  4. Cover, fold, or smooth exposed edges before handling or hanging the ornament.
  5. Place the finished decoration where it will not scrape siding, strike a passerby, or fall into a walking area.

Flashing can have extremely sharp edges and can become hot in direct sun. Wear gloves during construction, and do not rely on tape alone to cover a dangerous edge or support a heavy ornament. A covered entry is preferable to an exposed location subject to strong gusts.

7. Ice Mushroom Lights

Best for: Reliably freezing climates and short-term winter displays.

Ice mushrooms are temporary illuminated sculptures made by freezing water in bowls and cups. They are atmospheric, but they are practical only where temperatures will remain below freezing long enough for the forms to hold their shape.

Materials

  • Bowls and cups
  • Water
  • A freezer or reliably freezing outdoor temperatures
  • Gloves
  • A boring bit and scrap wood for a stable drilling setup
  • Battery-operated LED tea lights

How to make them

  1. Fill bowls and cups with water, leaving room for expansion as the water freezes.
  2. Freeze the forms until solid.
  3. Release the ice from the containers.
  4. Drill a central opening through the cup-shaped pieces, using appropriate protection and care.
  5. Stack the forms outdoors to create mushroom-like sculptures, then place an LED tea light inside each opening.

Do not treat this as an all-season decoration. Wear gloves, keep the sculptures away from walkways where melting could create a slip hazard, and avoid drilling unstable ice without a secure setup. Use battery-operated LEDs rather than flame.

An evergreen swag is one of the lowest-cost options if you have access to usable Christmas-tree trimmings or branches. A triangular section can be decorated as a hanging mini-tree, while a longer bundle works as a traditional doorway or railing swag.

Materials

  • Evergreen branches or Christmas-tree trimmings
  • Floral wire
  • Bells or lightweight ornaments
  • Ribbon
  • A weather-suitable hook, tie, or hanging method

How to make it

  1. Choose a triangular branch section or several coordinated cuttings.
  2. Secure the branches together with floral wire.
  3. For a mini-tree effect, invert a triangular clipping so the narrow end points downward or upward according to the shape you want.
  4. Add clusters of bells or lightweight ornaments and finish with a large bow.
  5. Attach it to a sound hook, railing, mailbox post, or covered doorway.

Fresh greenery dries over time. Keep it away from heat sources, open flames, and hot electrical equipment, and remove it when it becomes brittle or sheds heavily. If the display will be exposed to frequent rain, artificial garland may be a more durable adaptation.

Compact Shopping List

You do not need one particular brand or model for any of these projects. Hardware stores, garden centers, craft retailers, and online marketplaces commonly carry the basic materials. For electrical products, prioritize the correct safety marking and intended use over appearance or price.

  • Lighting: outdoor-rated string lights, battery-operated LED tea lights, and replacement batteries.
  • Power and protection: an outdoor-rated extension cord when one is genuinely needed, plus access to a GFCI-protected receptacle.
  • Structures: tomato cages, landscape pins, pallet boards, a two-by-four backer, stakes, screws, and a drill.
  • Greenery: artificial garland, fresh evergreen cuttings, floral wire, pruning shears, ribbon, and lightweight ornaments.
  • Finishing supplies: exterior paint or stain, sandpaper, burlap, twine, wooden beads, paper bags, and outdoor-suitable hooks or ties.

For the tomato-cage trees, tomato cages and landscape pins are the key structural purchases. For stars, swags, and garland, floral wire and artificial garland can serve several projects. If you are powering lights, choose an outdoor-rated extension cord whose rating matches the intended electrical load rather than using an indoor cord outside.

Outdoor Christmas Decoration Safety Checklist

  • Confirm the rating: Use lights and electrical decorations specifically marked for outdoor use. Look for the product’s safety-label information and testing-laboratory mark; indoor-rated lights should not be installed outdoors.
  • Inspect before installation: Check every light string, plug, socket, and extension cord for frayed wires, cracked sockets, bare conductors, loose connections, or other damage. Discard damaged sets rather than improvising repairs.
  • Use GFCI protection: Plug outdoor lights and electrical decorations into GFCI-protected receptacles. Use an outdoor-rated extension cord when necessary and match its load rating to the decoration.
  • Avoid overloads: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not overload outlets or power strips, and observe the manufacturer’s limit for connecting incandescent light strings together.
  • Anchor the display: Fasten lights, tomato cages, pallet trees, star frames, and other tall pieces to firm supports. Wind can turn an unstable decoration into a falling or trip hazard.
  • Protect the cords: Arrange cords away from foot traffic and do not staple, nail, pinch, or bend them in ways that can damage their insulation.
  • Switch everything off: Turn off powered decorations when leaving home or going to bed. Timers can help, but confirm that the timer itself is suitable for the location and load.
  • Separate combustibles from heat: Keep paper, dried greenery, fabric, wood, and ribbon away from open flames, heaters, and hot electrical equipment.
  • Watch the forecast: Remove paper luminarias, ice displays, fresh greenery, and unstable lightweight decorations when rain, thawing, or high winds make them unsafe.

The easiest starting point is a group of tomato-cage trees or a branch swag. If you want a painted focal point, build the pallet tree; if you want light without extension cords, use LED luminarias or ice mushrooms. Whatever you make, size the decoration to its location, anchor it properly, and take it down when weather or material deterioration makes the display unsafe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest DIY outdoor Christmas decoration?

The tomato-cage Christmas tree is the easiest project. Turn a tomato cage upside down, wrap it with artificial garland, and add ribbon, lightweight ornaments, and optional outdoor-rated lights. Secure it with landscape pins so it cannot tip or blow away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I safely use homemade Christmas decorations with outdoor lights?

Yes, but use only lights specifically marked for outdoor use, inspect them for damage, connect them to GFCI-protected receptacles, avoid overloaded outlets, anchor the display, and turn the lights off when you leave home or go to bed.

How long will fresh evergreen decorations last outdoors?

Fresh greenery works well for short-term swags and stars, but it dries and becomes brittle. Remove it when it sheds heavily or feels dry, and keep it away from open flames, heaters, and hot electrical equipment.

The Bottom Line

Best overall for beginners: tomato-cage trees. Best no-power options: evergreen stars, branch swags, and the pallet-wood tree. Best illuminated options: paper-bag LED luminarias for paths and a shooting-star sculpture for larger yards. Outdoor ratings, GFCI protection, inspection, anchoring, and switching lights off when unattended matter more than choosing a particular brand or style.
