Photoshop is still one of the most useful digital-painting tools for artists who need layered files, custom brushes, masks, photo references, texture work, or print-ready exports. The official desktop version is not permanently free: Adobe currently offers a 7-day trial, after which the selected Creative Cloud plan becomes paid unless you cancel.
This guide covers the legitimate download route, what Creative Cloud actually does, current requirements, cancellation, and the installation problems most likely to interrupt a painting workflow.
Is Photoshop free to download?
You can download and use the full desktop version of Photoshop free for seven days. The trial includes the current features and updates, but Adobe requires a payment method when you sign up. At the end of the seven-day period, Adobe automatically starts billing the plan you selected unless you cancel first.
Adobe allows one seven-day Photoshop trial per person. There is no current 30-day desktop trial and no legitimate way to keep the subscription version permanently free. Photoshop’s mobile apps can be downloaded without paying, but premium features require a subscription and the mobile apps are not a replacement for the full desktop painting environment.

How to start the Photoshop free trial
- Open Adobe’s Photoshop Free Trial page.
- Select Start free trial.
- Choose the appropriate category: For Individuals, For Students and Teachers, or For Teams and Businesses.
- Choose a plan and billing option. Read whether it is monthly or annual, paid monthly.
- Sign in to an Adobe account or create one.
- Enter your payment information.
- Select Agree and subscribe.
- Select Get Started to begin the download.
- In the Creative Cloud desktop app, find Photoshop and select Download.
The trial itself costs nothing, but the payment details are used for the subscription that follows it. Put a reminder in your calendar for the sixth day rather than waiting until the last few hours. That gives you time to cancel if Photoshop does not suit your tablet, computer, or painting workflow.
Installing Photoshop through Adobe Home
If you are starting from a new computer, you can install Photoshop from Adobe Home:
- Sign in to the Adobe Home website.
- Open the Apps tab.
- Find Photoshop.
- Select Download.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
Adobe installs the Creative Cloud desktop app if it is not already present. Creative Cloud then downloads, installs, updates, and licenses Photoshop. It is the installer and account-management system—not a separate free version of Photoshop.

Installing Photoshop when Creative Cloud is already installed
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Select the Apps tab.
- Find Photoshop in the list.
- Select Install.
Photoshop normally opens automatically when installation finishes. You can also launch it later from the Windows Start menu, macOS Applications folder, or the Creative Cloud app.
Installing Creative Cloud itself
If the Creative Cloud desktop app is missing, use Adobe’s Creative Cloud download page. The download should start automatically. If it does not, select Restart download.

Adobe installs the Creative Cloud desktop app only in its default location. The installer does not offer a choice of another folder or drive for the app itself. Adobe also provides direct installers: on Windows, extract the downloaded archive and run Set-up.exe; on macOS, extract the download and double-click Install.
What “with Creative Cloud” means
Creative Cloud is Adobe’s subscription, download, update, and licensing system. It does not give you a perpetual Photoshop license. You need an active plan to continue using the current desktop application after the trial.
The individual Photoshop plan currently includes:
- Photoshop for desktop, web, and mobile
- Adobe Express Premium
- 100 GB of cloud storage
- 25 monthly generative credits
Adobe currently lists the individual plan at US$22.99 per month after the trial when billed annually and paid monthly. Prices, taxes, regional currencies, and promotions can change, so the amount shown on Adobe’s checkout screen is the one that controls your purchase.
If you also use Illustrator, Premiere, or other Adobe applications, Creative Cloud Pro is the broader option. Adobe currently describes it as including more than 20 apps, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere. For someone who only needs Photoshop for painting, the individual Photoshop plan is the more focused choice.
How to cancel before being charged
For a subscription purchased directly from Adobe, cancel it from your account rather than uninstalling Photoshop. Removing the application does not cancel billing.

- Find the relevant plan and select Manage plan.
- Select Cancel your plan.
- Select Continue to cancel.
- Choose a cancellation reason.
- Select Continue.
- Review the cancellation details.
- Select Confirm cancellation.
- Look for Adobe’s confirmation email or check that the plan status has changed in your account.
If you bought the subscription through Apple, Google, Microsoft, or another reseller, cancel through that provider instead. Adobe’s trial information says you can cancel during the seven-day period to avoid the charge.

If you miss the trial deadline, check your eligibility promptly. For a US annual plan paid monthly, canceling more than 14 days after the initial purchase can result in an early-termination fee equal to 50% of the remaining contract balance.
Can your computer run Photoshop?
For Photoshop version 27.x and later, Adobe currently lists these minimum desktop requirements:

Photoshop cannot be installed on a macOS volume using a case-sensitive file system. The Creative Cloud desktop app has separate requirements: Windows 10 64-bit version 1903 or later, or macOS Monterey 12 or later.
These are minimums rather than comfortable painting specifications. Large canvases, many layers, high-resolution brush tips, and generative tools can use considerably more memory and scratch-disk space. If Photoshop feels slow, leave more free space on the drive used for scratch disks and reduce the number of large documents open at once.

Common download and licensing problems
The installation is stuck
Adobe lists weak Wi-Fi, antivirus software, software firewalls, corporate firewalls, and proxy servers as common causes. Try a wired connection where possible, allow Creative Cloud through the firewall, and temporarily check whether security software is blocking the installer. On a managed work or school computer, the organization’s IT department may need to approve the download.
Creative Cloud will not open
Quit Creative Cloud and close other Adobe applications, restart the computer, and open Creative Cloud again. If it remains stuck on launch, Adobe recommends using the Creative Cloud uninstaller and reinstalling the desktop app. Do not remove synchronized files casually; check that cloud files are fully synchronized first.
Photoshop still says “Trial” after purchase
Adobe says a purchase can take up to one hour to process. During that time, Photoshop may continue to display trial or free-membership prompts. If the plan has expired or the payment failed, sign in to your Adobe account and select Change payment when prompted.
A blank white screen appears after signing in
This can happen when the account is signed in on more than two devices or when Adobe licensing certificates are invalid. In Creative Cloud, select the Account icon in the upper-right corner, choose Sign out, and sign in again. Adobe also provides certificate-removal instructions for Windows Certificate Manager and macOS Keychain Access if signing out does not resolve it.

The device limit has been reached
An Adobe account can be signed in on up to two computers, but Adobe applications can be actively used on only one computer at a time. Account sharing is not permitted. To free a slot, sign out of an old computer from the Adobe account or Creative Cloud installation when that option is offered.

Creative Cloud will not uninstall
Adobe requires all Creative Cloud applications, including Photoshop, to be uninstalled before the Creative Cloud desktop app can be removed. Confirm that files have synchronized first, because unsynchronized files may be lost.
What happens to your painting files if you cancel?
Canceling the subscription does not turn installed Photoshop into a permanent free editor. After access ends, the desktop application requires an active plan. Save important work locally in formats you can open elsewhere, such as PSD, TIFF, PNG, or JPEG, and export flattened copies when appropriate.
Before canceling, also download any cloud-stored documents, brushes, or assets you need. A local backup is especially important for working artists: an installation problem or an expired plan should not be the only place your master files exist.

How long is the Photoshop free trial?
Adobe’s current Photoshop desktop trial lasts seven days and includes the full application. It requires a payment method and automatically changes to a paid plan unless canceled before the trial ends.
Can I install Photoshop without Creative Cloud?
Creative Cloud manages the normal Photoshop download, installation, updates, and licensing. Adobe provides direct Creative Cloud installers, but the current desktop Photoshop subscription still relies on Adobe’s licensing system.
Does uninstalling Photoshop cancel the subscription?
No. Uninstalling Photoshop or Creative Cloud does not cancel billing. For a direct Adobe purchase, use Adobe account > Manage plan > Cancel your plan. Purchases through Apple, Google, Microsoft, or another provider must be canceled there.
Can I use Photoshop on two computers?
