Canva’s Affinity relaunch turns the former Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher workflows into one professional design application. The new Affinity combines vector design, photo editing, and page layout in a single workspace—and Canva presents the core app as free for everyone.
That makes this more significant than a simple price reduction. Affinity is now positioned as a free, high-control desktop design tool, while Canva adds an optional ecosystem around it: Canva Brand System connectivity, Canva AI features for eligible premium accounts, and integrations aimed at professional production workflows.

The practical takeaway is straightforward: freelancers, illustrators, photographers, publishers, students, educators, and nonprofits can evaluate a serious alternative to subscription-based creative software without paying for Affinity itself. But anyone migrating an established Adobe-centered workflow should still test representative files, fonts, effects, plugins, and exports before switching production work.
Affinity is free—but Canva AI is a separate consideration
Canva announced the all-new Affinity on October 29, 2025, and describes the application as completely free. The launch materials do not describe a stripped-down free tier for the core Affinity app. Canva’s current pricing information places Affinity access under Canva Free.
That does not mean every Canva feature is free inside Affinity. The main paid boundary described by Canva is Canva AI Studio. Users with an eligible Canva premium account can access features such as:
- Generative Fill
- Expand & Edit
- Remove Background
These are optional AI accelerators layered onto Affinity’s editing tools. You do not need Canva Pro merely to use Affinity’s core vector, photo, and layout capabilities. A premium Canva account may also affect access to Canva-specific content, collaboration features, storage, usage allowances, and organization controls. Those entitlements can change, so check the current plan details before purchasing or upgrading.
What the all-in-one Affinity app can do
Affinity’s three main work modes are Vector, Photo, and Layout. Bringing them together reduces the need to move a project among separate applications when the job involves several types of design work.

Those are Canva’s described capabilities, not independent benchmark results. The available information does not establish that Affinity is faster than Adobe, Corel, Figma, Capture One, or any other competing product. Claims that it is an “Adobe killer” would go beyond the evidence.

Platforms and file compatibility
At launch, Canva listed Affinity as available for Mac and Windows, with iPad described as coming soon. Tablet availability is a moving detail, so check the current Affinity download page before planning an iPad-based workflow.
Canva also lists support for several widely used formats, including:
- PSD
- AI
- SVG
- TIFF
- IDML
This is important for existing designers because it means Affinity is designed to accept and exchange work from multiple creative applications. It does not guarantee perfect conversion or round-tripping. A file may depend on fonts, plugins, effects, linked assets, transparency behavior, color settings, or application-specific features that do not translate identically.
A safer migration test
- Choose several real projects rather than a simple test document.
- Include layered PSD or AI files, multipage PDFs, placed images, custom fonts, and any files with effects or masks.
- Open the originals in Affinity and inspect typography, clipping paths, blend modes, gradients, transparency, color, and page dimensions.
- Export the converted files to the formats your clients, printer, publisher, or collaborators require.
- Compare the exports at 100% zoom and, for print work, request a proof before moving the entire workflow.
- Keep the original files and your previous software available until the new process has survived a complete project.
Compatibility support is a reason to test Affinity—not a reason to assume that every production file will open flawlessly.
How Canva’s ecosystem fits around Affinity
Canva’s ownership of Affinity gives the app a connection to Canva’s broader design and publishing ecosystem. Canva announced its Affinity acquisition on March 26, 2024, describing Affinity as a professional design software company whose tools were trusted by more than three million creative professionals at that time.
The likely strategic direction is clear, although it is an interpretation rather than a statement that Canva has formally described in those exact terms: Affinity handles precision-heavy professional creation, while Canva supplies browser-based collaboration, brand governance, publishing, and distribution. The following integrations illustrate that direction.
Brand System connectivity
Canva’s 2026 Canva Create announcement describes Brand System functionality inside Affinity. Designers can create brand elements—including photographs and logos—in Affinity and publish them into a Canva Brand Kit.

Canva also announced an Affinity AI Connector with Claude. According to Canva, users can describe a process and have Claude build and save a reusable script in Affinity’s Scripting panel. The examples include batch image editing, print preparation, and bulk color adjustments.
For production teams, this could be more useful than a one-off generative feature: a repeatable script can reduce manual work across many files. However, it should be treated as an announced integration, not proof that every script will be correct, safe, or available in every account. Review generated code, test it on copies, and maintain a manual fallback for client work.
Readers exploring this route can investigate Claude for Affinity scripting as an automation workflow, but the integration is not presented here as a confirmed commercial recommendation or affiliate offer.
Capture One and DaVinci Resolve workflows
Canva says Capture One and DaVinci Resolve support Affinity’s native .af file type. That creates a potentially useful route for photographers and video editors moving assets between photo editing, design, and finishing applications.

Before adopting the workflow, test the assets that matter to you: layered images, masks, color adjustments, alpha channels, typography, and any handoff required by your finishing process. The relevant comparison is an Affinity Capture One workflow or Affinity DaVinci Resolve workflow, not a promise that the applications behave as one seamless suite.
Who should use Canva’s free Affinity?
- Freelance designers: a way to access vector, photo, and layout tools without a recurring Affinity license.
- Illustrators and brand designers: useful if precise paths, shapes, typography, and identity construction matter more than template-driven creation.
- Photographers: a candidate for layered editing and compositing alongside vector and page-design work.

Affinity may be a weaker fit if your main need is browser-first real-time collaboration, template-driven social publishing, advanced motion graphics, specialized 3D work, or a very specific plugin ecosystem. That does not mean it cannot perform an individual task in one of those categories; it means the product’s strongest case is precision-oriented 2D design rather than every kind of creative production.

Optional hardware: when a graphics tablet helps
Affinity does not require special hardware. A mouse and keyboard are enough to begin, and many layout and vector tasks may be more comfortable with traditional desktop controls.
If you illustrate, retouch photographs, paint masks, or make frequent path and shape adjustments, pen input can make precision work more comfortable. A graphics tablet for Affinity is an optional accessory, not part of the software’s price or a prerequisite for using it. A pressure-sensitive tablet such as the Wacom Intuos Medium Bluetooth is the kind of hardware to compare if pen-based input matches your working style; verify the current model, operating-system compatibility, price, stock, and any applicable disclosure requirements before buying.

Canva says that Affinity content is not used to train or develop its AI features, including content created with Canva AI tools inside Affinity. That statement should be reported precisely: it is Canva’s published position, not an unconditional legal or technical guarantee covering every possible account configuration or future policy.
If you work with confidential client material, review Canva’s current privacy terms, AI settings, organizational controls, subprocessors, and regional requirements before enabling connected features. Schools, agencies, and regulated organizations may also need internal approval before using AI or cloud-connected services, even when the provider says the content is excluded from model training.
What Canva’s Affinity relaunch does—and does not—prove
The relaunch gives the market a notable free professional-design option. It combines the former vector, photo, and publishing categories in one application and removes the Affinity license fee from the basic purchasing decision.
It does not prove that every Adobe-centered workflow can migrate without adjustment. It does not make Canva premium AI part of the free Affinity entitlement. It does not guarantee identical file conversion, universal plugin support, or superior performance on every computer. And it does not mean that every Canva collaboration, asset, storage, or brand-management feature is included at no cost.
Canva reported that more than five million creatives had adopted Affinity by the time of its 2026 announcement. That is a company-reported adoption figure, not an independently audited market measurement.

A practical decision checklist
Affinity is worth a serious trial if most of these statements are true:
- You need vector, photo, and layout tools in the same desktop application.
- You want to avoid a recurring Affinity software license.
- You work on Mac or Windows, or have confirmed current support for your intended platform.
- You are willing to test important PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, or IDML files before migrating.
- You value precision and control more than a template-first, browser-only workflow.
- You may benefit from Canva Brand System, Canva publishing, optional AI, or the announced scripting and file integrations.
Be more cautious if your work depends on a particular plugin, unusual font technology, complex application-specific effects, a tightly integrated Adobe pipeline, or guaranteed round-tripping with collaborators. In those cases, install Affinity beside your existing tools and run a controlled pilot rather than replacing the old workflow immediately.
