Scrappy table toppers are small quilted projects made from assorted fabric pieces, usually with a pieced top, batting, backing, quilting, and a finished edge. They are useful for clearing out remnants, trying a new block, making seasonal table décor, or finishing something substantially faster than a bed-size quilt.
The name does not describe one standardized pattern. The AllPeopleQuilt roundup titled Scrappy Table Toppers is a collection of 24 tabletop projects, including square toppers, runners, seasonal designs, strip-pieced layouts, triangle units, nine-patches, stars, and other small quilted projects. Sizes, materials, construction methods, and difficulty vary from one project to the next.

A table topper is a small quilted piece intended for a table, dresser, sideboard, coffee table, or similar surface. It may be square, rectangular, round, or an irregular decorative shape. Some are close to miniature quilts; others are more like short runners or oversized placemats.
“Scrappy” refers to the fabric approach rather than a particular block. You might combine leftovers from previous quilts, low-volume prints, coordinated batiks, solids, antique-fabric snippets, charm squares, or seasonal remnants. The fabrics do not need to match exactly. They do need to be stable enough for the cutting plan and arranged with enough contrast for the blocks or shapes to remain visible.

Examples in the AllPeopleQuilt collection include Saltwater Taffy, A Bit of History, Bright Bits Mini Quilt, Balancing Act Table Topper, Bay Breeze, Bitty Bow Ties, Harvest Table, Scrappy Nine-Patch Quilt, Autumn Harvest, Table Matters, Fall Mix, and Scrappy Triangles. Some are suitable for a controlled color scheme, while others are designed to look deliberately varied.
Check the individual project instructions before assuming that a particular design is free, reversible, beginner-level, or a certain finished size. A roundup can group projects under one title even when their access conditions and construction details differ.
Why make one?
- Use small leftovers: narrow strips, leftover squares, and odd pieces can become useful rather than remaining in the scrap bin.
- Test a color combination: a small topper lets you experiment with contrast, value, or seasonal colors before committing to a large quilt.
- Finish a manageable project: the piecing and quilting are compact enough to make the project less intimidating than a bed quilt.
- Change décor seasonally: fall prints, spring colors, antique-inspired fabrics, and holiday palettes can each produce a different look.
- Practice techniques: table toppers are useful for learning strip piecing, half-square triangles, nine-patches, log cabins, binding, and machine quilting.
Choose a construction style
Charm-square layouts
If you already own precut 5-inch squares, choose a pattern built around charm squares. Bay Breeze and similar designs can reduce cutting and make it easier to assemble a coordinated project. Charm packs commonly contain 5-inch squares, although the exact number and fabric assortment vary by manufacturer.
Precuts are not required. You can cut your own squares from scraps, provided the pieces are large enough to yield the required dimensions after trimming and seam allowances.
Strip-pieced toppers
Strip piecing is an efficient choice when your scraps are long and narrow. Sew strips into a panel, subcut the panel into units, and rearrange those units into the final design. A representative Penny Spool Quilts project uses assorted scrap strips for the top, a fat quarter or pieced scraps for the backing, and either a fat quarter or several 2.5-inch strips for the binding.
Strip layouts can be quilted with straight lines, wavy lines, crosshatching, quilting in the ditch, meandering, or stippling. The best quilting pattern depends on the design and your machine-quilting comfort.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTriangles and half-square triangles
Triangle units create diagonal movement and are especially effective for seasonal or high-contrast palettes. Projects such as Scrappy Triangles and Autumn Harvest show how triangles can turn unrelated scraps into a directional design.
Half-square triangles require accurate cutting and sewing because small errors accumulate along diagonal seams. Pressing and trimming each unit consistently matters more than having identical fabrics.
Nine-patches and familiar blocks
Nine-patches, bow ties, stars, pinwheels, and other recognizable blocks are easy to scale to a tabletop project. Scrappy Nine-Patch Quilt and Bitty Bow Ties demonstrate how a familiar block can become a compact decorative piece rather than a full-size quilt.

Log cabins and controlled seasonal palettes
A log-cabin arrangement is a practical way to use strips of different lengths. Harvest Table uses a log-cabin structure with fall-hued prints. For a more controlled result, sort scraps into a limited palette such as rust, gold, olive, and brown, or combine coordinated batiks and solids as in Fall Mix.

Most table-topper patterns require the same basic group of supplies:
- assorted quilting-cotton scraps for the top;
- background fabric, when the design calls for one;
- backing fabric;
- batting;
- binding fabric, unless the pattern uses a self-binding finish;
- cotton or quilting thread;
- a sewing machine and standard sewing supplies;
- an iron and pressing surface;
- a rotary cutter, cutting mat, and quilting ruler, or fabric scissors;
- quilting clips or safety pins for basting;
- a walking foot if you plan to machine-quilt the layered project.
For accurate scrap cutting, a quilting rotary cutter is the most useful central tool. OLFA identifies a 45 mm cutter as a common size for cutting quilting strips and shapes; a 60 mm cutter is better suited to longer, heavier cuts and trimming through a quilt top, batting, and backing. Use any rotary cutter with a suitable self-healing mat and ruler, and keep the blade closed or covered whenever it is not in use.
A self-healing cutting mat and quilting ruler make the setup more useful than a rotary cutter alone. A 6-by-24-inch ruler is convenient for strips and long edges, while a smaller square ruler helps with blocks and trimming. An 18-by-24-inch mat is a practical general-purpose size for many home cutting stations. OLFA also sells kits pairing a 45 mm rotary cutter with a 12-by-18-inch double-sided mat and angle and grid markings; a kit is an option, not a requirement.
Fabric selection: controlled scrappy or deliberately mixed?
There are two reliable ways to organize scraps.
- Controlled scrappy: choose a palette, such as blue and white, spring pastels, or fall colors. Keep backgrounds relatively consistent and vary the prints within the palette.
- Deliberately mixed: combine many colors and print scales, but repeat a background, value range, or block structure to keep the result visually connected.
Sort scraps by color, lightness and darkness, print scale, or fabric collection before cutting. Lay proposed pieces next to one another in daylight. A group of fabrics can be attractive individually but disappear when neighboring pieces have nearly identical values.
Quilting cotton is the safest general recommendation for a beginner because it is stable, widely available, and designed for ordinary patchwork techniques. Avoid using a very loosely woven, damaged, or heavily distorted scrap simply because it is the right color. Small pieces have less seam allowance to support them, so weak fabric can fray or stretch during assembly.
Do not assume scraps alone will supply everything. Most projects still need backing, batting, thread, and often binding fabric. A planned purchase of one neutral or coordinating fabric can make a mixed scrap collection easier to use.
How much fabric and batting do you need?
There is no universal material list or finished size for this roundup. Independent examples include projects around 17.5 inches square, 18 inches square, and rectangular runners around 15 by 43 inches, among other dimensions. Follow the measurements for the individual pattern.
As one representative example, an 18-inch finished strip-based topper uses approximately a 20-by-20-inch piece of batting, with extra fabric and batting added if the project is enlarged. A beginner-oriented star project lists approximately 18-by-18-inch batting for its smaller finished piece. These are examples, not a universal cutting formula.

Cut batting and backing several inches larger than the finished top when the instructions permit. The extra margin gives you room to baste, quilt, and trim without discovering that a layer has shifted beyond the edge.
Batting choice and shrinkage
Low-loft cotton batting is a common choice for a table topper because it gives the piece body without making it excessively thick. Warm & Natural is one commercially available low-loft option; the manufacturer describes it as needle-punched and suitable for quilts, wall hangings, placemats, and similar crafts.
Warm & Natural’s published guidance makes pre-washing optional and notes approximately 3% shrinkage after a cold wash. If you want a deliberately crinkled appearance, or if you need the fabric and batting to behave more predictably after laundering, pre-washing may be appropriate. Follow the care instructions for the specific fabric and batting you buy.
Safety distinction: an ordinary quilted table topper is not automatically suitable for microwave use. The Warm Company states that its cotton, polyester, and blended battings are not recommended for microwave projects. Do not turn a decorative topper into a microwave bowl cozy, trivet, or hot pad without selecting materials specifically appropriate for that use.

Step-by-step workflow
1. Select the pattern and confirm the finished size
Choose the block or layout before cutting. Confirm the finished dimensions, seam allowance, fabric requirements, pressing instructions, quilting density, and edge finish. Do not cut from the roundup title alone because the projects are not standardized.
2. Sort and audition the scraps
Separate fabric by palette, value, and usable size. Remove badly frayed sections and note which pieces are large enough for squares, strips, triangles, or binding. Arrange a small sample of the intended fabrics before cutting the entire set.
3. Cut accurately
Press wrinkled fabric first, align the grain and ruler markings, and cut with a sharp rotary blade. For a rotary cutter, keep your non-cutting hand clear of the blade path and use a stable mat. A ruler with clear grid and angle markings is especially useful for strips and half-square triangles.
When a pattern specifies a triangle or half-square-triangle method, cut the exact size it recommends. Do not casually substitute a different method without allowing for its seam and trimming requirements.
4. Piece the top
Sew with a consistent seam allowance, commonly the allowance specified by the pattern. Press seams in the instructed direction or press them open when appropriate. Arrange completed units on a design wall, floor, or large table before sewing them into rows or sections. This is the easiest point to correct an unbalanced color placement.

5. Make the quilt sandwich
For a conventional quilt sandwich, layer the backing, batting, and pieced top according to the pattern’s instructions, then baste the layers with clips, safety pins, or temporary spray if suitable for your materials. Some projects use a different layering order for reversible or self-binding construction, so follow the individual directions rather than applying one method to every topper.
6. Quilt the layers
Simple straight lines are a good starting point. You can quilt along seam lines, use a walking foot for evenly spaced lines, or add crosshatching, wavy lines, meandering, or stippling. Keep the quilting density compatible with the batting manufacturer’s instructions. Warm & Natural states that its batting can be quilted or tied up to 10 inches apart, but the specific product label should take priority if you use a different batting.
7. Trim and square
After quilting, trim away excess batting and backing. Check the corners and diagonal measurements if the shape is square. Small differences can often be corrected during trimming, but avoid removing so much fabric that the intended finished size or binding allowance is lost.
8. Finish the edge
Use separate binding when the pattern calls for it. Binding can be made from a fat quarter or multiple 2.5-inch strips, depending on the project and required length. Other patterns use self-binding: the backing is cut or positioned to wrap around the front edge, then turned and stitched. A star table-topper pattern is one example of a project using a self-binding method.
Do not combine a separate-binding cutting plan with a self-binding finish unless you recalculate the dimensions. The two methods use different allowances and layering arrangements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical beginner plan
If this is your first small quilt, choose a square or strip-based topper with straight seams and a simple edge finish. A sensible sequence is:
- Choose five to eight quilting-cotton scraps with clear light-dark contrast.
- Pick a pattern using squares, strips, or a basic nine-patch rather than starting with numerous bias-edge triangles.
- Cut a few test units and measure them before cutting the full set.
- Use one consistent background fabric if the scraps look visually chaotic.
- Make a conventional top, batting, and backing sandwich.
- Quilt straight lines with a walking foot.
- Trim the piece square and apply the pattern’s recommended binding.
This approach keeps the design approachable while still teaching the complete quilt process: planning, cutting, piecing, pressing, layering, quilting, trimming, and finishing.

The topper looks muddy
The fabrics may have insufficient value contrast. Photograph the layout in black and white or squint at it from a distance. Replace a few neighboring fabrics with lighter or darker options rather than discarding the entire arrangement.
The blocks are different sizes
Check seam allowance consistency, pressing distortion, and cutting accuracy. Trim units to a common size if the pattern allows it. For future blocks, sew a test unit and measure it before producing the rest.

The top is wavy after quilting
There may not have been enough basting, the quilting may have pulled the layers unevenly, or the quilting lines may be spaced inconsistently. Baste more securely, quilt from the center outward when appropriate, and use a walking foot for straight machine quilting.
The backing or batting is too small
Measure the finished top before layering and leave a generous margin around it. If the layers are already quilted and the shortage is visible, do not simply bind over an uncovered edge; reassess whether the project can be trimmed smaller or whether the quilting must be removed and the layers replaced.

The binding does not reach around the edge
Calculate the perimeter before cutting binding and add joining and corner-turning allowance. If the pattern specifies 2.5-inch strips, that width is only part of the calculation; the total strip length must also be sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size is a scrappy table topper?
There is no single standard size. Examples include toppers around 17.5 or 18 inches square as well as rectangular runners around 15 by 43 inches. Use the finished dimensions supplied by the specific pattern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan I make a table topper entirely from scraps?
You can use scraps for much of the pieced top, but most projects still require backing, batting, thread, and often binding fabric. Scraps must also be large and stable enough for the selected cutting plan.
What fabric is best for a beginner scrappy table topper?
Quilting cotton is the safest general choice because it is stable, widely available, and compatible with standard patchwork techniques. Mix prints by color and value, but avoid weak or badly frayed fabric.
Do I need a rotary cutter for a table topper?
No. Fabric scissors can work, especially for a small project. A rotary cutter used with a self-healing mat and quilting ruler usually makes strips, squares, triangles, and binding more consistent.
Can I use quilt batting for a microwave bowl cozy or hot pad?
Not automatically. A decorative table topper and a microwave project have different safety requirements. Warm & Natural states that its cotton, polyester, and blended battings are not recommended for microwave use.
Should I bind a scrappy table topper?
Usually, but not always. Many patterns use separate binding, while some use a self-binding method in which the backing wraps around the front edge. Follow the finish specified by the individual pattern.
The Bottom Line
Scrappy table toppers are compact quilt projects, not one single pattern: choose a design based on the scraps, size, and technique you want to practice. The most accessible route is a simple strip, square, or nine-patch layout made with quilting cotton, followed by a batting-and-backing sandwich, straightforward quilting, trimming, and binding. Start with the exact instructions for the chosen project, and treat batting and microwave safety as separate decisions.
