Cricut Explore 5 Takes Up Less Space Without Giving Up 12-Inch Projects

Cricut Explore 5 is 30% more compact than previous models while retaining a 12-inch cutting format, support for more than 100 materials, and functions including Print Then Cut, scoring, foiling, and drawing. Here is how it compares with Explore 4 and Joy 2.

Cricut Explore 5 gives the company’s popular 12-inch cutting-machine format a smaller footprint. Cricut says the redesigned model is 30% more compact than previous models, while still working with more than 100 materials and supporting vinyl decals, stickers, apparel, cards, scoring, foiling, drawing, and Print Then Cut.

Yes—Cricut Explore 5 is designed to give you the familiar 12-inch Explore-format workflow in a smaller machine. Cricut says the redesign is 30% more compact than previous models, while still supporting more than 100 materials and projects such as vinyl decals, stickers, cards, apparel, and personalized crafts.

That makes Explore 5 more interesting as a space-saving craft machine than as a dramatic performance upgrade. Its headline improvement is the reduced footprint and simplified beginner-oriented design—not a proven leap in cutting power over the previous Explore generation.

What is the Cricut Explore 5?

The Cricut Explore 5 is Cricut’s newest model in its popular Explore family of cutting machines. It is a desktop electronic cutter that connects to Cricut Design Space and can cut, write, draw, foil, score, and handle intricate designs.

It is intended for makers who want more capacity than a compact card-and-label machine, but do not want a large professional-style cutter taking over a craft room. The machine remains in the 12-inch cutting category, which is important: “more compact” does not mean Cricut has reduced it to the narrow workflow associated with the Joy line.

For a painter or mixed-media crafter, that capacity can be useful for making stencil elements, labels, painted sign details, card components, packaging stickers, and masks for repeatable designs. The Explore 5 is not a paint application machine, but it can help prepare and personalize many of the surfaces and templates used in a painting workspace.

Explore 5 size: what Cricut’s 30% claim actually means

Cricut describes Explore 5 as 30% more compact than previous models. The available product information does not provide a complete before-and-after measurement table, so it is not possible to responsibly translate that claim into exact reductions in width, depth, or total volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical interpretation is simpler: Explore 5 is redesigned for smaller desks, shared workspaces, and craft rooms where every bit of surface area matters. It still uses the familiar 12-inch project category, so you are not trading the machine’s main size advantage for a toy-sized cutting width.

Remember that the machine’s footprint is only part of the space requirement. You also need room in front of it for loading mats or materials, room beside it for tools and cut pieces, and storage for cardstock, vinyl, transfer tape, mats, and finished projects. Its compact redesign should make a workspace easier to manage, but it does not eliminate the need for a workable operating area.

What can Cricut Explore 5 do?

Cricut says Explore 5 works with more than 100 materials, including vinyl, iron-on, cardstock, and printable materials. Its documented functions include:

  • Cutting intricate designs and common craft materials
  • Writing and drawing with compatible pens or markers
  • Scoring fold lines for cards and paper projects
  • Foil transfer with the compatible Foil Transfer Tool
  • Print Then Cut projects using a compatible home inkjet printer
  • Deep cutting with the separately sold Deep Cutting Tool

Print Then Cut is particularly useful for full-color stickers and labels. You print the artwork on compatible printable material with an inkjet printer, then load it into Explore 5 so the machine can detect the registration marks and cut around the printed images.

Perfect for beginners, hobby crafters, teachers, small business owners & DIY makers.

That process is different from cutting ordinary solid-color vinyl. It requires a compatible inkjet printer, suitable printable material, enough contrast for the machine to read the registration marks, and careful adherence to the loading instructions. Explore 5 does not print the artwork itself.

Materials and tools

The standard machine supports a broad range of common craft materials, but the exact result depends on the material setting, blade, mat condition, design complexity, and how the material is loaded. Cricut lists vinyl, iron-on, cardstock, printable materials, and many other options among the supported materials.

The machine is compatible with five tool types, including the Premium Fine-Point Cutting Tool, Deep Cutting Tool, Foil Transfer Tool, Bonded-Fabric Blade, and compatible pens or markers. The Deep Cutting Tool is sold separately and is intended for materials up to 1.5 mm thick, such as heavy cardstock, poster board, craft foam, rubber, and magnet sheets.

Do not assume that every material in the “more than 100” category can be cut with the tool included in the box. Thicker, denser, bonded, or specialty materials may need a different tool, a stronger mat, or a manufacturer-recommended setting.

What comes in the box?

Contents depend on whether you buy the machine alone or choose a bundle. Cricut’s machine-only listing includes:

  • Explore 5 cutting machine
  • Premium Fine-Point Cutting Tool
  • Scoring Tool
  • Dual-sided black marker
  • 12-by-12-inch LightGrip mat
  • USB cable and power adapter
  • Practice materials
  • A Cricut Access trial for new customers

A listed starter bundle adds items such as a mini weeder, ruler, Smart Iron-On, Smart Vinyl, transfer tape, and cardstock. Check the contents of the exact bundle before buying because included tools, materials, colors, prices, and availability can change.

If you already own compatible Cricut supplies, the machine-only option may be the better value. If you are starting from nothing, an Cricut Explore 5 Essential Bundle can be more convenient because it packages some of the basic materials and tools needed for early projects. Compare the bundle premium with the retail cost of the items you actually need rather than assuming every bundle is automatically cheaper.

Setup, software, and subscription requirements

Explore 5 uses Bluetooth Low Energy to connect automatically within range through Cricut Design Space. You need a compatible phone, tablet, or computer, plus high-speed internet for setup and the full software experience.

Additional content can always be purchased a la carte, or go all in with a Cricut Access Subscription to unlock our ever-growing library for a small reoccurring monthly or annual fee.

A Cricut Access subscription is not required to operate the machine. Design Space includes free content, while Cricut Access is an optional paid subscription that adds more digital designs and subscriber features. You can therefore use your own designs and available free content without treating the subscription as part of the machine’s mandatory operating cost.

Cricut’s quick-start information also describes a simplified button interface, load-and-go operation, a redesigned compact footprint, and a snap-in pen holder. Those changes are aimed mainly at reducing friction for new users. They should not be presented as proof of faster cutting or independently verified reliability because the available information is manufacturer documentation, not hands-on testing.

Explore 5 versus Explore 4

The most defensible difference between Explore 5 and Explore 4 is the physical redesign and the updated beginner-oriented workflow. Cricut positions Explore 5 around a smaller footprint, simplified use, and value.

It is not supported by the available evidence to claim that Explore 5 cuts dramatically more materials, produces fundamentally different results, or represents a major power increase over Explore 4. Both machines target familiar projects such as shirts, stickers, cards, and decals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should upgrade? Explore 4 owners who are satisfied with their machine have relatively little urgency based solely on cutting capability. The upgrade makes more sense if you are reorganizing a cramped craft room, want the newer interface, are buying your first Explore machine, or can obtain Explore 5 at an attractive price.

For new buyers, the decision is less complicated: choose Explore 5 if its compact 12-inch format matches your projects and workspace. Choose an older Explore model only after checking its current price, condition, warranty, included tools, and the value of the space savings to you.

Explore 5 versus Cricut Joy 2

Cricut Joy 2 is much smaller and less expensive, but it is not a direct replacement for Explore 5.

Feature Cricut Explore 5 Cricut Joy 2
U.S. starting price at launch/current listing $199 starting price listed by Cricut; bundles and promotions vary $99 starting price listed by Cricut; bundles and promotions vary

Joy 2 adds scoring and Print Then Cut compared with the original Joy. It can make full-color stickers and similar projects with a compatible inkjet printer and printable materials. But its 4.5-inch cutting width makes it a different kind of tool.

How much does Explore 5 cost?

Cricut lists Explore 5 at a U.S. starting price of $199. The launch announcement placed initial availability through Cricut.com and Michaels beginning February 27, 2026, with broader North American availability beginning March 13, 2026.

Prices, colors, bundles, promotions, and inventory are volatile. The machine-only configuration may be unavailable while a bundle remains in stock, or a temporary promotion may change which option offers the better value. Treat $199 as the cited starting price—not a permanent price guarantee.

Buying Cricut Explore 5 at Michaels may appeal to shoppers who prefer an established craft retailer, but confirm the current stock, return policy, and exact bundle contents before checkout. Retail availability and any partner or affiliate relationship should be verified at the time of purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you budget for after the machine?

A machine-only purchase is not the same as a complete project kit. Depending on what you make, you may need:

  • Vinyl and transfer tape for decals and labels
  • Iron-on material for shirts, bags, and fabric projects
  • Cardstock for cards and paper construction
  • Printable sticker paper or printable vinyl for Print Then Cut
  • Replacement mats and cutting tools
  • A weeding tool for removing excess vinyl
  • A compatible inkjet printer for full-color printable projects

Cricut Smart Vinyl and Cricut Smart Iron-On are relevant consumables for decals, labels, and apparel, but check the material instructions and compatibility before substituting one for the other. Smart materials are not interchangeable simply because both are fed into a Cricut machine.

The included LightGrip mat is useful for suitable lightweight materials. A Cricut LightGrip mat will eventually need cleaning or replacement as its adhesive surface accumulates dust and fibers. The Cricut Deep Cutting Tool is an optional purchase if you plan to work with thicker materials; it is not necessary for ordinary vinyl, cardstock, or iron-on projects.

For Print Then Cut, choose printable sticker paper for Cricut or another material specifically rated for the process. The material must feed reliably through your printer and remain securely positioned on the mat while Explore 5 reads and follows the registration marks.

Who should buy Cricut Explore 5?

Explore 5 is a strong fit for:

  • Beginners who want a full-size Explore-format cutter without a larger previous-generation footprint
  • Crafters working on 12-inch projects, apparel, cards, stickers, and decals
  • People who make multiples and need more working width than Joy 2 provides
  • Shared craft rooms, apartments, and desks where compact equipment is valuable
  • Mixed-media and painting hobbyists who want repeatable labels, stencils, masks, or decorative cut elements

Who should skip it?

Explore 5 may not be the best choice if you only make very small labels, occasional quick cards, or narrow decals. Joy 2 is substantially smaller and starts at a lower price.

It is also not an especially compelling upgrade for an Explore 4 owner who already has adequate workspace and is happy with current results. The available evidence supports a convenience and footprint upgrade more strongly than a cutting-capability upgrade.

Finally, do not buy it expecting an independent performance guarantee. The supplied information does not establish Explore 5’s noise level, real-world cut speed, long-term reliability, or comparative cut quality. Those questions require hands-on testing beyond Cricut’s specifications.

Bottom line

Cricut Explore 5’s main advantage is easy to understand: it keeps the useful 12-inch Explore workflow while taking up less room. Cricut says it is 30% more compact, supports more than 100 materials, and handles cutting, writing, drawing, scoring, foiling, and Print Then Cut.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy it for the combination of full-size project capability and a smaller workspace—not because the available evidence shows a revolutionary increase in cutting power. For larger decals, apparel, cards, sticker batches, and painting-related templates, Explore 5 is the more versatile choice. For tiny, fast projects and the smallest possible desk footprint, Joy 2 is the better match.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much smaller is the Cricut Explore 5?

Cricut says Explore 5 is 30% more compact than previous models, but the supplied specifications do not provide a complete dimensional comparison by width, depth, or volume. The practical benefit is a smaller footprint for desks and shared craft rooms.

Do you need a Cricut Access subscription to use Explore 5?

No. Cricut says Design Space includes free content, and a Cricut Access subscription is optional. Access adds digital content and subscriber features but is not required to operate the machine.

Should you buy Cricut Explore 5 or Cricut Joy 2?

Explore 5 is the better choice for 12-inch projects, apparel, larger decals, cards, stickers, and making multiples. Joy 2 is much smaller, has a 4.5-inch cutting width, and is better for quick cards, labels, and small decals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What comes with Cricut Explore 5?

The machine-only listing includes a Premium Fine-Point Cutting Tool, Scoring Tool, dual-sided black marker, 12-by-12-inch LightGrip mat, USB cable, power adapter, practice materials, and a Cricut Access trial for new customers. Bundle contents differ.

The Bottom Line

Explore 5 is best understood as a more compact 12-inch Cricut, not a radically more powerful one. It suits beginners and small workspaces that still need apparel, decals, cards, stickers, and larger projects. Joy 2 is cheaper and much smaller; satisfied Explore 4 owners have less reason to upgrade unless space and the redesigned workflow matter.
