To convert a photo into clip art, first decide whether you need a quick raster illustration or editable vector artwork. Photoshop and Canva are fastest for cartoon-like images; Photoshop Threshold, Illustrator, and Inkscape work well for silhouettes and stencils; Illustrator Image Trace or Inkscape Trace Bitmap are the right choices for scalable clip art. Whichever method you choose, automatic conversion should be followed by deliberate simplification and cleanup.
The best way to convert a photo into clip art depends on the result you need. Use Photoshop or Canva for a quick cartoon-like raster image, Photoshop Threshold or a tracing tool for a stencil or silhouette, and Illustrator or Inkscape when you need editable artwork that can scale cleanly. In every case, automatic conversion is only a starting point: the strongest result comes from simplifying the image and manually cleaning the important shapes.
Choose the kind of clip art you want first
“Clip art” can mean either a simplified pixel-based illustration or vector artwork made from editable paths. That distinction determines which workflow you should use.

| Desired result | Best starting method | Typical output |
|---|---|---|
| Quick cartoon or posterized image | Photoshop Posterize or Canva Cartoonify | JPG or transparent PNG |
| Stencil, silhouette, or coloring-page base | Photoshop Threshold, Illustrator Black and White or Outline, or Inkscape Trace Bitmap | Black-and-white raster or vector artwork |
| Scalable, editable clip art | Illustrator Image Trace or Inkscape Trace Bitmap | SVG, AI, or another vector file |
| Professional illustration | Trace as a base, then redraw and simplify manually | Clean, custom vector or raster artwork |
A large PNG is still a raster image. It may print well at an appropriate size, but it does not scale indefinitely like an SVG or other vector file.
Start with the right photo
The source image has more influence on the result than most conversion settings. Choose a photo with one obvious subject, good lighting, reasonably sharp edges, and strong separation from the background. A plain or uncluttered background gives selection and tracing tools fewer ambiguous edges to interpret.
- Use one main subject. A single person, animal, object, or flower is easier to simplify than a crowded scene.
- Look for clear contrast. The subject should not blend into the background, especially if you want a silhouette or stencil.
- Use enough resolution. The image must contain enough information to preserve distinctive features before you simplify it.
- Consider the final size. Small details that look attractive at 400% may disappear when the artwork is used as a sticker, icon, or printed embellishment.
- Check the pose or composition. The subject should remain recognizable after shadows, textures, and other photographic detail are removed.
Text, logos, and precise geometric forms deserve special attention. Automatic tracing may produce inaccurate letterforms or uneven geometric shapes. Recreate those elements manually with identified fonts, shape tools, or redrawn paths instead of trusting the trace.
Method 1: Make quick raster clip art in Photoshop
This is the most flexible approach when you want a posterized illustration, sticker-like image, silhouette, or transparent PNG without needing editable vector paths.
1. Open the photo and preserve the original
Open the image in Photoshop and keep an untouched copy of the original layer. Work with adjustment layers where possible so you can change the effect later without permanently altering the source pixels.
2. Isolate the subject
Use Select Subject to create an initial selection. Add to or subtract from the selection as needed, then use Select and Mask to refine the edge. For a straightforward image, Photoshop’s Remove Background quick action can also isolate the subject and create a masked or transparent result.
After isolation, place the subject over a solid-color background. This prevents unrelated objects from turning into accidental clip-art shapes and makes it easier to judge the silhouette.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Simplify the colors with Posterize
Add a Posterize adjustment layer. Posterize reduces the image to a smaller number of tonal levels, creating broad, flat regions instead of continuous photographic shading.
There is no universal level setting. Use more levels when facial features, fur, clothing, or other identifying details must remain recognizable. Use fewer levels for a bold icon, sticker, or pop-art effect. Once the tonal structure is right, recolor the image with a restrained palette rather than preserving every original photographic color.

For a more deliberate illustration, use the posterized result as a guide: select or paint the major regions, give them a coordinated palette, and remove shapes that do not contribute to recognition.
4. Make a stencil or silhouette with Threshold
For a high-contrast black-and-white result, add a Threshold adjustment layer. Pixels lighter than the selected threshold become white and darker pixels become black.

If the result is noisy, simplify the image first with contrast adjustments or a small amount of blur, then remove unwanted islands on a layer mask. If important features disappear, reduce the simplification or use a limited-color posterized version instead of pure black and white.
5. Clean the raster artwork
Inspect the result at its intended output size. Remove stray dots, awkward gaps, tiny isolated shapes, and details that will vanish when the image is reduced. Clip art usually becomes stronger when it contains fewer, clearer shapes.
Export a transparent version as a PNG when you need to place it over another design. If you need clean paths for printing, cutting, or unlimited scaling, use the Photoshop result as preparation and continue in Illustrator or Inkscape.
Method 2: Create scalable vector clip art in Illustrator
Illustrator is the better choice when the finished artwork must be editable, recolorable, and scalable. Its Image Trace feature converts a raster image into vector artwork, but the automatic trace should be treated as a foundation rather than a finished illustration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Prepare the photo before tracing
Crop the image, improve contrast, isolate the subject, and simplify or remove the background before importing it. Preparation reduces the number of paths Image Trace has to create and makes the result easier to edit.
If you have already isolated the subject in Photoshop, use that prepared image rather than tracing a busy original photograph.
2. Place the image and open Image Trace
In Illustrator, choose File > Place, select the raster image, and place it on the artboard. Select the image, then open Window > Image Trace.

Save a copy of the document before expanding the trace. Once expanded, the result becomes ordinary vector paths and you can no longer adjust the Image Trace settings on that expanded artwork.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Choose a tracing preset
- Low Color: a useful starting point for simplified colored clip art and posterized artwork.
- Black and White: a two-tone result for bold graphics, silhouettes, and stencil-like designs.
- Outline: a simplified black-outline treatment.
- Auto-Color: lets Illustrator analyze the source and select a color treatment.
- High Color: retains substantially more photographic detail, but often looks less like conventional clip art.
Grayscale is another option when you want tonal artwork without a full-color result. Start with the simplest preset that preserves the subject’s identity; adding detail is easy, while removing thousands of unnecessary shapes takes more work.
4. Balance detail and simplicity
Use the Image Trace controls to shape the result:
- Colors: increase for more colored regions and decrease for flatter artwork.
- Paths: increase for closer edge following and decrease for smoother, simpler contours.
- Corners: control how strongly corners are retained.
- Noise: raise to suppress small unwanted details and specks.
- Transparency: useful when transparency in the source should not become an unwanted background shape.
- Ignore Color: can remove a selected color from the trace when that color should not become a shape.
Judge the trace at two scales: enlarged, so you can inspect path quality, and at the final intended size, so you can see whether small shapes are useful or merely visual noise. A technically detailed trace is not necessarily better clip art.
5. Expand and manually edit the trace
When the preview is close, choose Expand. Illustrator converts the trace into editable vector paths. You can then ungroup the artwork, recolor regions, delete stray shapes, and repair contours with the Direct Selection tool.
Use Object > Path > Simplify to remove excess anchor points after expansion. Apply it carefully and inspect important curves afterward: aggressive simplification can change the silhouette.
Manual cleanup commonly includes:
- Deleting tiny shapes that will not survive at the final size.
- Joining or reshaping broken contours.
- Closing unwanted gaps in the silhouette.
- Redrawing eyes, lettering, logos, or geometric details.
- Unifying the palette and removing near-duplicate colors.
- Exaggerating distinctive features so the image reads as illustration rather than a compressed photograph.
A pressure-sensitive drawing tablet is an optional aid during this manual cleanup stage, especially when you are painting masks, tracing contours, or redrawing small details. It is not required for automatic conversion, and a mouse or trackpad is sufficient for many edits.
6. Save and export the appropriate file
Save an editable master as AI or SVG. Export a PNG when the destination needs a raster image with transparency. For print or cutting, inspect the artwork at its final size and confirm that small holes, narrow gaps, and delicate interior shapes will remain usable.
Method 3: Use Inkscape as a free vector alternative
Inkscape provides a free bitmap-tracing workflow under Path > Trace Bitmap, with the default shortcut Shift+Alt+B. It converts bitmap information into one or more paths in an SVG drawing.
- Import the photo and duplicate it so the original remains available.
- Crop the image and isolate or simplify the subject where possible.
- Open Path > Trace Bitmap.
- Start with a brightness-cutoff approach for a silhouette or a limited-color approach for colored artwork.
- Apply the trace, then move the resulting paths away from the source image so you can inspect them.
- Delete noise, simplify paths, recolor regions, and redraw important details manually.
- Save the editable master as SVG and export PNG when a raster image is required.
Inkscape’s tracing workflow is best understood as a way to obtain usable contours, not as a one-click method for producing a perfect copy or finished illustration. The same design judgment applies: simplify the background, remove unnecessary paths, and manually fix the shapes that matter most.

Method 4: Use Canva for a fast cartoon-style result
For a casual social graphic or personal project, Canva’s Cartoonify workflow is the quickest option. Upload the image, choose the Cartoonify app, adjust the result, and download a JPG or PNG.
This approach is convenient, but it produces a cartoon-style raster image rather than clean, editable vector clip art. Choose it when speed matters more than path control. If the final file must be an SVG, a cutting file, or a carefully controlled set of color regions, use Illustrator or Inkscape instead. Canva’s available plans and features can change, so check the current plan details before committing to a paid workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make the result look intentional
Automatic conversion often preserves photographic structure without creating a coherent illustration style. After tracing or posterizing, make a few design decisions deliberately:
- Limit the palette. A small coordinated palette usually looks more like clip art than dozens of subtly different photographic colors.
- Prioritize the silhouette. The outer contour often communicates more than interior texture.
- Remove low-value detail. Keep details that identify the subject and discard those that only describe lighting or surface texture.
- Strengthen important features. Slightly exaggerate eyes, handles, petals, facial contours, or other defining forms if they become unclear.
- Use a consistent style. Avoid combining highly realistic traced shadows with extremely flat outlines unless that contrast is intentional.
- Test the actual use case. A design for a small sticker, a T-shirt, a website icon, and a cutting machine may need different levels of detail.
Troubleshooting photo-to-clip-art conversions
The result still looks like a noisy photograph
Reduce the number of colors or tonal levels, simplify the background, and raise the tracing Noise setting. Delete small shapes manually. The goal is not to preserve every pixel; it is to retain the visual information that survives simplification.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The subject disappears into the background
Improve contrast before tracing or isolate the subject with Select Subject, Select and Mask, or Remove Background. A solid background can make the final silhouette and color regions much easier to read.
The vector file contains thousands of awkward points
Use fewer colors, lower the Paths value, raise Noise, and simplify the expanded paths. If the image is still overly complex, return to the source and remove photographic detail before tracing again. It is usually faster to make a simpler second trace than to repair every unnecessary path.
Hair, fur, or thin objects look broken
Use a limited-color result instead of a hard Threshold, retain some edge softness in the source, and manually redraw critical contours. Fine, irregular edges are difficult for automatic tracing to interpret cleanly. At small output sizes, simplifying or deliberately thickening those features may produce a more usable result than preserving every strand.
The image is not truly scalable
Check the file type. PNG and JPG files are raster images, even when exported at a large pixel dimension. For resolution-independent scaling, create or expand vector paths and save an SVG or another vector master.
The clip art looks generic
Change the palette, exaggerate the silhouette, remove photographic details, and redraw distinctive features. Treat the automatic result as a rough layout rather than the final artistic decision.

Copyright and permission checklist
Converting a photo into clip art does not automatically remove copyright restrictions. An original photograph is generally protected when it is created, and the photographer is generally the initial copyright owner unless there has been a work-made-for-hire arrangement or another transfer of ownership.
Before publishing, selling, or using the converted artwork commercially, use one of the following:
- A photograph you took and have the right to use.
- A photograph for which you have permission to make and distribute an adaptation.
- An image with a license that clearly allows the intended commercial or derivative use.
Owning a physical or digital copy of a photograph is not the same as owning its copyright. Changing someone else’s image also does not automatically give you the right to exploit the resulting derivative artwork. Fair use is fact-specific and should not be treated as blanket permission to convert photographs found online. For a commercial project or an uncertain rights situation, obtain permission or seek qualified legal advice.

What is the easiest way to turn a photo into clip art?
Use Photoshop or Canva for a quick cartoon-style JPG or PNG. Use Illustrator Image Trace or Inkscape Trace Bitmap when you need editable vector paths and an SVG that scales without losing quality.
Is a PNG converted photo considered vector clip art?
No. A PNG or JPG remains a raster image, even if it is exported at a large size. For genuine resolution-independent scaling, trace or redraw the image as vector paths and save an SVG or another vector master.
Can I sell clip art made from a photo I found online?
Yes, but only if you have the necessary rights. Converting a copyrighted photograph does not automatically remove copyright restrictions or grant permission to publish or sell the derivative artwork.
Why does my traced photo look messy?
Automatic tracing creates a starting point. You will usually need to delete noise, simplify paths, recolor regions, and redraw important contours, text, logos, or geometric shapes for a clean result.
