Most Prestige A3 DTF printing problems come from white-ink settling, blocked nozzles, air or ink-flow problems, dirty maintenance parts, incorrect settings, or incompatible film and ink. Start with a nozzle check and work from the least-invasive fix to the most involved one.
First, identify your machine. “Prestige A3” may refer to the older A3 platform, Prestige A3+, or A3+R. Button layouts, error codes, software labels, and maintenance procedures can differ. The model-specific instructions below primarily apply to the A3+ and A3+R; confirm your exact revision before removing parts or following a specialized procedure.
For the official A3+/A3+ troubleshooting reference, see Prestige A3+ and A3+R troubleshooting guidance.
Quick diagnostic checklist
Before cleaning anything, record the exact symptom and save a photograph of the nozzle check. Also note your ink brand, film brand, powder, print mode, software version, and when the problem began.

| Symptom | Likely causes | First action | Stop and escalate when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| White ink is missing or too thin | Settled ink, air, empty damper, clog, low white-strength setting, incompatible supplies | Mix the white ink, inspect the white dampers and lines, then run one normal cleaning and a nozzle check | Ink will not move through the waste line or a damper leaks |
| Banding or missing stripes | Blocked nozzles, damaged damper, wrong mode, film issue, dirty encoder strip or rollers | Run a nozzle check and compare the pattern with a good result | Several cleanings produce no improvement or the head has struck the film |
| Smears or repeated tracks | Wet ink, head strike, debris, dirty rollers, excessive ink, incorrect head height | Stop the job and inspect the film path and carriage clearance | The carriage cannot home or the printhead is visibly damaged |
| No ink through the waste tube | Blocked cap or tube, poor cap seal, failed pump, air leak, severe clog | Check the waste bottle, tube, dampers, and cap before another cleaning | There is still no flow after one normal cleaning |
| CADLink does not recognize the printer | Connection, driver, queue, or software issue | Restart CADLink, confirm the queue and connection, and test a small known-good file | The queue repeatedly reports “Unknown Error” |
| Red lights or startup errors | Film obstruction, sensor, encoder, carriage, or ink-level fault | Identify the exact code and light pattern | Red lights blink together or the error returns after reset |
| Print looks good but transfer fails | Powder, moisture, curing, film handling, or adhesion problem | Inspect powder coverage and curing rather than repeatedly cleaning the printer | The failure continues with known-good film and a controlled curing process |
1. Run and read a nozzle check
A nozzle check separates an ink-delivery problem from a media, curing, or software problem. Print the test pattern before changing several settings at once.
- Good pattern: Lines are continuous and the expected color channels appear.
- Broken segments: Some nozzles are partially blocked or ink flow is unstable.
- One missing color: Inspect that color’s damper, tube, cap, and ink supply.
- White channel absent: Check white-ink mixing, white dampers, air, waste flow, and white-strength settings.
- No ink in any relevant pattern: Suspect the capping station, pump, waste path, or a larger ink-flow fault.
If the pattern is poor, perform one normal head cleaning, then run another nozzle check. Repeated cleaning is not automatically safer or more effective: it consumes ink and may mask an air leak, poor cap seal, failed pump, or damaged damper.
The A3+ daily-maintenance procedure recommends a cleaning followed by a nozzle check. If the result remains poor, its model-specific guidance calls for drawing approximately 2–5 mL through the waste-tank line before repeating the cleaning and check. Treat that quantity as an A3+ support instruction, not a universal procedure for every A3 revision. See Prestige daily maintenance instructions.

2. Fix white ink that is missing, thin, pooling, or bleeding
White ink contains heavy pigment and can settle or separate more readily than color ink. A white-ink problem may also originate in the damper, tubing, capping station, print mode, or film coating.
- Gently mix the white ink according to the procedure for your exact printer and ink system. Do not introduce contamination into the tank.
- Inspect the white dampers. They should contain ink, sit correctly, and show no leaking, collapse, or repeated air entry.
- Inspect the white tubes. Look for bubbles, kinks, cracks, dried pigment, or a separation in the ink column.
- Check waste-line flow. A cleaning cycle should move ink through a clear, correctly installed waste path.
- Perform one normal head cleaning and run a nozzle check.
- Verify white-strength and print-mode settings. Low coverage can be a software setting; a missing nozzle cannot be repaired by increasing density.
- Test the supplies. If the issue began after changing ink or film, test with known-compatible supplies before assuming a printhead failure.
Pooling, bleeding, weak coverage, or inconsistent white can result from incompatible ink or film, a defective PET coating, expired or separated ink, or an unsuitable print mode. The A3+/A3+R troubleshooting FAQ discusses these failure modes.
If the image is correct before powdering but the finished transfer fails, do not automatically blame the printer. Check powder coverage, moisture, curing temperature and time, film handling, and adhesion. A nozzle check can be perfect while the transfer process is defective.
3. Troubleshoot banding, horizontal lines, and missing stripes
Start with the nozzle pattern. Missing or broken nozzle lines point toward ink delivery or the printhead. A clean nozzle pattern with regular, repeating bands points more strongly toward media movement, encoder feedback, alignment, settings, or mechanical contamination.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Perform one normal cleaning if the check shows missing lines.
- Inspect ink levels, dampers, and lines.
- Notice whether the banding repeats at a regular mechanical interval.
- Inspect the encoder strip if feeding, carriage positioning, or mid-print stopping is abnormal.
- Clean contaminated rollers and the media path using the approved procedure.
- Confirm film loading, print mode, resolution, ink profile, and white settings.
- Run alignment or calibration only after the nozzle pattern is acceptable.
Do not use alcohol indiscriminately. Current Prestige maintenance guidance specifies high-percentage isopropyl alcohol for the encoder strip, while warning against alcohol on media rollers and rubber components. See the Prestige maintenance guide. That guide covers L2/XL2, so use its cleaning principles cautiously and follow the A3+ procedure where it differs.
4. Fix smearing, dragging, and streaks
Stop the printer if wet ink is being dragged. Continuing can contaminate the carriage or cause a printhead strike.

- Ink smeared across the image: Check wetness, excessive ink, head height, carriage clearance, dried ink beneath the carriage, and film wrinkles.
- Repeated straight tracks: Inspect rollers and the internal media path for ink, powder, film scraps, or debris.
- Shifted or misregistered images: Check the encoder strip, carriage movement, alignment, and software settings.
- White ink spreading or pooling: Check white density, print mode, ink age, film coating, and curing.
Make sure the film is flat, correctly loaded, and compatible with the selected profile. Do not wipe the nozzle face aggressively. Current maintenance instructions say to clean around the printheads without touching the printhead face directly.
5. Diagnose no ink through the waste line
No waste-line flow means a cleaning cycle may not be drawing ink through the system. Possible causes include an empty or damaged damper, an air leak, blocked cap, poor cap seal, blocked waste tube, failed pump, or severe printhead blockage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the waste bottle is installed correctly and is not full.
- Check that the waste tube is not kinked, clipped, or blocked.
- Inspect the relevant dampers for leaks, collapse, or missing ink.
- Perform one normal cleaning.
- Check whether flow is now visible.
If there is still no flow, stop repeating cleanings. Deep cleaning may be appropriate only after the cap, pump, waste path, and dampers have been investigated. It cannot repair damaged hardware or a defective ink-delivery system.
6. Check damaged dampers safely
Common signs of a failed damper include visible leaking, an empty damper, a collapsed or unusually soft damper, one color repeatedly starving, or air that returns after cleaning. The A3+ troubleshooting guidance says leaking or soft, deflated dampers should be replaced.
Do not use a generic replacement procedure. Damper types, connectors, access panels, and printhead arrangements can vary between A3, A3+, and A3+R revisions. Verify compatibility and the exact service instructions first. Replacing a damper will not solve a blocked waste path or a capping station that cannot seal.
7. Fix CADLink and printer-recognition problems
If the printer powers on and passes a nozzle check but CADLink cannot send a job, troubleshoot the queue and connection before touching the ink system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm the printer has fully powered on.
- Check the USB or network connection.
- Close and reopen CADLink.
- Confirm that the correct printer queue is selected.
- Reset or clear the print queue.
- Verify that the driver and software match the printer model and operating system.
- Send a small, known-good test file.
- Save the exact error message, especially “Unknown Error,” before contacting support.
The A3+ support page specifically recommends resetting queues when CADLink does not recognize the printer or reports an unknown error. Do not assume a current CADLink version or license arrangement applies to every operating system and printer revision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Understand red lights and startup errors
Red paper or trash light
Check for film stuck inside the printer. The A3+ support sequence recommends powering the machine off from both the front and rear, leaving it off for approximately 10–15 minutes, and restarting it. Do not pull forcefully on trapped film.
“2 R CR Load Position”
This A3+ error is associated with carriage or CR-lock positioning. The referenced support procedure uses a manual CR-lock bypass/reset and may require head-height adjustment. Follow the model-specific video or reseller instructions rather than improvising forceful carriage movement: Prestige A3+ error procedures.

“61 H: PW sensor error”
This may require a sensor-reset procedure and encoder-strip inspection. Some ink-level alerts may also require an ink-level reset even when the containers are full. Record the exact code and model before resetting anything.
Two red lights blinking together
Treat simultaneous blinking red lights as a potentially serious fault. Do not bypass safety sensors or continue printing without identifying the code and model. The All American Print Supply help center lists dedicated Prestige error resources.
9. Daily A3+ startup and shutdown routine
The following is a practical A3+ routine based on the published daily-maintenance instructions. Newer Prestige models may use different automated circulation and cleaning schedules.
Start of day
- Check the waste-tank level and remove any overnight clip from the waste tube.
- Check ink levels.
- Agitate or mix white ink as specified for your model.
- Confirm that dampers are seated correctly.
- Turn on the rear switch, wait approximately five seconds, then turn on the front switch.
- Perform a head cleaning.
- Run a nozzle check.
- If the check is poor, follow the model-specific waste-line procedure instead of repeatedly cleaning.
End of day
- Move the carriage using the machine’s maintenance control.
- Clean the cap and wiper.
- Clean around the printhead without touching the nozzle face.
- Pull the specified amount of ink through the waste line.
- Wet-cap the printhead with the approved cleaning solution.
- Re-engage the printhead with the capping station.
- Power off from the front, wait approximately five seconds, then power off from the rear.
- Close the covers and use an equipment cover.
See the complete Prestige daily-maintenance routine. Do not assume an A3+ should remain powered overnight simply because some L2/XL2 instructions describe automatic overnight white-ink circulation.
10. Weekly and periodic maintenance
- Inspect and clean the encoder strip using the approved material.
- Clean media rollers with a dry or lightly water-dampened lint-free cloth when instructed; do not apply alcohol to rubber components.
- Inspect the capping station and wiper for dried ink.
- Remove film residue, powder, and debris from the bed and media path.
- Empty the waste bottle before it becomes full.
- Look for dried ink beneath the carriage and around the rails.
- Keep film and powder protected from moisture and dust.
- Maintain a clean, covered operating environment.
An older Prestige manual lists 20–30°C and 45–65% relative humidity as operating guidance. Because that manual covers a different revision and is dated, confirm the environmental requirements for your current A3+ or A3+R. The older manual is available here.
11. Ink, film, cleaning supplies, and replacement parts
Use ink, film, and cleaning solution approved or confirmed as compatible with the exact printer revision and warranty arrangement. A supply change that immediately precedes pooling, bleeding, weak white, poor adhesion, or inconsistent coverage should be investigated as a compatibility problem.
- Cleaning solution and lint-free materials: Choose products intended for the printer’s maintenance procedure. Avoid tissues, abrasive materials, household solvents, and water near electrical connectors.
- Dampers: Replace only after confirming the correct part and checking the cap, pump, tubing, and printhead.
- Printhead or professional deep cleaning: Consider this after persistent nozzle failures, physical damage, a head strike, or confirmed ink-flow problems—not as the first purchase.
- Technical support: Use manufacturer or authorized reseller support for fatal errors, carriage faults, sensor failures, electrical contamination, and persistent no-flow conditions.
Dispose of waste ink and contaminated cleaning liquid according to local regulations. Never flush every Prestige printer with distilled water: the correct liquid and storage process depend on the ink system and model revision.
When to stop cleaning and contact support
Stop the troubleshooting cycle when the nozzle check does not improve after a reasonable basic sequence, when ink will not move through the waste line, when a damper leaks, when the cap or pump appears faulty, when the carriage cannot home, when the printhead has struck the film, when ink has reached electrical connectors, or when a sensor or fatal error repeatedly returns.
Send support:
- Exact model: A3, A3+, or A3+R
- Serial number
- Exact error code and light pattern
- Clear nozzle-check photograph
- Ink, film, and powder brands
- Software and operating-system details
- Date the issue began
- Steps already attempted
- Photos of dampers, ink lines, waste flow, and the affected print
This information prevents support from repeating basic checks and helps distinguish a software, supply, ink-delivery, mechanical, or printhead failure.
