Adobe Photoshop AI Assistant is now available in public beta on Photoshop for the web and mobile. First introduced for those surfaces in March 2026, it lets users describe edits in ordinary language while Photoshop applies the relevant generative or adjustment tools. Adobe has since expanded the experience, including an early beta in the separate Photoshop Beta desktop app.
It is best understood as a conversational layer over Photoshop—not a replacement for selections, layers, masks, retouching tools or careful review.
What Photoshop AI Assistant does
Instead of manually finding a tool and building a selection, you can describe a desired result in a prompt. Adobe’s documented examples include:

- Replacing or swapping a background.
- Making a sky more dramatic.
- Generating image variations.
- Resizing assets for different platforms.
- Organizing layers or finding a Photoshop tool.
- Refining a particular area without creating every selection manually.
The desktop beta documentation also lists broader assistance, including troubleshooting errors, reviewing layers, critiquing creative work, drafting captions, identifying fonts and generating color palettes. These are beta capabilities and should not be treated as guaranteed behavior for every document or workflow.
By June 2026, Adobe said the assistant had gained selective Generative Fill, upgraded selection models and a new language model. The goal is more accurate targeting of the object or area described in a prompt, but the result still depends on the image, wording and requested operation. Adobe’s June release notes describe the newer behavior.
How to use AI Assistant in Photoshop on the web
- Open Photoshop on the web.
- From the Photoshop home page, choose Upload image in the prompt box.
- Select an image.
- Enter a request in the Prompt text box.
- Choose Ask AI Assistant.
- Use a suggested prompt or enter a custom request.
- Select Send, or press Enter.
Photoshop opens the editor with the AI Assistant panel active. Review the result, then use the History panel to track or undo changes. Adobe’s complete web instructions are available in its AI Assistant help guide.
How to use it on mobile
- Open Photoshop on an iPhone or Android device.
- Choose AI Assistant on the home screen.
- Choose an image source and select the image.
- Enter a request in Describe what you want to do.
- Select a suggested prompt or write your own.
- Choose Send.
For conventional editing, switch to the Tools tab. You can also tap the microphone icon and dictate a request. See Adobe’s mobile instructions for the current interface.

AI Assistant, AI Markup and Photoshop for ChatGPT are different
Several similarly named Adobe features can be confused:
- Photoshop AI Assistant is the conversational assistant inside Photoshop.
- AI Markup is a separate Photoshop-on-the-web beta feature. You annotate or sketch the area to change, then add a prompt. This gives you more direct control over where the edit occurs.
- Generative Fill and related generative tools are Photoshop editing features that the assistant can help invoke or coordinate.
- Photoshop for ChatGPT is a separate integration for editing through ChatGPT. It is not the same as the in-app Photoshop AI Assistant.
Adobe lists Photoshop for ChatGPT separately in its web and mobile release notes.
When AI Markup is the better choice
Text-only instructions can be ambiguous. AI Markup lets you identify the target visually:
- Upload an image in Photoshop on the web.
- Choose AI markup (beta) from the contextual task bar.
- Click an area to add an annotation.
- Type the change you want.
- Optionally draw or sketch over the target.
- Choose Generate.
- Review the variations and choose Keep to apply one.
Adobe says the result is added as a new Generated Layer, keeping the workflow non-destructive. You can use multiple annotations for different areas and add a global prompt to refine the whole image. The AI Markup guide documents the process.

Where Photoshop AI Assistant is available

This means it is no longer accurate to describe AI Assistant as exclusively web- and mobile-based. Desktop access is still described as an early beta, not necessarily the same finished experience available everywhere. Adobe’s desktop overview explains how that version is accessed.
Writing prompts that produce more controlled edits
“Make the photo better” gives Photoshop too little information. A stronger prompt identifies four things:
- Target: the object or region to edit.
- Change: what should be removed, added or adjusted.
- Appearance: lighting, color, perspective or style.
- Constraints: what must remain unchanged.
For example:
“Remove the person on the far left, preserve the brick-wall texture, and match the existing afternoon shadows.”
If the edit affects too much of the image, specify the subject’s position, color, clothing or other identifying details. If that is still insufficient, use AI Markup or create a conventional selection first.

What it does not reliably replace
AI Assistant lowers the barrier to common edits, but it does not remove the need for Photoshop skills when accuracy matters. Inspect the result carefully around:
- Hair, faces, hands, fingers, jewelry and glasses.
- Text, logos and branded artwork.
- Reflections, shadows and transparent objects.
- Fences, windows, tiles, architecture and other repeated patterns.
- Overlapping subjects and fine edges.
Generated edits can look convincing at a glance while containing incorrect details or broken patterns. Exact typography, color-critical production, complex masking, detailed layer work and predictable client or print output still favor conventional Photoshop tools and manual review.
Mobile is convenient for quick edits and voice-driven requests, but web or desktop may be more appropriate for large files, keyboard-heavy production, detailed layer work, precision selections and color-managed output.

- Undo or revert. Check the History panel and return to the earlier state.
- Clarify the target. Identify the object by location, appearance or relationship to nearby subjects.
- Constrain the edit. Use AI Markup or a manual selection for a local change.
- Keep generated content separate. Preserve a Generated Layer or other reversible result where available.
- Finish manually. Use masks, healing, cloning, transforms, color adjustments or other standard tools to correct defects.
Is Photoshop AI Assistant free?
Beta availability does not establish permanent free access, unlimited generations or identical quotas across plans. Adobe’s retrieved documentation does not provide a reliable current August 2026 price, credit allowance or regional eligibility table.

Check the plan and generation information shown in your Adobe account, the app and Adobe’s current Creative Cloud plans page. A Photoshop subscription does not automatically guarantee that every beta feature, model or generation allowance is available on every surface.
Adobe has previously described separate Photoshop mobile and web plan options; its February 2025 announcement is available here. Historical promotional limits reported around the March launch should not be treated as current terms.
Privacy and professional use
Before uploading client, confidential or unreleased material, review Adobe’s current terms, content-handling policies, Firefly model disclosures and any applicable enterprise indemnification terms. Do not assume that an AI-edited image is automatically cleared for every commercial, editorial or advertising use. The relevant conditions can depend on the product, plan, model and jurisdiction.
Who should try it?
AI Assistant is a sensible experiment for beginners, photographers making routine corrections, social-media creators and Creative Cloud users who want to find tools or accelerate repetitive work. It is particularly attractive when convenience matters more than pixel-level control.
Professionals can use it as a starting point for compositing or cleanup, but should treat every result as a draft until edges, details, layers and output requirements have been checked. If you mainly create templated social graphics, Canva may be a better fit. If you want a browser editor for occasional Photoshop-style work, Photopea is worth comparing. If you primarily want image generation rather than layered compositing, Adobe Firefly is the more direct option. Affinity may appeal to users avoiding a recurring Creative Cloud subscription, although it is not a one-for-one replacement for Adobe’s generative ecosystem.
Relevant alternatives include Canva, Affinity, Photopea, Pixlr and Adobe Firefly.
