AI can make portrait editing faster, but the best results come from using it for specific problems—not applying every enhancement at once. Correct the photograph first, make local adjustments with masks, and use generative tools only when you intend to add, remove, or replace image content. Throughout, compare the edit with the original: the goal is a better photograph that still looks like the person.

What portrait enhancement means
Portrait enhancement can mean several different kinds of editing, and they do not carry the same risks:
- Technical correction: exposure, white balance, noise, sharpness, lens corrections, and resolution.
- Selective retouching: adjustments to skin, eyes, hair, clothing, or background using separate selections or masks.
- Restoration: repair of temporary blemishes, dust, distractions, or damage.
- Creative editing: a different color mood, lighting treatment, crop, or backdrop.
- Generative alteration: adding, removing, replacing, or inventing image content.
Denoising a photograph is not the same as generating a new jawline or replacing a background. Decide which kind of change you need before choosing a tool.
Start with the source image
Use the original camera file or the least-compressed export available. A RAW file generally leaves more room for exposure and color adjustments than a finished JPEG, but neither format can reliably restore information that was never captured.
Before editing, check whether the eyes are in focus, whether the face has recoverable detail in the shadows and highlights, and whether blur comes from camera movement, subject movement, or missed focus. AI may create a plausible-looking substitute for missing detail; that is not proof of what the person or scene actually looked like. Severe motion blur, clipped highlights, crushed shadows, heavy compression, or an unusable expression may be beyond a trustworthy repair.

Make a quick diagnosis: what is distracting, and what is already working? A portrait with good expression and light may need only a crop and one small cleanup. Applying every available AI feature is not a workflow.
A restrained, nondestructive workflow
- Preserve the original. Duplicate the file, create a virtual copy, or save a new version. In a layer-based editor, use separate retouching layers, masks, or smart objects so edits can be revised. Adobe’s nondestructive-editing guide explains these methods.
- Correct the whole photograph first. Set exposure, contrast, highlights and shadows, white balance, and basic color. Then correct lens distortion or chromatic aberration and straighten or crop. A color cast can make skin look wrong, so avoid judging complexion before fixing the overall color.
- Separate the subject from the background. Use individual masks for the person, skin, eyes, hair, clothing, and background where the app allows it. Separate masks keep skin softening off the eyes and prevent a background adjustment from changing the face. Lightroom’s platform-specific selection and masking tools vary across desktop, web, mobile, and Classic; see Adobe’s Lightroom updates for current feature information.
- Retouch small, temporary distractions. Remove dust, a temporary blemish, or a stray mark before considering broader skin adjustments. Keep permanent features such as freckles, scars, moles, and wrinkles unless the subject has asked for them to be changed.
- Adjust features locally and lightly. If the face needs a lift, brighten it with a mask rather than raising exposure across the whole frame. Refine eyes, hair, or clothing only where a visible problem calls for it.
- Use generative editing only for a defined task. Removing a passerby or extending a backdrop can be useful. Inspect the generated result and save a version before accepting it.
- Handle noise and sharpness near the end. Judge denoising and sharpening at the size the image will be used. Upscale only if needed, and remember that face-recovery or enlargement models may synthesize detail.
- Review and export. Check the face at 100%, the full image at fit-to-screen, and the final file at its intended social, web, or print size. Keep an editable master and export a separate delivery copy.
Skin: clean up without erasing texture
Start with temporary blemishes, dust, or a stray mark. If the skin still looks uneven, make a restrained, localized adjustment rather than smoothing the whole photograph. Lightroom documents removal and restoration brushes and a controllable skin-softening function in its product updates.

Stop before pores disappear or the face becomes uniformly smooth. Look for areas where texture has turned waxy, where edges around the nose or lips have softened, or where the skin no longer matches the neck and hands. If that happens, reduce or mask back the effect and restore some local texture or contrast.
Do not treat age, skin color, acne, scars, wrinkles, or natural facial asymmetry as defects by default. Presets and automatic retouching can impose a standardized appearance; the subject’s identity and stated preferences matter more than the preset’s idea of “perfect.”

Eyes, teeth, hair, and clothing
Eyes: A slight local exposure lift or careful sharpening around the lashes may help eyes read clearly. Preserve their natural size, shape, and direction. Avoid turning the whites pure white or adding conspicuous catchlights. At 100%, check for mismatched irises, doubled highlights, and edges that look painted.
Teeth: If lighting has made them unusually yellow, a small, masked color correction can help. Keep natural variation and avoid bleaching them to a flat white. Generative replacement is especially risky because it can create incorrect tooth shapes or extra edges.
Hair: Removing one or two distracting flyaways may be straightforward; rebuilding a large section is not. Inspect fine strands against the background for halos, abrupt cutoffs, or repeated patterns. Glasses and jewelry also deserve close attention because reflections and thin edges are difficult for automated selections.
Clothing: Small corrections such as removing lint or correcting a color cast are usually safer than reconstructing patterned fabric. Review seams, buttons, jewelry, and repeated motifs for warped or duplicated detail.

For group portraits, check each face separately. One global smoothing or brightening setting can affect people with different skin tones and lighting in inappropriate ways.
Fix lighting with masks before replacing it
When a face is slightly dark, lift it with a subtle subject or face mask. Reduce an attention-grabbing highlight on the forehead or cheek locally rather than flattening all contrast. If the background competes with the person, a modest darkening can help; avoid making the face dramatically brighter than the scene unless that is an intentional creative look.
Photoshop’s current feature overview lists generative tools including Harmonize, which Adobe describes as adjusting lighting, color, shadows, and detail to help integrate content into a background. Adobe also announced maskable Clarity, Dehaze, and Grain adjustment layers in January 2026 Photoshop updates. Availability can depend on the current app release and feature rollout; these are vendor descriptions, not independent guarantees of a natural result.
Remove distractions and change backgrounds carefully
AI removal can be useful for a small object, litter, a cable, or an unwanted passerby. In Photoshop, Adobe describes selecting an area and choosing Generative Fill from the Contextual Task Bar; leaving the prompt blank can remove content. The current Photoshop feature list also includes Generative Remove, Generate Background, and Generative Expand. For a cleaner removal, select the whole object and include a cast shadow or reflection if those should disappear too. Generate more than one variation when available, then inspect edges, repeating textures, shadows, and straight lines. Brickwork, railings, window frames, tiles, horizons, and text are easy to distort; use conventional healing, cloning, or manual compositing when geometry or lettering must stay accurate.
Topaz’s Remove V2 guidance recommends masking the whole object, including shadows and reflections, removing separate objects individually, and keeping a mask below one-quarter of the total image area. The same documentation says Remove V2 runs locally on Windows and Mac, with specified compatibility exceptions, and notes that the operation can lock or flatten earlier enhancements. That local-processing statement applies to the documented Remove workflow; do not assume every feature in every application processes locally.

A replacement backdrop or expanded crop can help with a headshot or a required aspect ratio. Check hair, ears, glasses, shoulders, jewelry reflections, perspective, depth of field, and shadow direction. A background that looks more convincing than the subject—or has different light and color—will make the composite feel false.

Denoising can make a high-ISO portrait cleaner, but too much removes skin and hair texture. Sharpening can make a slightly soft image read better, but it cannot repair severe motion blur or a major focus miss. Apply these effects selectively when possible, and judge them at the intended output size rather than only zoomed in.

Face recovery and upscaling may invent plausible eyelashes, pores, hair, or teeth. Treat that as detail synthesis, not guaranteed recovery of the original person’s actual features.
A practical order is to finish exposure and color, clean up distractions, denoise as needed, sharpen selectively, upscale only if the delivery requires it, and apply final output sharpening after resizing. Compare the face with the source before keeping a generated or recovered detail.
Choosing a tool for the job

Choose by workflow, not feature count. Ask whether you need RAW support, cataloging, batch processing, pixel-level masks, cloud or local processing, reversible edits, or generative credits. For occasional casual edits, a free tier or trial may be enough, but check for watermarks, export limits, or upload restrictions. Pricing and plan terms vary by country and change over time, so check the vendor’s current plan page before subscribing.
When an AI edit has gone too far
Keep a before-and-after comparison visible while editing, then inspect at both 100% and normal viewing size. Revert or mask back the change if you see:

- Plastic skin, repeated pores, or blurred facial edges.
- Eyes that are misaligned, too bright, or no longer the subject’s natural shape.
- Halos around hair, broken glasses, strange jewelry, or impossible strands.
- Warped architecture, repeated background texture, inconsistent shadows, or altered text.
- Extra teeth or fingers, double edges, or a face that no longer resembles the original.
- Noise or sharpness that differs abruptly between the subject and background.
First reduce the effect or paint the mask away from the problem area. If a generative edit is flawed, choose another variation, refine the selection, or undo it and use manual retouching. Smaller, separate selections usually make problems easier to isolate than one large generative request.
Privacy, consent, and editorial integrity
Before uploading a confidential client portrait, private family photo, identity image, or unreleased campaign, check the service’s retention and training-use policies, security, data-processing terms, and storage geography. App names alone do not tell you whether a particular feature runs locally or in the cloud.
For commercial work, confirm the subject’s consent, client agreement, and applicable usage terms. A provider’s statement about its model training or licensing does not settle every question about the edited image or its publication. Whether an edit needs disclosure depends on the assignment, publication, client contract, platform, and local rules. Documentary, journalistic, legal, forensic, and historical work calls for stricter boundaries: distinguish correction from fabrication and preserve the unaltered source.
Export and final checks
Keep a high-quality editable master, then make a separate export for delivery. Resize to the actual web, social, or print requirement and inspect the result at that size. Use JPEG for many web and social deliveries; use a suitable high-quality format such as TIFF when the workflow calls for a larger, editable or print-oriented file. Choose the color profile and compression required by the destination rather than assuming one setting fits every platform. Retain the original and project file so you can revise the edit later.
Before delivery, check the face, hair edges, background geometry, and overall color once more. If the portrait looks polished only when viewed at a zoomed-in crop, but strange at normal size—or recognizable only after you forget the original—reduce the effect.
