In Photoshop desktop, zooming changes only the document’s on-screen view—it does not enlarge, shrink, crop, or resample the image. For the fastest controls, press Ctrl++ or Command++ to zoom in, Ctrl+- or Command+- to zoom out, Ctrl/Command+0 to fit the image in the window, and Ctrl/Command+1 to view it at 100%.
Quick Photoshop zoom shortcuts
These shortcuts refer to Photoshop desktop. Shortcuts can differ in Photoshop on the web, Photoshop Elements, older releases, and non-US keyboard layouts.
| Action | Windows | macOS |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom in | Ctrl + + | Command + + |
| Zoom out | Ctrl + - | Command + - |
| Fit image in window | Ctrl + 0 | Command + 0 |
| View at 100% | Ctrl + 1 | Command + 1 |
| View at 200% | Ctrl + 2 | Command + 2 |
| Temporarily use the Hand tool | Hold Spacebar | |
| Temporary Zoom In tool | Ctrl + Spacebar | Command + Spacebar |
| Temporary Zoom Out tool | Alt + Spacebar | Option + Spacebar |
Adobe’s official Photoshop shortcut reference is the best place to check or customize commands for your installed version.
Use the Zoom tool
- Press Z, or select the magnifying-glass icon in the toolbar.
- Click the part of the image you want to enlarge. Photoshop advances to the next preset magnification and normally centers the view around the clicked point.
- To zoom out, choose Zoom Out in the options bar, or hold Alt on Windows or Option on macOS while clicking.
- To enlarge a particular region, drag a rectangle around it with the Zoom tool.
Hold Spacebar while dragging the zoom rectangle if you need to reposition the marquee. Select another tool when you are finished so clicks do not continue changing the view.

Continuous zooming and Scrubby Zoom
With the Zoom tool selected, click and hold on the canvas for continuous zooming if your version supports it. You can also enable Scrubby Zoom in the options bar and drag right to zoom in or left to zoom out. Animated or continuous zoom behavior can depend on the Photoshop release, graphics hardware, and enabled performance preferences; older Adobe documentation connects some animated zoom features with GPU/OpenGL support.
Adobe documents the Zoom tool and its viewing controls in View images in Photoshop.
Zoom from the View menu or percentage field
Choose View > Zoom In or View > Zoom Out when you prefer menus over shortcuts. Use View > 100% for a pixel-level view or View > Fit on Screen to see the whole document, where those labels are available in your release.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor an exact magnification, click the percentage shown in the document window’s status bar, enter a value such as 25%, 50%, 100%, or 200%, and press Enter. This is useful when you need to compare edits at the same viewing scale.
Use the Navigator panel
- Choose Window > Navigator.
- Click the + or − buttons, or drag the zoom slider.
- Enter a precise percentage in the Navigator’s zoom field.
- Drag the colored view-area box over the thumbnail to move to another part of the image.
Navigator is particularly helpful with large documents: it shows where you are even when high magnification puts most of the canvas outside the document window.
Pan around after zooming
When the image is larger than the available window, hold Spacebar and drag the canvas. This temporarily activates the Hand tool without interrupting the tool you are using. You can also select the Hand tool directly, drag the canvas, or move the view-area box in Navigator.

Choose the right zoom level
- Fit on Screen: Best for judging the overall composition and balance.
- 25%–50%: Useful for seeing the image as a whole while retaining some detail.
- 100%: Best for checking pixel-level sharpness. Adobe describes this as the most accurate pixel view because one image pixel corresponds to one monitor pixel, although the final appearance still varies by display.
- 200% or higher: Useful for cleaning individual pixels, masks, selections, and small artifacts.
For a reliable final check, use Fit on Screen for composition and 100% for detail. Double-clicking the Zoom tool also returns a desktop Photoshop document to 100% according to Adobe’s viewing guidance.

| Action | Changes the view? | Changes image pixels? |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom in or out | Yes | No |
| Image > Image Size | Not directly | Yes, potentially |
| Image > Canvas Size | Not directly | Changes the canvas area, not necessarily the image pixels |
| Crop tool | Not directly | Changes framing and can remove pixels, depending on the settings |
If you need to change pixel dimensions, resolution, or print dimensions, use Image > Image Size. Zooming alone never improves a low-resolution source or permanently reduces its quality.
How to zoom around a particular point
Clicking with the Zoom tool is the most direct way to focus on a feature: Photoshop centers the view around the clicked location. Keyboard zooming generally works around the current canvas focus or center. For more deliberate navigation, change the percentage first and then reposition the view with Navigator or Spacebar-drag.

Desktop Photoshop also includes preferences such as Zoom Clicked Point To Center and Zoom With Scroll Wheel. Their location and exact wording can vary by release. On supported systems, a mouse wheel or trackpad pinch may zoom when the relevant behavior is enabled. On macOS, Adobe documents gesture controls under Photoshop > Preferences > Interface; disable gestures there if accidental zooming is a problem.

The plus shortcut does nothing
- Click the image canvas so Photoshop—not a dialog, text field, or another application—has focus.
- Remember that some keyboards require Shift to produce the plus sign, and layouts may use a different physical key combination.
- Press Z and click with the Zoom tool.
- Use View > Zoom In or the status-bar percentage field.
- Check Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts on Windows, or the equivalent keyboard-shortcut command on macOS, in case the shortcut was customized.
If you are using Photoshop on the web, Adobe lists the same basic zoom combinations—Ctrl/Command plus + or -, plus shortcuts for Fit, 100%, and 200%—but its interface and commands should not be assumed identical to desktop Photoshop. See Adobe’s Photoshop on the web shortcut list.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The image looks blurry or blocky
At magnifications above 100%, Photoshop enlarges the display of existing pixels, so edges can look soft or pixelated. That does not mean the file has degraded. Return to 100% for pixel-accurate inspection or Fit on Screen to judge the image as a complete composition.

The canvas moves unexpectedly
You may be holding Spacebar, which activates the Hand tool, or you may have dragged Navigator’s view-area box. A click-to-center preference can also reposition the view around the pointer.
The wrong action happens when you click
Pressing Z selects the Zoom tool, but clicking with another tool can paint, select, move, or retouch instead. Confirm the magnifying-glass tool is active and check the options bar for Zoom In rather than Zoom Out.
Navigator is missing
Reopen it with Window > Navigator. If panels or the workspace are otherwise hidden, use Photoshop’s workspace controls to reset the workspace; the exact reset wording varies between releases.

Zoom controls are disabled
Photoshop disables Zoom In or Zoom Out when the document has reached its supported minimum or maximum viewing magnification. Adobe’s desktop documentation identifies a maximum of 3200% and a minimum display size of one pixel, but limits can vary with the release or document context. A disabled control may therefore indicate a viewing limit rather than a software failure.
