The cleanest way to change a background without losing a product’s grounding shadow is to separate the object from the shadow. Put a masked object cutout on top, keep a duplicate of the original photo beneath it in Multiply mode, mask that duplicate so only the shadow remains, and place the replacement background at the bottom. This preserves an editable, adjustable shadow instead of asking a one-click background remover to guess what is foreground.
The layer stack that works
TOP Object cutout (Normal, layer mask) MIDDLE Original photo used as a shadow (Multiply, masked) BOTTOM Replacement background
A normal subject-selection mask usually removes everything outside the object—including a soft cast shadow. Adobe’s product-shot workflow likewise combines a layer mask with a blend mode to retain shadows while replacing the background (Adobe’s tutorial). Keep the document layered and save a PSD so masks and adjustments remain editable (Adobe’s compositing guidance).
Best-case images
This method is most predictable when the original surface is white or light gray, the shadow is darker than that surface, the object has reasonably clear edges, and the replacement background has compatible perspective and lighting. Colored or textured surfaces, reflective objects, transparent materials, and shadows crossing other objects need more manual work.
Step-by-step: the Multiply method
1. Preserve the source
Open the photograph and duplicate its layer (Layer > Duplicate Layer). Rename the working layers, for example Object – mask, Original – shadow, and New background. Do not flatten the file.

2. Add the new background
Import an image with File > Place Embedded, or create a Solid Color or gradient fill layer. Photoshop’s current replacement tools also include imported backgrounds and, in supported versions, Generate Background (Adobe documentation). Generated content is designed to match a scene’s lighting and perspective; it does not guarantee preservation of the exact photographed shadow. Put this layer below the original photograph.
3. Make a clean object cutout
Use Remove Background from the Contextual Task Bar, Select Subject, Object Selection, Quick Selection, or the Pen Tool. For hard-edged commercial products, the Pen Tool often gives the most controllable contour. Refine soft edges with Select and Mask. Create a layer mask rather than deleting pixels: white reveals, black conceals, and gray creates partial transparency. Inspect the mask at 100%, especially around contact points, hair, fur, glass, and translucent edges. Adobe’s standard workflow uses subject selection, a mask, and a new background layer (reference).
4. Reveal the photographed shadow
Place the duplicated original between the masked object and the new background. Set its blend-mode menu at the top of the Layers panel to Multiply. On a light neutral background, white contributes little visible darkening while gray shadow pixels remain, so the replacement background shows through.

Multiply is a visual shortcut, not literal transparency extraction. Gray, colored, or contaminated pixels from the old surface can still tint the new background.
5. Mask the original layer to the shadow
- Add a black mask to the original Multiply layer.
- Select a soft round brush and paint white over the cast and contact shadow.
- Use low brush opacity for a gradual falloff; keep the mask slightly wider than the visible edge.
- Hide the object itself on this layer. The clean object layer above should supply those pixels, preventing double darkening.
Separate contact shadow (the darkest area directly beneath the object) from the softer cast shadow. They can share a layer initially, but separate masks or layers make later adjustments easier.
6. Match the new scene
Lower the shadow layer’s opacity—often somewhere around 20–80% is a useful starting range, not a rule. Use Curves or Levels to control density, and a clipped Solid Color or adjustment layer to warm or cool the shadow. Slight blur, opacity reduction, or a subtle warp may be needed if the new surface differs in scale or perspective. A physically believable shadow must agree with the replacement scene’s light direction; retaining the original is not always the most realistic choice.

More controlled extraction methods
Blend If
Double-click the shadow layer to open Layer Style. Under Blend If: Gray, move the white slider for the underlying layer until the light surface fades. Alt/Option-drag the slider to split it and soften the transition. Blend If is useful when the shadow is separated by tone, but it can remove highlights from a white product and is rarely a complete solution (Adobe’s compositing explanation). Combine it with a mask.
The Tool Desk

Choose Select > Color Range, sample the light background, adjust Fuzziness, and turn the result into a mask. This can work on a clean white studio sweep, but pale product highlights may be selected too. Check the object layer separately before committing.
Channels and luminosity
Inspect the Red, Green, and Blue channels and choose the one with the strongest separation between object and shadow. Use Levels or Curves to increase contrast, then convert the tonal result into a mask on a duplicate shadow layer. This is slower but useful for faint shadows on white.

When Multiply fails
- Colored or gray background: Multiply transfers that color or darkness. Tighten the mask, neutralize the shadow, use Blend If or channel extraction, or rebuild it.
- White or reflective object: Automatic tools may erase highlights. Trace the contour manually and treat highlights separately.
- Glass, smoke, hair, or translucent edges: Use channel-based masks, Select and Mask, and low-opacity manual painting; do not expect a standard hard mask to preserve every edge.
- Different light direction or horizon: Lower the original shadow’s opacity or replace it with a new, perspective-aware shadow.
Rebuilding a shadow
If the original shadow conflicts with the new scene, create a soft dark-gray or black layer beneath the object, blur it, reduce opacity, and transform or warp it to follow the surface. Use a small, denser contact shadow plus a larger, softer cast shadow. The original can remain as a low-opacity tonal reference rather than the final effect.
Export correctly
Save the layered master as PSD. Export a JPEG when the background is final and opaque. A transparent PNG is a separate problem: a Multiply layer over white is not a transparent shadow. You must convert the shadow to partial transparency or build it on a transparency-aware layer, then test the PNG over several light and dark backgrounds. White contamination can otherwise appear as a rectangle or halo.

“The new background is gray or dirty.”
The full original is still visible in Multiply. Add a black mask, reveal only the shadow, reduce opacity, and inspect for a broad halo.

“The object is too dark.”
Object pixels are present on both layers. Hide the object area on the Multiply layer and keep the clean cutout above it.
“The shadow vanished.”
Restore the duplicate original, set it to Multiply, and paint white on its mask over the shadow. Increase contrast with Curves if it is too close in tone to the new background.
“There is a white or colored halo.”
Refine the object mask in Select and Mask, remove contaminated edge pixels carefully, and avoid excessive mask expansion.

Desktop versus web Photoshop
Photoshop on the web offers Remove Background, imported images, fills, gradients, and masks (current web workflow). Menu names and available AI features vary by edition and release. For detailed shadow extraction, channel work, and repeatable PSD production, desktop Photoshop provides the fuller Layers, blend-mode, mask, and adjustment controls.
The Bottom Line
For an editable, convincing result, never treat background removal as the whole job: isolate the object on one masked layer, preserve the original shadow on a separate Multiply-based layer, and judge whether that shadow still matches the replacement scene’s lighting. If it does not, rebuild it.
