Convincing eyes come from the way the eyeball sits in the socket and the eyelids overlap it—not from carving an almond-shaped outline. Establish the orbital forms, place the sphere in depth, build thick lids around it, and check the result from several angles before adding creases or color.
What makes a sculpted eye convincing?
An eye reads as part of a face when its forms connect: the eyeball sits within an orbital cavity; the upper and lower lids wrap over the sphere; and the socket transitions into the brow, nasal bridge, cheek and temple. The visible opening is created by the lids’ position around the eyeball, not drawn onto a flat surface.
- Form: A contained eyeball, a readable socket, and lid thickness.
- Overlap: The upper lid covers part of the sphere while the lower lid supports it. Skin turns around the eye rather than ending in a hard groove.
- Direction: Both eyes share a deliberate gaze target, while lid exposure and brow position suit the expression.
- Surface: Primary planes remain clear; creases and skin detail reinforce them instead of substituting for them.
Start with the head’s brow ridge, cheek plane, nasal bridge and temple. Work from large forms to small ones: face planes, orbit and eyeball, lids, corners, expression, then fine detail. Maxon’s ZBrush creature tutorial likewise recommends broad changes at lower subdivision levels and finer work after increasing mesh density.

Set up the ZBrush scene
Use a separate eyeball SubTool as a guide
For a straightforward sculpting workflow, keep the head and eyeballs as separate SubTools while establishing the forms. In desktop ZBrush, use Tool > SubTool > Append to add a Sphere3D, convert it to a Polymesh 3D when prompted, then scale and move it into the socket. Duplicate or append the second sphere and position it to match the intended gaze. Maxon demonstrates appending, converting and positioning a sphere in its creature tutorial.
Separate spheres are easy to move, scale or hide while sculpting the socket. They are guides, not a substitute for continuous eyelid forms. ZBrush’s SubTool documentation describes SubTools as separate objects; select the relevant one or use visibility and Solo controls when working. Interface details can differ between desktop ZBrush, ZBrushCore and ZBrush for iPad.
Prepare reference and save
Use front, side and three-quarter references where possible, including relaxed and expressive eyes. A single photograph can be misleading because of perspective, lens distortion, makeup, lashes or lighting. ZBrush’s reference-image tools include Grids, Spotlight, Image Plane and See-through modes. Save a project before major edits; the documented Windows shortcut is Ctrl+S (use the corresponding Command shortcut on macOS), as described in Interface & Navigation.
Place the eyeballs in the orbit
Position is a three-dimensional problem. Use an orthographic view to make controlled placement, then toggle perspective with P to judge projection; the shortcut and placement workflow appear in Maxon’s creature tutorial.

- Side: Check how deeply each sphere sits in the socket.
- Three-quarter: Look for an eye that bulges forward or disappears into the skull.
- Top and bottom: Catch depth or orientation errors hidden in a straight-on view.
A sphere too far forward can make the eyes look bulging and leave the lids stretched. Too far back can create an unintentionally hollow or tired appearance. Confirm that both eyes aim toward the same target; mismatched aim can make a clean sculpt look crossed or unfocused. Use symmetry to establish placement, then make restrained adjustments rather than assuming a perfect mirror is the final design.

Sculpt the socket before the lid lines
At a low subdivision level, establish the brow ridge, upper and lower orbital boundaries, nasal bridge, cheekbone plane and temple. The socket should contain the eyeball; it is not simply a thin line around it. Check the silhouette and side view before raising detail. If the face looks flat, strengthen the relationship between the brow and cheek around the sphere rather than drawing a darker outline.
Use a large Move brush for broad placement changes and Clay or Clay Buildup to establish surrounding masses. Maxon’s sculpting workflow discusses these brushes alongside Inflate and Pinch for form development and refinement. Keep the broad planes legible; do not smooth away the socket structure.
Build eyelids as overlapping masses
Shape the lids around the sphere, not as two raised tubes. The upper lid commonly carries more visual weight than the lower lid, but that is a useful tendency rather than a fixed anatomical rule. The upper lid overlaps the eyeball and transitions toward the brow. The lower lid supports the sphere and blends into the cheek; it can have a readable rim without becoming a thick cord.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Establish the upper mass. Use Move or a broad Clay brush to bring the upper lid over the sphere. Make the visible opening a result of lid placement.
- Add lower-lid support. Build a softer roll beneath the sphere and blend its outer plane into the cheek.
- Check contact. From the side and three-quarter views, make sure the lids turn around and meet or nearly meet the eyeball rather than floating in front of it.
- Refine the opening. Adjust the inner, middle and outer portions so the opening is not a uniformly wide graphic almond.
- Only then add a crease. The fold should follow the lid structure and remain secondary to its volume.
Use a broad brush at low intensity when correcting masses. Smooth transitions selectively; smoothing the entire eye can flatten the planes and erase the thickness that makes the lids read as skin.
Shape the inner and outer corners
The inner and outer canthi connect the lids to the rest of the face and keep the eye from reading as a generic cutout.

Inner corner
Blend the meeting point of the lids into the nasal bridge. The tear-duct region is a small form within this transition, not a separate bright triangle. Keep the lid rim distinct from the deeper socket without making the corner a sharp notch unless the design calls for one.
Outer corner
Taper the lids toward the temple and lateral orbital plane. The transition should feel continuous, with its shape adjusted for the character and expression rather than copied as an identical hook on both sides.

Age, facial type and design language matter. An elderly character may have heavier folds; a childlike or stylized character may use larger eyes or simplified lids. “Convincing” means that the shapes are coherent with the intended character, not that every design uses one universal eye shape.
Use symmetry, masks and subdivision deliberately
Build symmetrically, then introduce controlled asymmetry
Press X to toggle symmetry in documented ZBrush workflows. It helps establish eye height, spacing, orbit volume and primary lid masses. Once those forms are stable, turn it off and consider small differences in lid height, opening, fullness or corner position to suit the face and expression. Maxon lists X in its navigation documentation and shortcut reference. Shortcuts may be customized.
Mask to protect adjacent forms
Hold Ctrl while painting to create a mask, and Ctrl+Alt to remove mask areas while painting. In the documented workflow, Ctrl+I inverts a mask; use Tool > Masking > Clear to clear it. Masks can protect the eyeball, brow or cheek while you work on a neighboring form. BlurMask softens a mask boundary. See Maxon’s Masking guide and shortcut reference. A very low-resolution mesh may make mask boundaries harder to see or control, as noted in the ZModeler masking documentation.

Use PolyGroups when isolation helps
Shift+F toggles PolyFrame; Ctrl+W can create a PolyGroup from a mask, and Ctrl+Shift-click can isolate a PolyGroup in the documented selection workflow. This can help inspect or isolate eye-region geometry, but it does not replace careful sculpting. Maxon explains these controls in Masking & Selection.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Match the detail to the subdivision level
Use lower levels for the orbit, eyeball placement and broad face planes; medium levels for lids, thickness and corners; higher levels for restrained creases and small folds. Increase subdivision with Tool > Geometry > Divide or Ctrl+D; navigate levels with D and Shift+D. Maxon’s creature tutorial explains broad-to-fine subdivision work. If a narrow crease becomes lumpy, return to the larger forms or add suitable mesh density instead of carving harder into insufficient geometry.
Add creases only after the forms work
A crease is convincing when it follows an actual fold. A deep, uniform groove around the eye makes the sculpt look outlined, especially if the lid masses beneath it are flat. A crease-capable brush such as DamStandard can define selected folds at a higher subdivision level; use it sparingly, then soften an over-strong mark. Pinch can tighten an edge after its volume is established, but it will not fix a misplaced lid.
Before adding wrinkles or pores, inspect the eye with detail temporarily ignored or softened. If the eye only reads under a sharp line, rebuild the overlap and volume first. Fine detail cannot compensate for a misplaced sphere or weak socket.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Shape expression and gaze
Eyes change with the character’s state. Upper-lid exposure, lower-lid compression and brow position all affect whether a face feels relaxed, alert, tired, angry or smiling. Aim both eyeballs at a specific target, then check how the lids sit for that gaze. A slight difference between the two sides can add life, but accidental imbalance can make the face look misaligned.

Test more than a neutral pose if the character will be posed or animated: try a squint, upward and downward gaze, a cheek-raised smile and a closed-eye pose. A static presentation sculpt can be tuned for one view; a character that must perform needs the eye region to remain coherent through deformation.
Paint and shade after the sculpt reads
Keep the iris, pupil, sclera, cornea and tear duct as distinct visual decisions. Use iris and pupil placement to support gaze rather than distract from faulty lid placement. The sclera need not be pure white; subtle tonal variation can suit the character and lighting. A separate corneal or tear-film layer may help a rendered eye, but its implementation depends on the renderer and material workflow.
For polypaint with a sculpting brush, turn off ZAdd and ZSub, then turn on RGB. Maxon documents this setup in Using Sculpting Brushes. ZBrush supports painting directly on high-resolution models without first requiring UVs, according to the ZBrush product page; a production pipeline may still require UVs and texture maps later. Inspect the result under soft and alternate lighting so material or color does not hide weak form.
Troubleshoot common eye-sculpt problems
| What you see | What to check and change |
|---|---|
| Bulging or “bug” eyes | Check the sphere against the orbit from the side. Move it deeper or reduce its scale if appropriate, strengthen brow and cheek containment, and review how much sclera the lids expose. Confirm that perspective is not exaggerating projection. |
| Floating eyelids | Inspect side and three-quarter views. Bring the lid masses toward the sphere, deepen the surrounding socket where needed, and close gaps at the inner and outer corners. |
| A flat face with an outlined eye | Return to the brow, socket and cheek planes. Replace the graphic groove with overlapping lid volumes that turn around the eyeball. |
| A sharp, cartoon-like crease | Soften or undo the deepest groove, rebuild the lid mass, and use a broader brush at lower intensity. Judge it under softer lighting. |
| Crossed or unfocused gaze | Check both sphere orientations and set a shared target. Recheck in front and three-quarter views. |
| A technically neat but lifeless expression | Adjust gaze, upper-lid exposure, lower-lid support and brow relationship. Test a small, intentional asymmetry. |
| Lumpy detail or poor mask control | Return to a lower subdivision level for broad corrections. Add density before narrow detail; do not try to force a crisp crease into an insufficiently dense mesh. |
Plan for a still sculpt or an animated character
A still image can tolerate camera-specific adjustments, simplified or hidden topology and more aggressive sculpted creases. A production character needs eyelids and surrounding forms that deform predictably, appropriate edge flow, eye rotation and lid follow, and possibly corrective shapes or blendshapes for squints and closure. Separate eyeball SubTools are convenient guides during sculpting, but they do not by themselves provide production-ready eyelid topology.
Quick Recap
Final eye-sculpt check
- The eyeballs sit within the sockets in front, side and three-quarter views.
- Both eyes aim toward the intended target.
- The lids overlap and wrap around the spheres, with visible thickness.
- The upper and lower lids connect to the corners and surrounding face rather than reading as tubes or a cutout.
- Creases support the underlying forms instead of outlining the eye.
- The result remains convincing in neutral and relevant expressive poses.
- Surface detail, color and lighting reveal the forms rather than conceal them.
