Yes—you can use collected dog fur to make a small needle-felted replica, though it may not felt exactly like sheep’s wool and the result is not guaranteed to match every coat or pet. You’ll need clean, dry fur, a felting needle, a foam work surface and patience; the likeness comes from shaping and details such as eye spacing, markings and ears.
What you need for a fur-based sculpture
For a small three-dimensional figure, gather:
- Clean, dry fur from your pet, with dirt and debris picked out.
- A felting needle and a foam pad or other suitable work surface.
- Scissors and clear reference photos showing your pet from several angles.
- Optional core wool to help build the shape, plus eyes and pipe cleaner or wire if your design needs them.
Make:’s project by Brookelynn Morris also uses small amounts of black and brown wool, pipe cleaners and scissors. Morris describes dog hair as workable “just like sheep’s wool,” then qualifies that with “Well, not exactly like wool, but close enough!” Treat that as a practical project description rather than a guarantee about how every kind of fur will behave. How much fur to save
There is no universal amount: the design and finished size matter. Make: estimates about five large, dense handfuls for its project. A separate 2026 specialist tutorial says roughly two handfuls are enough to get started. These are estimates for different projects, not interchangeable requirements. A practical sequence for building the figure
- Choose a clear reference. Collect photos that show the face, side profile, markings and ear shape. A single front-facing photo may not show the proportions you need for a three-dimensional figure.
- Build a firm core. Use the needle to compact fur, or optional core wool, into the body shape on the foam pad. Work gradually and rotate the form so it develops evenly.
- Make and attach the head. Shape the head separately if that gives you better control, then needle-felt it to the body. Keep checking its size and position against the reference.
- Add the identifying features. Shape the muzzle and ears, then place markings and eyes carefully. Small differences in eye spacing and ear shape can change whether the figure reads as your pet.
- Finish the coat. The specialist tutorial describes attaching loose fur tufts as a surface coat without felting them completely flat. Adjust the amount and placement to suit the coat you are trying to represent.
Needle felting takes practice, especially when you move from a basic animal shape to a specific face. The needle is sharp: keep fingers clear of its path and work over the pad. For another documented skill reference, Ashford’s miniature Schnauzer head project uses 36-, 38- and 40-gauge needles, glass eyes and a foam or rice mat, and is classed as experienced beginner to early intermediate. Choose between a 3D replica and a 2D portrait
A 3D sculpture made with your pet’s fur is not the only way to make a felted portrait. Craftsy’s intermediate cat-portrait tutorial is a two-dimensional wool-felting project: it calls for a high-resolution pet image, wool felt sheet, mat, size 40 triangle needle, hoop and wool batting. It is useful for learning how to translate markings and facial features from a reference, but it is not evidence that this workflow uses the owner’s fur. Other routes if you want help or a closer likeness
Start with a beginner kit
A breed-themed kit can provide a guided first project, but it may use supplied wool rather than your pet’s fur. The Penguin Random House Retail sell sheet for Blue Star Press’s Little Felted Friends series lists five beginner dog kits, each with wool, felting needles, two glass eyes, a pipe cleaner, foam pad and instructions. Its 2023 sell sheet listed a publisher MSRP of $14.95 US / $19.95 Canada; that is historical pricing, not a current price. View the publisher sell sheet.
Ask a custom maker about your fur
If you want an artisan-made portrait or memorial, ask the maker directly whether they will incorporate supplied fur, what photos they need, and whether you can review the likeness before completion. Wool Felted Pet says its pieces are needle-felted from wool and that actual pet fur, ashes, whiskers or teeth may be incorporated on request. The studio also cautions that screen differences, wool texture and technical limits can prevent a 100% exact match.
