A baseball stitch is a hand-sewn, lace-like seam that can draw the edges of a slit or tear together when the fabric is still present and the edges can meet. For a basic fabric repair, mark alternating points on both sides, sew back and forth across the opening, and tighten each stitch just enough to close it without puckering the material.
When a baseball stitch is suitable
This guide covers mending a tear in ordinary fabric—not sewing a baseball cover or repairing an inflatable boat. The stitch alternates across two edges to form a visible zigzag or lacing pattern. It works best when little or no material is missing and the edges can be aligned. If a section of fabric is gone, lacing cannot replace it; a patch or another repair method may be needed.
How well the repair holds depends on the fabric, the tear, and the strain the area will take. The available guidance does not establish a universally best thread, needle shape, or stitch spacing for every fabric.

What you need
- A hand-sewing needle
- Thread appropriate to the fabric and repair
- Scissors for trimming loose threads and the finished thread ends
- A ruler or measuring tape and a marking tool, if you want to mark evenly spaced stitch points
The iFixit fabric-repair guide uses about 24 inches (62 cm) of thread for one pass as an example, not a fixed requirement; the length you need depends on the tear and sewing technique. Its double-row example uses about 48 inches (120 cm), likewise as an example.

How to sew a baseball stitch in fabric
- Prepare the tear. Trim loose threads and gently flatten any distortion. Align the two edges without stretching them. If repairing a sleeve or trouser leg, put a barrier between the fabric layers so the needle does not accidentally sew the two sides together.
- Mark the stitch points. Make staggered marks along both sides of the tear, about 1/8–1/4 inch (3–6 mm) from each raw edge. Set the first and last marks level with the ends of the tear. Keeping the marks opposite one another helps create an even lacing pattern.
- Thread and anchor the needle. Thread the hand-sewing needle. Begin on the back of the fabric and secure the thread with a knot.
- Sew alternately across the tear. Bring the needle up from the back at a mark on one side, then take it across to the corresponding mark on the other side. Continue alternating from edge to edge, bringing the needle up inside the tear as you work. After each stitch, pull the thread gently so the edges move toward each other.
- Control the tension. Aim for the edges to meet while the fabric stays flat. Pulling too hard can pucker the material; leaving the stitches too loose can leave the opening unclosed. Adjust the thread as you go rather than waiting until the end.
- Finish on the back. At the far end, secure the thread on the back, check that the stitches are evenly spaced and the opening is closed without puckering, then trim loose ends.
For a more reinforced fabric seam
For heavier fabric or a repair expected to take more tension, iFixit describes a double baseball-stitch variation: sew one row, then work back in the opposite direction, placing the return stitches between the first row’s stitches. The result resembles interlaced lacing and can be adjusted by hand. This is one documented reinforcement option, not a guarantee of durability for every fabric or tear.

Inflatable PVC
A baseball stitch has a separate, manufacturer-specific use on inflatable boats. AIRE’s owner manual describes stitching a tear in the boat’s outer PVC to prepare it for a permanent welded repair. Its instructions call for deflating the chamber, unzipping it to access the tear, and keeping the needle away from the inner chamber; after sewing, the manual says to cover the area with duct tape or Tear-Aid. Follow the manual for the specific boat rather than applying ordinary fabric-mending steps to inflatable PVC. AIRE owner manual

Technical seam guidance
The U.S. War Department Air Corps manual TM 1-440 lists baseball among hand-sewn seams and specifies six stitches per inch, with no fewer than four per inch, and two half-hitch knots to lock each end. Check the repair before using the item
- The two edges meet without a gap.
- The fabric lies flat rather than gathering around the seam.
- The stitches and end knots are secure.
- The repaired area is appropriate for the material and the strain it will face; use a different repair if fabric is missing or the edges cannot be brought together.
