MattoBoard announced a $2 million seed round on February 11, 2025, led by Acrobator Ventures with participation from Home Depot Ventures and Masco. The money was intended to launch Design Stream, expand MattoBoard’s materials database, add supplier partnerships and build a larger online catalog for interior products. By August 2026, Design Stream is described by MattoBoard as a broader AI concepting workspace—not just the visual-search tool announced in 2025.
What MattoBoard is
MattoBoard is a web-based design workspace built around 3D mood boards and virtual material samples. Instead of placing flat product photos in a collage, its boards are designed to show how finishes respond to light, shadow, reflections and viewing angle. The intended users include interior designers, architects, decorators, suppliers and teams preparing client presentations.

MattoBoard’s pitch is to compress the fragmented process of searching supplier sites, saving inspiration, requesting samples, assembling boards and translating a visual idea into a product a client can evaluate.

The announcement does not establish MattoBoard’s valuation, dilution, total funding raised, investor allocations, revenue or whether the entire amount was paid in cash at closing. It is a historical financing announcement, not a new August 2026 round.
Design Stream: from visual search to AI concepting
What was announced in 2025
The original Design Stream concept combined natural-language and image-based search. A designer could describe an aesthetic or upload a visual reference, then receive recommendations intended to fit the brief. MattoBoard said it wanted models specialized for design workflows rather than relying only on general-purpose foundation models. The key proposed chain was an image or brief, a material or product recommendation, a realistic virtual sample, a client-ready board and eventually a route to sourcing.

- Send selections into 3D material boards.
- Produce photorealistic renders and, according to MattoBoard, videos.

A July 9, 2026 update says users can generate a 3D material board directly from a prompt and that autosave was added to the board creator. MattoBoard’s team page claims a library of more than 50,000 branded materials and products; that is a marketing claim, not an independently audited inventory.
A representative designer workflow
- Start with a brief. Enter the project direction, upload reference images or add a floor plan.
- Generate a concept. Use the prompt to establish a room, mood, palette and furnishing direction.
- Review matches. Inspect products and finishes MattoBoard associates with the concept.
- Iterate. Swap colors, textures, finishes or products, and upload materials that are not in the library.
- Build the board. Move selected items into a 3D material board and add accessories or additional imagery.
- Present. Share the board or render with the client.
- Follow up. Use material sheets and linked products to continue specification work.
This is the workflow described in MattoBoard’s documentation, not an independent hands-on test. A match does not automatically mean that an item is in stock, correctly priced, available in the client’s region or approved for specification.
Why 3D boards can be more useful than flat collages
A flat mood board communicates color and general style. MattoBoard’s virtual samples are intended to add surface character, texture, reflections, light response and relationships among several finishes. That can make a client presentation more informative and make it faster to test alternatives when a client rejects a selection.

Digital samples are still representations. Screen calibration, lighting, rendering assumptions, texture-map quality, manufacturer photography and physical batch variation can change the result. They should support, not replace, physical samples and technical documentation.

Where the workflow can fail
Persuasive images can be technically wrong
Generated imagery may misstate dimensions, pattern scale, seams, edge conditions, thickness, installation details or performance characteristics. It is not a substitute for code review, fire or slip ratings, acoustic data, shop drawings or final procurement checks.
A matched product may not be purchasable
Listings can be discontinued, out of stock, region-restricted, trade-only, incomplete or merely near matches. Confirm the exact SKU, finish, size, lead time, price and supplier status independently.

Digital color is not physical color
Monitor settings, ambient light, camera exposure, rendering settings and manufacturing variation all affect appearance. Do not obtain final client approval solely from a screen image when color or finish is critical.
Coverage will vary
A large catalog may be strongest for decorative finishes, fabrics, wall coverings, flooring, paint and fixtures, while custom products, local suppliers, made-to-order furniture and technical building products may be less represented.

MattoBoard’s pages suggest a combination of subscription software, supplier connectivity and product discovery. The available information does not establish whether MattoBoard processes transactions, earns referral fees, synchronizes inventory or offers every product for direct purchase. “Marketplace” is therefore best understood as a discovery catalog unless the company confirms a transaction model.

MattoBoard is most credible as a bridge between inspiration, concept development, material selection and client approval. It is not yet established as a replacement for technical modeling, procurement systems or physical verification. Its long-term value will depend on product-data quality, supplier coverage, visual accuracy and whether attractive concepts consistently become defensible specifications.
