An intarsia teddy bear is a picture assembled from individually cut, shaped, and fitted pieces of solid wood—not a painted image or a stack of plywood layers. The right plan depends on whether you want a standalone wall panel or a teddy motif on a keepsake box, how many pieces you are comfortable cutting, and whether the plan includes dimensions and finishing guidance.
What an intarsia teddy plan includes
Intarsia uses contrasting wood pieces fitted together like a mosaic. The pieces are shaped and sanded to give the image depth, while differences in wood color and grain create the bear’s features. A plan typically supplies a pattern and may include instructions for cutting, fitting, shaping, and finishing; the scope varies by seller.
A teddy design can be a manageable first intarsia subject because its outline and features divide into recognizable parts. The number of pieces still matters: more pieces usually mean more individual cuts and fitting work, but piece count alone does not establish a plan’s difficulty.

Choose wood and blades for the look and cut
WoodworkersWorkshop names aspen, cherry, maple, red oak, walnut, and white oak as example woods for its project. - Prepare the pattern and stock. Check the plan’s printed scale, finished dimensions, wood species, and required thickness. Do not assume a pattern will print at the correct size without checking its scale.
- Transfer the pattern. Attach the full-size pattern to the wood using the method specified by the plan. In the free puzzle reference, the maker applies clear packaging tape, attaches a copied pattern with spray adhesive, and prepares 2 × 6 × 7 in scrap wood; those dimensions are specific to that puzzle workflow, not a general intarsia requirement.
- Cut the pieces. Use a scroll saw to follow the pattern lines, keeping pieces identified and oriented so you can reassemble the image. The free reference also mentions a coping saw, but a scroll saw is the tool named in the intarsia material listings.
- Sand and shape. Smooth the cut edges and shape individual parts to build depth while preserving a close fit. The exact contours and degree of shaping depend on the plan.
- Dry-fit the design. Arrange the pieces without glue and check the overall outline, joints, and orientation. Adjust the fit before committing to assembly.
- Glue and finish. Assemble according to the plan’s directions, then use its finishing guidance. WoodworkersWorkshop says its box plan includes finishing guidelines; the free puzzle reference instead specifies priming and painting, which is a different finish workflow and should not be taken as the required finish for a wood-grain intarsia design.

- Scale and size: Look for finished dimensions and verify that the pattern is full-size or can be printed at the intended scale.
