Turn a clean butternut squash into Halloween décor without a knife: paint it as a ghost, wrap it in hand-painted mummy bands, or mask stripes with painter’s tape. Start with a smooth, dry squash, follow the paint label for application and drying, and keep any carving to an adult.
Choose a no-carve design

For a straightforward family craft, painting avoids the sharp-tool step. The Oklahoma State University Extension advises that “All carving should be done by an adult.” It also notes that children can draw patterns with art supplies and help clean pulp and seeds from the center. Make a painted butternut squash ghost
Gather the materials
- One smooth-skinned butternut squash
- White and black acrylic paint
- A broad brush for the white coat and a smaller brush for the face
- A protected work surface
The Caran d’Ache pumpkin-decorating guide recommends selecting smoother skins and washing the squash before decorating. Acrylic paint and brushes are also among the materials used in its craft instructions.

Paint the ghost
- Protect your work surface. Wash the squash with water, then dry it thoroughly.
- With the broad brush, paint a white oval for a ghost shape, or coat the whole squash in white if you prefer. Let the base coat dry as directed on the paint label.
- Use the small brush to add black eyes and a mouth. Allow the finished decoration to dry according to the product directions before moving it.
There is no established food-safety claim for the decorated squash in these craft instructions. Treat it as décor, not as food, unless the exact products you use are labeled as suitable for food contact.
Try a mummy or masked pattern
Paint a mummy
Apply a white base coat, let it dry according to the label, then paint dark or contrasting lines across the squash to suggest wrapped bandages. Googly eyes are an optional embellishment in the example from Dulux’s Halloween craft ideas; check the adhesive and decoration labels before adding them.

Mask stripes with painter’s tape
- Clean the gourd and let it dry thoroughly.
- Apply painter’s tape to define stripes or other shapes.
- Apply paint according to its label, then remove the tape at the stage the manufacturer specifies.
Rust-Oleum’s painted pumpkin and gourd example removes tape while the paint is still slightly wet. That page gives one-hour handling and 24-hour full-cure timings for the product instructions shown there; those timings are product-specific, not general drying times for all paints.

An acrylic craft paint set is a practical search term for the core painting materials, with brushes and painter’s tape as optional additions for details and stripes. Check the instructions and suitability of the specific paint you buy; availability, price, and food-contact suitability vary by product.
