A few small spray-paint projects can make an outdoor space feel more coordinated: refresh a metal table or chairs, bring mismatched pots into one palette, or recolor faded cushions with paint made for outdoor fabric. The key is to choose a product labeled for the exact surface and outdoor use, then follow its preparation and drying instructions.
Choose paint for the surface, not just the color
Outdoor furniture and decor can include metal, plastic, ceramic, wood, and fabric. A paint made for one of those materials is not automatically suitable for another. Compare the product’s surface compatibility, exterior-use label, primer guidance, finish, and stated recoat and use times before starting. Rust-Oleum describes separate spray-paint categories for surfaces including metal and fabric: Rust-Oleum Spray Paint.

Krylon says its spray-paint products can be used on metal and plastic outdoor furniture, and identifies Fusion All-In-One, COLORmaxx, and Rust Tough as options. Check the current can label to confirm that the chosen product covers your exact material and outdoor use: Krylon Spray Paint FAQs.

Prepare the work area and surface
Set up for controlled spraying
Work outdoors or in another well-ventilated area, wear a painting mask, and protect nearby surfaces from overspray. Put the item apart from anything that should stay unpainted and use cardboard or a drop cloth to catch spray. Follow all precautions and application directions on the selected can. Krylon’s general guidance is at How to Spray Paint.
Clean, dry, and address the existing finish
Start with a clean, dry surface. Remove loose paint or rust with a wire brush, sandpaper, or steel wool. If the surface is glossy, Krylon recommends sanding it with fine-grain sandpaper and wiping away dust with a tack cloth. Preparation varies by material: lightly sand previously painted plastic, remove dust from wood, and allow for the possibility of extra coats on wood. For exterior metal, Krylon recommends primer for greatest durability. Its material-specific advice is in Proper Spray Paint Surface Preparation; the chosen product label takes precedence.

Refresh a metal patio table or chairs
A tired metal set is a good candidate for a coordinated finish. Rust-Oleum’s project sequence is to clean and dry the furniture, remove loose paint with a wire brush, prime, apply metallic spray paint, and optionally add a clear enamel top coat. Follow the instructions for the particular primer, paint, and clear coat you choose rather than treating this as a universal system. See Rust-Oleum’s Patio Furniture Refresh project.

Give flower pots a shared palette or simple pattern
Use one color across several pots for a cohesive look, or mask sections with painter’s tape to create simple geometric blocks. Rust-Oleum’s example sequence is to clean and dry the pots, mask the areas that should remain unpainted, apply primer in light coats, then add one or more colors. Its example advises waiting 24 hours before full use; confirm the timing on the products you use. The complete project is described in Rust-Oleum’s Painted Flower Pots guide.

Outdoor fabric paint is intended for cushions, pillows, and other outdoor fabrics. Choose a product whose label names the fabric or use you have, and follow its surface-specific application directions. Ordinary paint intended for hard surfaces is not an interchangeable substitute. Rust-Oleum includes fabric paint as an option in its Patio Furniture Refresh project and lists fabric among its spray-paint categories in its Spray Paint overview.

Refresh plastic outdoor furniture
Plastic furniture can be painted when the product is labeled for the specific plastic and exterior use. Krylon’s FAQ names Fusion All-In-One, COLORmaxx, and Rust Tough among its suggestions for metal and plastic outdoor furniture, but product compatibility and preparation can differ. Check the current label and prepare previously painted plastic as directed; Krylon’s general guidance recommends lightly sanding it. See its FAQ and surface-preparation guidance.

Use light coats where the project or product instructions call for them, and follow the specified recoat window rather than guessing when to spray again. Handling time and time before full use are separate milestones; an item that feels dry may still need more time before it is put back into service. There is no single drying schedule for all spray paints or surfaces, so use the chosen product’s label for the timing that applies to your project.
The manufacturer project guides provide application examples, not independent head-to-head durability tests. They do not establish that one brand or finish will last longer than another across different outdoor conditions.
