What to know before getting a buttock tattoo
A permanent tattoo is intended to last a lifetime and may be difficult to remove; removal can be incomplete and may leave scars, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and its tattoo guidance for consumers. Tattooing can involve infection, allergic reactions, granulomas, and keloids. The FDA says it has found microbial contamination in sealed ink bottles and issued final guidance on tattoo ink manufacturing and contamination prevention on October 24, 2024; a sealed bottle or label alone does not guarantee ink is safe. The agency’s tattoo and permanent makeup overview explains the risks and regulatory context. In the United States, tattooing practice is generally regulated by state and local jurisdictions, so check local rules and the studio’s practices. The FDA states: “The FDA has not approved any pigments for injection into the skin for cosmetic purposes.”
How do I care for a new butt tattoo?
Follow your tattoo artist’s wound-care instructions for the specific tattoo. General advice from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) includes using a water-based lotion or cream if tattooed skin feels dry and protecting healed tattooed skin from sun with broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher; avoid tanning beds. These are general tattooed-skin recommendations, not buttock-specific healing directions. Mayo Clinic says most tattoos take about two weeks to heal, but that is not a guarantee for every person or placement; follow your artist’s guidance.
Know when to seek medical advice
Some redness, swelling, soreness, clear fluid, itching, flaking, or scabbing can occur during ordinary healing. Contact a health professional promptly if redness or pain worsens, or if you develop fever, chills, pus, open sores, or a concerning rash. The AAD’s guide to tattoo skin reactions describes signs that can warrant care; the FDA also advises contacting a health professional if a tattoo does not seem to be healing or a rash develops, especially with fever. Photos alone cannot establish a diagnosis.
