Choose a patriotic patch by matching its backing to the surface, checking its size and flag orientation, and selecting a material that suits the intended use. A hook-and-loop patch needs a compatible loop panel; sew-on is the permanent garment option, while heat-seal patches are made for heat application. Details vary by listing, so confirm the exact product before buying.
How to choose a patriotic patch
Start with where the patch will go, then compare the listing’s backing, dimensions, orientation, construction and care directions. There is no independent comparative performance test establishing one patch as best for every use.
- Attachment surface: Hook backing attaches to a loop field. Choose sew-on for a permanent garment attachment or heat-seal when the product is designed for heat application.
- Fit: Measure the usable panel or garment area and compare it with the stated patch dimensions.
- Orientation: Check whether the flag is standard or reverse, particularly for shoulder placement.
- Construction: Embroidery has a stitched-fabric appearance; PVC is an alternative format.
- Care: Follow the directions for the specific patch rather than assuming instructions apply across materials.
Backing and attachment options
Hook-and-loop
A hook-backed patch attaches to a loop surface, such as the loop panel on a compatible bag or garment. Maxpedition’s large U.S. flag morale patch is PVC, measures 3 x 1.7 inches, and includes a loop field sheet that can be sewn onto clothing or used to protect the hook backing. Maxpedition’s product page describes that specific product; check the listing for the backing and accessories included with any other patch.
Sew-on and heat-seal
For a permanent garment attachment, choose a sew-on patch. Heat-seal is another option, but it is intended for heat application; follow the maker’s product directions. Hero’s Pride lists sew-on, hook-and-loop and heat-seal options for its embroidered American flag range. Its product range includes different versions, so verify the backing on the item you select.

Custom formats
If you need a nonstandard design or format, American Patch offers custom embroidered patches with hook-and-loop backing, as well as PVC options and woven iron-on options. Standard and reverse American flag patches
Hero’s Pride describes the standard orientation as having the star field on the left and the reverse orientation as having it on the right. The seller says the reverse version is suited to right-shoulder placement: when a wearer moves forward, the flag appears to stream behind them. This is the vendor’s explanation, not a substitute for the rules governing a particular uniform. Uniform wearers should check their applicable requirements before choosing a patch.

Size and material affect fit and appearance
Compare actual listed dimensions rather than relying on terms such as “large.” For example, Maxpedition’s PVC flag patch measures 3 x 1.7 inches, while Hero’s Pride lists an embroidered flag patch at approximately 3-3/8 x 2 inches. Those sizes are not interchangeable if the available panel is tight.

Hero’s Pride says each embroidered flag in its range has about 6,500 stitches; that is a product-specific seller figure, not a standard for embroidered patches generally. PVC provides a different look and construction. Bartact describes its PVC patches as waterproof and weather-resistant, but those are the vendor’s claims; the cited product information does not provide an independent durability comparison. Bartact’s flag patch range includes embroidered and PVC options and describes its patches as having hook backing for loop surfaces.

Care depends on the specific patch
Use the care label or product directions for the patch you own. For its specific patriotic hook-and-loop patch, Combat Iron Apparel Co. says, “Spot clean with mild soap and warm water.” Its directions also say to wipe with a soft cloth, air dry completely before reattaching, and avoid bleach or harsh chemical cleaners. - Measure the usable area and compare it with the product’s stated dimensions.
- Confirm standard or reverse orientation, especially for shoulder placement.
- Check whether the patch is embroidered, PVC or another construction, and read any material-specific claims as the seller’s claims.
- Locate the care directions for that exact product.
