The AllPeopleQuilt Rectangles and Squares Quilt finishes at 38-1/2 × 48-1/2 inches. Its center is made from 100 patchwork units—each joining a 2-1/2 × 4-1/2-inch assorted-print rectangle to a 2-1/2-inch solid gray square—arranged in 20 staggered rows. The pattern calls for 120 units to be made, leaving 20 that can be used in a backing band.
How the AllPeopleQuilt version is built
The layout alternates which shape starts each horizontal row: one row begins with a gray square, the next with a print rectangle. Varying where colors change from row to row creates the quilt’s flowing, rainbow-like effect. A black-print border frames the center.
The 100 units in the quilt center form a 30-1/2 × 40-1/2-inch panel before borders. After adding the black-print border, the finished quilt measures 38-1/2 × 48-1/2 inches. The pattern identifies Kathie Holland as designer and Laura Boehnke as quilt tester.

Fabric and cutting requirements
AllPeopleQuilt’s quantities assume 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabric. The assorted prints are described in brown, aqua, gold, taupe, gray, and black.

The stated quantities and cut list come from AllPeopleQuilt’s project instructions. Each rectangle-and-square pair makes a unit measuring 6-1/2 × 2-1/2 inches, including seam allowances.
Assembly and finishing
- Make the units. Sew one print rectangle to one gray square to make each 6-1/2 × 2-1/2-inch unit. Make 120 units.
- Arrange the center. Use 100 units to form 20 horizontal rows, alternating a gray-square start and a print-rectangle start. Shift color-transition points between neighboring rows to create the intended flowing color effect.
- Join the rows and add the border. Sew units into rows, join the rows, then add the black-print border strips.
- Quilt and bind. Layer the quilt top with batting and backing, baste, quilt as desired, and bind with the black print.
The tester’s notes say the remaining 20 units were saved for a band on the backing. For cutting, squares and rectangles are commonly subcut from fabric strips; OLFA describes squaring fabric and guiding cuts with a ruler and cutting mat. These are optional tool suggestions, not a requirement to use a specific brand or model. See OLFA’s cutting guidance.

Distinguishing the similarly named pattern
Quilts by Jen also offers a downloadable pattern called Rectangles and Squares, but it is a separate design. It advertises four layout options and a finished lap size of 47-1/2 × 57-1/2 inches; those details do not apply to the AllPeopleQuilt quilt.
