Brendan Murphy’s seven-metre BOONJI Spaceman is currently in Stirling Gardens, near Council House in Perth. The City of Perth says it plans to move the sculpture to Elizabeth Quay in mid-2027; that is an announced target, not a completed move or a confirmed date. The City accepted the work as a gift from Murphy, facilitated by Gullotti Galleries.
Where is the BOONJI Spaceman now?
As of the City of Perth’s 25 August 2026 update, the sculpture remains in Stirling Gardens. It was unveiled there on 22 May 2025. The City says it will stay in the gardens until the planned relocation to Elizabeth Quay in mid-2027.

The original 2025 announcement described a 12-month stay. The later City update supersedes that expectation: the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage and the Heritage Council of Western Australia approved an extension of the temporary installation. The City’s announcement does not give an exact moving date or describe final visitor arrangements at Elizabeth Quay.
What is the planned move to Elizabeth Quay?
The City’s stated plan is to relocate the sculpture to Elizabeth Quay in mid-2027, when the City takes ownership of the Elizabeth Quay and Barrack Square precincts from DevelopmentWA. Until that move happens, Elizabeth Quay is a future location, not where the sculpture can currently be viewed.

Who made the sculpture, and how did it come to Perth?
Contemporary artist Brendan Murphy made the seven-metre work for Perth and donated it to the City, which accepted it as a gift facilitated by Gullotti Galleries. PerthNow reported on 8 May 2025 that the City had budgeted $250,000 for transportation and installation; that figure was reported by PerthNow, rather than stated in the City’s later location update.
The sculpture belongs to Murphy’s BOONJI Spaceman series. PerthNow reported that Perth was joining six other cities with a personalised BOONJI Spaceman. Murphy described the Perth installation as uniquely made for its setting, intended to inspire wonder and imagination. Gullotti Galleries founder and director Paul Gullotti put the public nature of the gift simply: “Once it is unveiled it belongs to the people.”

Why is the sculpture connected to Perth’s “City of Light” story?
The City links the work to Perth’s nickname, “City of Light,” through the story of American astronaut John Glenn’s 1962 orbital flight. In the City’s account, residents and businesses left their lights on, shone torches skyward and lit lanterns to make Perth visible from space. Deputy Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds made that connection at the sculpture’s unveiling.
What was Brendan Murphy’s 2025 exhibition in Perth?
The sculpture’s unveiling coincided with Life Is Electric, Murphy’s Australian solo exhibition at Gullotti Galleries in Cottesloe. PerthNow reported that the show included more than 45 paintings and sculptures and was announced to run publicly for eight weeks from 23 May 2025. It is a past exhibition, not a current event.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What name should visitors use?
The City’s announcements refer to the public work as the BOONJI Spaceman. PerthNow’s 8 May 2025 report gives an individual title as “Lightening,” while Murphy’s biography spells the Perth work “Lightning.” The City’s later announcements do not resolve that difference, so BOONJI Spaceman is the clearest public-facing name.
