To paint a realistic-looking eye in ibisPaint, build it in editable passes: sketch the eye’s forms, keep line art and color on separate layers, block in the base colors, then add clipped shadows, gradients, texture, and highlights. Use a reference to guide the shapes and color relationships; no preset brush or universal palette makes an eye realistic on its own.
1. Start with a reference and a simple eye sketch
Choose a clear reference image and sketch the major forms before rendering: the upper and lower lids, iris, pupil, and visible white of the eye. Treat the sketch as a map for shapes and value changes rather than trying to draw every detail immediately. ibisPaint’s tutorial library includes guidance on sketching and displaying reference images.

Compare the proportions and angles in your sketch with the reference. The iris sits partly behind the lids in many views, so draw the lid contours across it rather than outlining a complete circle that appears pasted on top. Keep the sketch light enough to revise as the forms take shape.
2. Separate the sketch, line art, and color
Put the sketch or line drawing, the color, and the background on separate layers. This makes it easier to change a contour or repaint a color without disturbing the other elements. ibisPaint’s layers tutorial explains this separation and demonstrates lowering a sketch layer’s opacity when it gets in the way of tracing.
- Keep the sketch on its own layer and reduce its opacity if the lines compete with your clean contours.
- Make a separate line-art layer for the lid edges and other contours you want to preserve.
- Add one or more color layers below the line art, with the background kept separate as well.
Use the line art to clarify the eyelids and the iris boundary, not to give every feature an equally heavy outline. A controlled difference in line weight can help the upper lid read more strongly than softer interior details.

3. Block in the base colors
Before adding small marks, fill the main shapes with base colors: skin around the eye, the visible eye white, the iris, and the pupil. Choose hues by comparing them with your reference. The eye white is part of the same scene as the surrounding skin and often needs value or color variation to sit naturally; avoid assuming it must be pure white.

4. Shade on a clipped layer
Create a new layer above the base colors and enable clipping so brush marks stay within the underlying color. Use that layer to build shadows, gradients, and texture without repainting the silhouettes. ibisPaint describes clipping as useful for these kinds of edits in its clipping guide.

Give the eye depth with value changes
Look at the reference and place darker values where forms overlap or turn away from the light. The upper lid can cast a shadow over the eye, while the iris and the area around the pupil need enough value contrast to remain legible. Keep transitions soft where the forms turn gradually, and use clearer edges where one form covers another.
Blend color rather than relying on outlines
Use gradients or layered strokes to move between neighboring colors in the iris, skin, and eye white. ibisPaint’s official tutorial index has separate guidance for gradients and for creating highlights and shadows. Match the direction and softness of those changes to your reference; a single gradient applied everywhere will flatten rather than describe the forms.
Add texture selectively
Once the large shadow shapes read clearly, add restrained texture where the reference supports it. Keep the texture subordinate to the main value structure so it does not obscure the iris, pupil, or lid edges.

5. Add highlights and refine the focal details
Make highlights a separate pass so you can adjust or remove them independently from the shadows. Add the strongest highlight where the reference shows reflected light, then check whether the pupil, iris, and lid contours remain clear around it. ibisPaint’s tutorial index includes a dedicated guide to creating highlights and shadows.
Review the eye at a smaller zoom as well as close up. If the silhouette and broad light-dark pattern are clear when reduced, fine details are less likely to be doing the work that should belong to the larger forms.
6. Tune the stabilizer to the stroke
Stabilizer correction can neaten freehand lines. ibisPaint’s stabilizer tutorial recommends Real Time correction for most cases and notes that After correction can help with slow drawing, such as tracing. Choose the mode according to how you work rather than treating one setting as mandatory.

The current feature documentation describes an updated Real Time stabilizer with “Constant” and “Fast Strokes” controls: increasing their values strengthens correction, and a legacy stabilization option is available. Interface details can vary with the app version. Start with modest correction, then adjust if your lines still wobble or feel delayed.
7. Optional brush starting point
Brush choice is a matter of control and preference, not a realism shortcut. In an ibisPaint community eye-coloring tutorial published February 11, 2024, creator Re Move used Dip Pen (Hard) for line art and Felt Tip Pen (Hard), Airbrush (Triangle), and Dip Pen (Hard) while rendering. The creator also reported stabilizer 5 (after) and force fade off. Treat that as one creator’s recipe to experiment with, not as an official requirement or a universal recommendation: settings that suit one drawing, hand, or device may not suit another.
Brush dynamics can make thickness, opacity, and blur respond to stroke speed and pressure from a finger or stylus pen, according to ibisPaint’s brush-parameter guide. A pressure-sensitive stylus is optional; check that a particular stylus works with your device before relying on pressure control.
