For a current sewing project, choose a long johns pattern by wearer and size range, garment details, fabric requirements, and how you plan to print it. Options range from a free long-underwear download to adult patterns with a front placket and back-flap details; they are not interchangeable, so check each publisher’s listing before cutting.
Compare long johns patterns by fit and design
“Long johns pattern” can refer to a modern sewing pattern, a vintage paper pattern, or a knitting or crochet design. The options below are sewing patterns, but they differ in intended wearer, sizing, garment style, fabric guidance, and file format. Use the maker’s size chart and finished garment measurements where available rather than choosing by size label alone.

A historical paper pattern or crochet design is a different kind of project from a current adult sewing pattern. For example, a crochet listing should not be treated as a cut-and-sew garment pattern. Check whether a listing is currently available before planning around it.

Match the fabric to the pattern
Follow the chosen pattern’s own fabric instructions; a recommendation for one design does not automatically suit another. Peek-a-Boo specifies light-to-medium-weight knit with at least 30% stretch, while Jalie describes its long-johns view as designed for stretch fleece. An Etsy bundle listing suggests stretch fabrics such as cotton with elastane, thermal knit, wool jersey, rib knit, or merino blends; those are that seller’s suggestions, not a universal specification.
Before cutting, compare the fabric’s stretch and weight with the pattern guidance. If a listing gives a stretch percentage or a particular knit type, use that information rather than assuming any fabric marketed as thermal underwear fabric will work.

Choose a printing workflow you can use
- Home printer: A4 or US Letter tiled pages print on ordinary sheets that must be assembled. The Lebenskleidung download lists A4 home printing; Peek-a-Boo lists both A4 and US Letter.
- Copy shop: A0 files are intended for large-format printing. Both Peek-a-Boo and Lebenskleidung list an A0 option.
- Projector: Peek-a-Boo lists a projector format, which avoids assembling printed tiles if your setup supports it.
Check the publisher’s file and printing notes before buying or downloading, especially if you need a specific paper size or projector file. File availability can change.

Gather supplies for the free download
For the Lebenskleidung pattern, the publisher lists thread, a tape measure, paper scissors, fabric scissors, and pins, along with a domestic sewing machine. It marks an overlocker and jersey needle as optional. These are the supplies listed for that pattern, not a universal requirement for every design; follow the instructions for whichever pattern you choose.

Check instructions and availability before starting
Peek-a-Boo advertises a tutorial, Lebenskleidung includes sewing instructions, and the Jalie retailer listing describes a tutorial. Those descriptions establish that guidance is offered, but they do not establish that one pattern is easier for beginners or that its instructions are better than another’s. Review the listing details and any available preview to judge whether the construction suits your experience.
Pattern stock, price, and download availability may change. Confirm the current listing with the publisher before planning a project, particularly for vintage or historical options that may be marked sold out or discontinued.
